Bias Tracker: allkpop, Soompi, Billboard, and K-pop Masters

IATFB 11/26/2011 21

By any reasonable measure, Billboard‘s K-pop Masters concert is a significant event for the Hallyu Wave. As it’s being held on American soil, one would expect the two media giants of the Hallyu Wave in America would be competing neck and neck to see who could have the best up to the second coverage of this event, right?

Wrong.

While both allkpop and Soompi have gone balls out for concerts that were of far less importance, neither of them seem particularly interested in covering this event.

—–

allkpop hasn’t informed their audience of its existence except for an airport fashion article on TVXQ and a HyunA selca article, which aren’t actually about the event, but it does spell out K-pop Masters by name. Both of which are sadly better than the Jiyoon selca article which mentions she’s in Las Vegas, but fails to even mention the event by name.

Soompi, for its part, has dedicated three posts to the concert, but hasn’t written anything about it in around a month. Miraculously though, they managed to fit in coverage of a festival in Sydney. Amazing.

On Twitter, a bunch of people inquired as to why two sites that claim to be leaders of the international Hallyu Wave wouldn’t pay this event any attention.

Well, there are reasons, but none of them will make fans happy.

1) allkpop generally won’t run stories on concerts or events they aren’t given access to. As you probably noticed, they’ll cover comparatively irrelevant events if they are connected with the artist or the promotion. However, if they’re not compensated (financially or exclusivity), then it doesn’t exist as far as they’re concerned.

2) Soompi may seem to get a pass because they posted three articles about it, but they only did so until they didn’t get what they wanted. In that sense, they aren’t any different in how they treat concerts or events than allkpop. Their lack of promotion of the concert is especially confusing considering their management has contacts within Billboard.

3) Billboard reached out to both sites say my sources within the company, so the problem wasn’t truly with them. I suppose they could have pushed harder, but they got many blogs to participate in promoting K-pop Masters, so it’s just the two main companies that refrained.

=====

The two sites taking care of their own interests over what’s best for Hallyu isn’t anything new or surprising. However, it’s disappointing given how both parade themselves around like they are Hallyu leaders but don’t care about Hallyu unless it’s beneficial to their sites or their pocketbooks.

If nothing else, it’s a lesson for fans not to rely on one or two sites for all of your K-pop news, because no matter what those sites may claim, they don’t cover the entirety of scene unless it benefits them.

There’s a huge banner for the Kpop Masters on Koreaboo. Only news site I’ve really seen the Kpop Masters on.

    • IATFB 11/26/2011 at 10:45 AM -

Koreaboo doesn’t have anywhere near the same marketing power, based on traffic numbers.

I’m guessing Koreaboo was just happy to have any association, whereas the other two prioritized their own shit ahead of K-pop.

Tons of people are pissed at allkpop (Soompi too but less so) over their lack of coverage.

I guess Soompi got a pass once again cause they mentioned them until they realized it wasn’t beneficial.

People will figure out Soompi sooner than later if they don’t change. Took years for allkpop to develop their reputation and it took being the most popular as well.

Hi there neighbors! Just wanted to clear some misunderstandings here. We had a 3 day forum ad takeover for K-Pop Masters (the entire skin was a huge ad for them). As for our lack of presence, we contacted them for weeks asking about press passes without response, as can be corroborated by other outlets that had trouble communicating with them. Undoubtedly they were incredibly busy trying to get everything together. Regardless, there was no lack of effort in trying to cover it in person.

As for New F.O., if they have a successful debut and start getting covered by the Korean media outlets, we will cover them as well. As of now, they are just another one of the X number of rookie groups that dream of “making it” that we don’t cover.

    ^^v

It’s not about presence at the actual concert though, it’s about the promotion and coverage of it.

By all accounts, K-pop Masters was not as organized as they should have been, but hardly any K-pop events in America are because they are rarely handled by experienced professionals. That’s the way it is.

Now if you admit you were in contact with the promoters at some point then obviously you were aware of the concert’s existence but choose not to provide any meaningful coverage despite the fact that others did. The excuse that you need to be there in person to provide coverage for an event is a fallacy, as many events that are mentioned on Soompi do not have your people there in person to observe it. In fact, that’s how the majority of concert/event posts go.

