In Defense Of: allkpop & Soompi’s Coverage Of T-ara’s Hwayoung’s Nipslip

As things usually are in the K-pop fandom, the reactions to the news of T-ara‘s Hwayoung‘s nipslip were rational and reasoned.

While most of my criticism has been directed at the mainstream media so far, there are times when the users need to be put in their place as well, generally because the same tendencies that cause me to make fun of netizens eventually show themselves when the mainstream media does anything that fans don’t agree with.

Needless to say, the nipslip incident was one of those times where fans just lost their shit.

Not only should the media have covered T-ara’s Hwayoung’s nipslip, they had to cover it.

As a journalist, your job is to report the facts that you find within the area of your coverage, and since their area of coverage is Korean entertainment, actively squashing knowledge of news would be bias in itself. Doing anything but running stories on the news item and following up on it, when it’s obviously a gigantic issue to Korean and International netizens alike, would border on negligence.

People have the right to know what’s going on, and they demand to know what’s going on, so regardless of whether a certain fandom or company or interest group might dislike what you’re about to publish, it’s the media’s job to tell the truth of the matter.

Anybody who has a problem with either site covering the event itself is ignorant of what the media’s role is in society and has no concept of what journalism is about.

They’re not only justified in reporting on it, but it’s their duty to do so.

I had no problem with them reporting on it. I mean its actual news instead of reporting on something silly like selca’s.

Silly users. I thought they were against censorship, then they go off thinking they have the right to say what should and shouldn’t be published.

I wonder what would happen if Allkpop and Soompi deleted the articles. Maybe the fans could pretend the nipslip never happened? They’re also trying to block all the videos of that performance on YouTube also.

      Nothing.

      Everybody would know.

It was all over tumblr, Twitter, and forums before they even put the article up.

People will find a way to get significant stories, trying to censor shit is pointless.
