When it comes to video posts, I generally prefer visiting allkpop over Soompi for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is because allkpop is usually first to the punch, but also because their comments section is far superior and far more filled with insane morons.
Recently though, that preference changed, as allkpop added this new skin to the traditional YouTube player, one which seems hell bent on making it a pain to adjust quality, harder to skip between parts, and slower to load.
While I understand that there are probably financial incentives behind this, and maybe even a little of brand marketing (allkpop’s unique video player or whatever), as Fobio advised previously, never exchange minor benefits (financial or otherwise) for user experience because the user will always choose the path of least resistance.
Given that the player doesn’t even fucking work for me at points, especially when there are a ton of videos on one page like for music show recaps, I now do everything in my power to avoid video posts on allkpop. If I’m going through my Google Reader feed and Soompi or Omona They Didn’t has the same video post as allkpop, I’ll choose either of them every time.
Why? It’s just easier and I think that’s what users tend to do as well.
The short term benefits might be there for allkpop, and who knows, maybe this is just temporary, but as a long term plan, I think they’re only encouraging more people to look elsewhere whenever possible, and you never want to give people an excuse to leave your site.

allkpop is a fucking sellout company. I went on there without AdBlock once and almost cried myself to sleep.
Nothing wrong with making money, it just makes their site a worse experience is all.
Of course there’s nothing wrong with making money, but the extent to which they’re product-placing and advertising is insane. It’s everywhere.
Yeah, I only have a problem with it when it starts degrading user experience.

I can’t even load it on my laptop anymore…seriously. I just get a white screen. Before they “revamped” their site it was tolerable, but now…

It’s also annoying if you’re reading it in Mobile format, because you have to change to the desktop version to watch the vids for some strange reason…

Yeah, I avoid any articles that have videos on allkpop these days. It’s like they take one step forward (changing their layout) and take one step back (new video player.)
Regarding embedded videos – doesn’t it also seem like they link to the crappiest quality videos for stuff like live performances? Usually if I go directly to YouTube and search for the same event, I always find a much higher quality HD version of the same clip.
Video player doesn’t even work. Although maybe it’s because I have adblock on. I view the source code to find the Youtube link embed.
I do that too, but it’s a fucking pain. I give up.

The only new good thing was that the page layout changed. It takes FOREVER for a page to load and apparently tabs don’t work anymore as it opens up the page I want in another window and leaves a blank tab behind which lags.
Sometimes the video players just don’t load up at all and I see an exclamation mark where the video is supposed to be.
If I could go elsewhere for “latest” k-pop news I would. AKFangirl, this site and SB aren’t enough but I read those before going to AKP.

It took me forever to figure out that by pressing the “Youtube” logo in the corner of the vid, I could just skip past the bullshit and watch it on Youtube itself and in better quality. AKP already lags enough as it is, the new vid set-up doesn’t do it any good…
Yeah the video experience there still sucks. But at least they did change the site now. Im just sick of those Bermuda commercials.