The main point is about the event being completely ignored after their financial investment with Soompi ended while you have covered events with significantly less star power both days before and days after K-pop Masters. Not sure how that is supposed to be a counter to my point about you only caring about the Hallyu Wave as far as the money takes you, but alright.

As far as New.F.O goes, they were a relevant story at the time of the announcement of their group, as most rookie groups are. You have covered rookie groups with far less significance than them in the past with far less actual ties back to the international community, so I’m not sure how that’s a valid excuse either. You can explain it away all you want, but it’s not exactly difficult to search the site and find irrelevant or rookie groups being covered.

You really want to go down this road with me?

    http://files.upit.me/1322653690.png

    Just saying.

It’s cute how your writers think they are heads and heels above 6Theory Media, but it’s a facade.

    • IATFB 11/29/2011 at 5:11 PM -

      Oh.

      http://files.upit.me/1322659793.png

If any of you would like to engage me as to why you are so much better than 6Theory Media from a news media and journalism ethics standpoint, I’m game.

      :-)

Hi, I’d just like to say that one writer’s opinion does not necessarily reflect all the writers’ opinions at Soompi.
I personally don’t think we’re high above Allkpop at all. From a journalist’s standpoint, I respect the site for garnering so many readers and support. Even though I do write for Soompi, I do give them props for helping international fans who do not understand Korean get news about their favorite idols as quickly as possible. I take pride in my work and have worked hard to contribute to Soompi getting to where they are today. I’m sure Allkpop has worked just as hard. And for that, I give them props. I wouldn’t say we’re high above Allkpop, however I wouldn’t say we’re below them either. I think we’re working hard to be the best we can be, regardless of us being “the best”or at the top.

In response to your comment “If any of you would like to engage me as to why you are so much better than 6Theory Media from a news media and journalism ethics standpoint, I’m game.” I would like to also say that I never said Soompi was so much better than 6Theory Media. You are using one comment to try to imply that I am saying that.

Also, if one of your “friends” happens to screen-cap one of our private conversations, I would prefer if you censored our names. Although Facebook is a public site, I feel like this is an invasion of privacy. I understand that you would like to prove your point. However, by posting these images of your conversations you are invading our private lives and I would like to keep my professional life separated from my personal life. Thank you.

      • IATFB 11/29/2011 at 7:31 PM -

I blacked out the names. Apologize for that, I figured they were all aliases.

        —–

While you might not endorse what they say, when speaking in generalities, what I say about the shit talking is true.

        —–

The point isn’t to say one site it better than the other. In fact, the point is to say they are the same but there’s a disparity between perception and reality. I’m free to point that out and instead of painting me as the bad guy, I think the prudent solution is to address the actual problems.

        Thanks.

    • NanaFTW 12/01/2011 at 12:00 AM -

All talk shit in private but none will debate in an open forum. No real retort if it came to that.

  5. soomp 11/29/2011 at 5:23 PM -

I didn’t expect to change your mind, just wanted to clarify a couple points. In no way do I think we are doing everything right, and we make a lot of mistakes, but we are trying to do our best. Are you one of our writers? :P Anyhow, we’ll try harder to get things right. You can understand that with so many different moving parts, it’s hard for everyone to be on the same page, but I digress. I don’t know what you mean by the financial investment re: KPop Masters, as we’ve only given them positive press and support for free *shrugs*

    • IATFB 11/29/2011 at 5:27 PM -

If what you say is true about needing to change and improve than that’s already more than what 6Theory Media can admit, but who really knows, right?

No, I’m not one of your writers, we just have friends.

This is an amusing post to read for somebody like me who remembers Asian Junkie from like 6-7 years ago.

Since you obviously don’t know the history, this site was in the same mode it is now from way back in the day when allkpop was still a troll type of site.

      Learn something new everyday, right?

      :-P

Glad to see how you are making wonderful points about how Soompi’s writers are significantly better than 6Theory Media’s.

      So much class.

      Well done.

Dealing with pre-teen Ko-Am “writers” and the creeps on their message boards is exhausting.
