With their stock price tanking due to the scandals surrounding Big Bang and 2NE1, YG Entertainment revealed that they are currently working on debuting three groups.
YG Entertainment also revealed to investors that there are currently 3 groups in the making out of the 32 trainees they currently house, confirming plans to continue the next generation of Big Bang and 2NE1.
It was revealed that a female group, made up of trainees all under the age of 20, will be making their debut in the early half of next year. In the latter half, they will be followed up by a new boy group.
The timing of the announcement was undoubtedly designed to stop their stock price from bleeding and perhaps to renew confidence in stock holders that even if Big Bang and 2NE1 should suffer in long term popularity because of the scandals, there will be alternate options in the future to keep YG Entertainment afloat.
My big question though? In what direction will YG Entertainment go with the new groups? Everybody is currently assuming that they’ll be like Big Bang and 2NE1, but is that really the best move?
Don’t get me wrong, those two groups have obviously struck gold for YG and the company could go with the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” mantra, but would having five groups competing for attention with each other in the same “look at how edgy we are and look at how real we are” mold be the best option?
Unless Big Bang and 2NE1 are going to be soon defunct, I’m not sure I see the benefit in YG basically competing with themselves, so you might see a different direction for at least one, if not two, of the upcoming groups that they’ve mentioned.
