Ask Asian Junkie: What do you think of Infinite? + Is IU’s aegyo image disappointing?

Infinite’s one of my favorite groups. What do you think of them?

DBB: One of my favorite male idol groups in K-pop. I like the underdog type of success story they have going, but I still don’t know how to tell any of them apart except for L and the girly looking one.

IATFB: Personally, I don’t have anything against Infinite. I don’t dislike any of their members, I don’t dislike their fans, and they’re a solid group from what I’ve seen. All of that is actually a compliment coming from me.

That said, it remains to be seen whether they can make that leap though. I think what DBB said about the members not standing out is their main hurdle.

I also love IU, though I’m a little sad she had to go the cutesy, aegyo route to gain popularity. What do you think of her?

Love IU.

As a soloist, she’s actually sorta different in the K-pop industry on that alone. She has charisma, she’s talented, and she’s attractive, which is basically all you can ask from an idol.

Despite your concerns about aegyo, I’d say that given her age, she has jumped into the serious subject matter end of the pool awful quickly, probably because it’s what the trend is in the mainstream. At her age though, there probably wouldn’t be anything wrong with doing more poppy, upbeat songs and gradually growing into the serious stuff as she matures.

Furthermore, there are moments when she’s on variety shows where you can see that she actually has an arrogance and a confidence about her, which I dig. I know IU fans think that would reflect badly on her innocent princess public image, but I don’t see her self-awareness and maturity as a bad thing. I think it makes her personality different from the standard vapid cute aegyo idol.
