Critical Eye: Soompi’s Netizen Overreaction Editorial Generally On Point

Thus far, I’ve been critical of editorials written by mainstream Asian pop media sites, but I have to give credit when it’s due as well, and Soompi‘s “Overreact Much? Netizens Too Critical of Stars’ ‘Thoughtless’ Remarks?” editorial was a comprehensive review of netizen overreactions to celebrity statements.

Celebrities whose statements are addressed in the article are Yoon Eun Hye, f(x)‘s Sulli, Han Chae Young, Shin Min Ah, 2PM‘s Nichkhun, After School‘s Kahi, Jang Dong Gun, Hyun Bin, Lee Yeon Hee, Kim Sarang, and Lee Min Jung.

I learned a solid amount from the article (a rarity), if for nothing else than the fact that it recapped statements that had previously slipped my mind. It was solidly written and cohesively formed, which made it an overall good read.

If there’s one criticism that I think applies to almost all editorials from mainstream Asian pop media outlets, it’s the unwillingness to risk offending certain segments of their audience.

I, for one, feel netizens overreacted.

Stuff like that just feels a bit muted, as if it’s pandering to the audience by holding back just in case the opinion might offend somebody…which sort of negates the entire point of writing an editorial to begin with.

I realize they cannot and should not be like me and just scream, “HOLY TITTIES THESE FUCKERS ARE DUMB AS HELL”, but I mean there are intelligent ways to assert that you are strongly against something.

Regardless, playing it safe aside, this was the best editorial by a mainstream Asian pop media outlet since I started this site.

“Lee Yeon Hee – “I never thought I was pretty…just a little prettier than average-looking?”

Kim Sarang – “My long legs make it uncomfortable in buses and theaters…Doesn’t everyone have that problem?”

Lee Min Jung – “I’m not pretty.”

Those quotes are laughably ridiculous. Especially Lee Min Jung’s.

I thought the article was alright, but the demonizing of netizens and scapegoating them into a single hive-mind seems to be a running joke in the k-pop community.

Celebrities being stupid doesn’t justify netizens being stupid.
