For the umpteenth time, netizens have taken the task of figuring out whether a celebrity has undergone plastic surgery and it’s generating a ton of media attention this time around because the target of the investigation is IU.
If I didn’t know any better, I’d say they waste all this time talking about plastic surgery to make themselves feel better about their own miserable existence.
Nah, couldn’t be.
On January 4, a screenshot of IU’s old interview with an unknown magazine was posted online under the title, “The honest IU, coolly admitted it (plastic surgery).” The captured photo clearly shows a line where it says, “(IU) briefly revealed that she got plastic surgery.”
The anonymous writer added, “IU goes to the same hospital as Kang Yumi. This place is famous for two-jaw surgeries. Why would IU go here instead of a regular dermatologist?” (The writer is basically accusing IU of lying about her intention behind visiting to the two-jaw surgeon, and that it was not for skin-care but for other purposes).
IU has repeatedly denied rumors of receiving cosmetic surgery throughout her career. Her explanation for her changed look has always been about the heavy makeup and weight loss. After the photo was posted, many netizens have expressed their “disappointed” over IU’s previous comments.
IU’s agency, however, denied the report, saying, “The interview was about her makeup being as effective as receiving plastic surgery, but it was taken out of context. IU did not get any cosmetic surgeries.”
As expected, IU’s agency replied, basically calling shenanigans on the whole issue and then threatening to drop the legal banhammer on people.
IU’s agency denied this stating, “The interview was about her makeup being as effective as receiving plastic surgery, but it was taken out of context. IU did not get any cosmetic surgery.”
On January 4 at night Jo Young Cheol wrote on his twitter, “Lee Ji Eun (IU’s Real Name) has never been under the knife. You can tell if you look at her baby pictures. Why do you keep doing this? If you continue spreading this rumor we will sue you. I am not joking.”
He also stated, “IU is just laughing it off and telling me to let it go. I don’t know if she is some Buddha or spirit. Anyways, if these rumors continue, we will consider extreme measures.”
While the question being argued is “Did IU have plastic surgery or not?“, the question I want answered is “Why do we care whether IU had plastic surgery or not?“.

I’m not going to get into whether she did or didn’t, because I don’t honestly give a shit. Sure, it’s nice to find out a celebrity is completely natural or generally natural, but how this issue gets to the point of these extreme tangents is ridiculous.
Celebrities, especially female ones, have impossible standards of beauty to live up to, which is why you see even gorgeous stars feeling like they have to tweak every last superficial thing until they are perfect. This happens around the world, and it’s especially true in Korea, ironically because of obsessed douchenozzles like these netizens who spend hours pouring over every picture looking for any flaw in a celebrity that allows them to not feel like an ugly outcast slaving away at studying for 16 hours a day.
Plastic surgery’s role in popular culture grows greater because of the obsession with it, so either work to change that sentiment or build a fucking bridge and get over it.

They can never please the netizens/critics though.
If they are thick, they get called obese and have to lose weight. If they are thin, they get called sickening and have to gain weight.
Even that though, I think it’s mainly females.
If any female idol got fat to the extent Shindong is/was, they wouldn’t just be made fun of, they would probably be shunned or driven to suicide.
The body weight criticisms never seem to apply to male idols even though I clearly see them gain and lose weight as well.
Do the sane actually ‘idolize’ Shindong?
I don’t believe it.
You’ve never seen fangirls defending him? Pretty common. :o
Girls look at someone who is ridiculously beautiful like IU and it makes them feel worse about their own appearance.
If they find out a girl like that has had plastic surgery, they feel slightly better about themselves because then they can just write it off as “un-natural” or “fake” beauty.
I think that is basically the reason why some people (women) care about finding out if someone has had plastic surgery or not (or has been photo-shopped, or what they look like without makeup, etc). It’s really about feeding the self-esteem of these less-attractive women.
There is obviously a lot of plastic surgery in Korea. However, I think the accusation of it gets thrown around too loosely. I think a lot of it is just makeup. YouTube is full of Asian girls doing makeup tutorials. It is sometimes scary what an Asian girl can do with makeup. A “5″ can easily become a “9″.
Yeah, basically.
It’s like some inherent desire to prove to themselves that they’re not hideous monster because a celebrity had a minor procedure done or something, as if that would change their current reality.
Korean women get heckled the most. Its insane. Ive seen documentaries on beauty standards in korea and its just sad. Pretty girls thinking they are ugly because of society.
That is the same for women around the world, but yeah, I do think it’s much crazier in Korea.

This ^^^^^^
My mother is Japanese and my father is African American. So I understand the whole, “I want bigger eyes or better nose…” ordeal. My mother always use to tell me when I was young that I needed to get my nose fixed because it was flat, lol. Glad I never listened because I think my nose is quite cute.. See before and after photos of Asian women after cosmetic surgery:
