While MR (music recording) removed videos are scattered all over YouTube, the MR itself is never found anywhere, and probably for good reason.
While MR removed videos are interesting, they are still limited to what a television or stream can record. As a result, the sound on those videos are often murky and distorted, and finding the truth behind the MR depends primarily on the technical skill of the person doing the MR removing. All in all, it’s hardly anything you want to judge an idol’s talent on.
Ideally, you’d like to get the MR itself so that you can know for certain which members excel on stage without help, and perhaps more interestingly, what the companies themselves think of the talent level of their own artists.
Well fortunately for us and for you, Asian Junkie recently acquired three official MR tracks.
—–
A source in the industry has provided us with three music recordings that the companies give the music stages to use for their artists.
Unfortunately (or fortunately if you’re a hater), two of them, Super Junior’s “Mr. Simple” and T-ara’s “Roly Poly”, are only interesting in the sense that both groups might as well lip sync their songs on stage. For both tracks, the MR basically plays the entire song at full volume in the background for all the members, making it basically impossible to screw up live and completely uninteresting to you and me, other than the fact that we now know watching live performances of these songs basically amount to watching the music videos.
Bleh.
Fortunately, the third MR is SNSD’s “The Boys”, and it’s significantly more interesting because the MR comes and goes depending on the vocalist.
Unlike for the other two MRs, I need to give an audio example to show the breakdown of the parts, so I uploaded it as a video.

Perhaps to hardcore fans, it’s a bit of a Captain Obvious moment, but if nothing else, you can basically confirm your own suspicions as far as what SM Entertainment thinks of SNSD’s live performing capabilities.
Unsurprisingly, Taeyeon stands out, needing assistance only with the inhuman high note at the end of the final verse. Jessica didn’t have much help either, but her parts didn’t require much range, and she gets assistance on the only segment that shows any. The real underrated members in this song are probably Sunny and Seohyun, especially the latter since she was required to hit high notes like Jessica and Taeyeon but did so without backing.
No surprise that YoonA‘s not an amazing singer, but her part had basically zero range and she might as well lip sync the entire thing. Maybe she does, who knows? As for Hyoyeon, I know rapping live is hard for those who aren’t legitimate rappers, but I’m a bit disappointed that the whole thing is basically track. I expected it out of the Yuri/YoonA/Sooyoung rap/talk trio, but not out of her.

The beauty of the MR audio though is that there’s no need to take my word for it regarding whichever artist is in question, as the company created the track and it speaks for itself.
Asian Junkie Asian pop. Without discretion.
Seohyun is actually the only member that helps the rest of the bitches out. D:
On Korean music programs, they tend to litter live performance recordings with head shots, but when SNSD performed on Letterman + Live!, you could clearly see Seohyun singing in unison with Taeyeon during all of her high note moments.
Like a boss.
And she doesn’t even feel the need to take any credit. She’s just like, “that’s right, bitches.”
Was impressed with her.
When I saw her covering for yoona on live with kelly (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ne0V1SIPsiw at about 2;03)
I felt a little empathetic. It’s like that feeling of something be incredibly unfair. It could all the sones who claimed yoona could sing well during the boys promotions.
I didn’t even notice that. She does all the fucking work in this group, holy shit.
Seohyun is going to be the only relevant snsd member. Why? Because she is consistent in everything she does. But yea, she is about as emotional as a toaster….
Snsd better days are way behind them.
Talent-wise, yeah.
But she’s sort of in between shit though. She’s the most talented but not interesting at all.
Well, I wish I could say I was surprised, but.. I’m not. SNSD are very lacking when it comes to performing their songs live, whether it’s “The Boys”, “Hoot”, “Gee” or whatever song they’ve released throughout their years. It doesn’t take a genius to notice, but I’ll give Taeyeon credit, since she basically pwns her parts every single time.
Besides, whenever YoonA opens her mouth and it legit sounds like she’s singing, you know there’s something fishy going on, because she never sings live.
No mention of Tiffany? Well her parts are just as loud as the others so no big difference I guess.
I totally agree about Seohyun being completely underrated. She’s been given many harmonizing parts over the years but few notice. She also seems to have the most stamina out of all 9. Even at the end of the song, she still sounds like the song just started. Her problem is that she has the emotional capacity of a statue on stage (Seo-bot).
This makes me even more depressed looking back at 2007 radio performances when everyone sang loudly including Yoona and her off-key singing but she did it proudly.
Yeah, I truly miss their past radio performances. Something that Gee-era fans will never get to experience :’D
I also miss how Jessica used to pwn everyone during Into The New World & 1st album promotions. After they gave her those awkward lines in Oh! she kind lost her stage power hmm.
Tiffany’s most significant contribution to this seemed to be saying, “WE BRING DA BOYZ OUT! WE BRING DA BOYZ OUT!”
Those girls can never be successful in the US with these type of performances. Cringeworthy in Letterman even. SM is deranged. The US will pick them apart. Seohyun seems to be used and less praised for her stable performances these past years. She’s even surpassed Sunny and Tiffany to be the 3rd good singer in the bunch. Just more emotion displayed would get her to connect to the audience more.
It was pretty noticeable how YoonA sounded exactly the same in every The Boys performance, but I couldn’t tell about Yuri and Sooyoung’s lipsynching. They have sung live more often than YoonA and Hyoyeon so I just assumed they did for The Boys. Disappointing.
T-ara and Super Junior’s cases are worse, though. And so many other groups do the same, having loud vocals in their MR and earning praise for their “live singing skills”. Meh.
Unless you have legitimate rapping talent (Eminem), it’s incredibly difficult to flow live like on track, so that wasn’t a surprise for me, even if it was a talk rap.
By the way I think I know who your “insider” is, but I’m not supposed to out him, right? :o
Well I’m obviously not going to comment on it either way.
Im not a fan of snsd at all as you all know lol. But I will give credit where its do and that goes to Seohyun. She did what she was suppose to do. As for yoona and jessica they can still suck it.
I always thought Seohyun was the only one who could really sing but she has zero personality, which won’t get her far.
While i agree that Seohyun is underrated, her singing is really painful to listen to lately. It’s Taeyeon who saved the group’s live performances…
Btw lol at no Tiffany in the breakdown
If you had a heirarchy of snsd vocally I believe it would be like this.
Taeyeon
Jessica
Tiffany Seohyun
then the rest of them.
How the fuck is Jessica your second tier?
What do you think then?
Taeyeon
Jessica Tiffany Seohyun
then the rest?
I would go with that as well.
How would your heirarchy go?
Taeyeon
Seohyun

Jessica/Tiffany

Doesn’t Matter
Eh… Seohyun is a better singer than Jessica these days. I was never a fan of her nasal voice to begin with, but Seohyun is pretty much proof that hard work pays off. She’s the one covering for Yoona and harmonizing with Taeyeon, after all.
I seriously cannot tell what is good vocal talent, but I’ve read that Jessica has amazing control and while Tiffany’s raw voice is good, she tends to just use power without technique. I haven’t read much about Seohyun’s voice, and she is amazing at replicating studio versions and dancing without mistakes. I just wish she has the stage presence that BoA has and then she’d be amazing.
Jessica’s voice is nice until she’s forced to show range.
The whole article can be summaries in short: “Super Junior sucks”
Kinda makes you wonder what these idols are really learning in the music companies’ farm system prior to their debuts.
To suck dicks under tables
