In your anger at Jenny Hyun, don’t become what you hate

IATFB 02/18/2012 35

As you already know by now, I’m not a fan of Jenny Hyun and her racist ways. While I think she deserves every ounce of criticism launched her way, answering her bigotry with bigotry of your own or threats of violence is not the answer.

In a recent blog post, Jenny Hyun addressed all the recent attention by issuing an “apology”:

Yeah, that’s not an apology at all. That’s a “I got caught spewing bullshit and people aren’t happy with me so please be satiated with this half-assed attempt at saying sorry” post.

Hyun even says herself that she doesn’t regret what she said. If it was real life, she would have written her apology on a piece of paper, crumbled it up, and thrown it at our face while stomping off in a huff.

Essentially, she has learned nothing.

—–

Still though, if what she says about people threatening her is true, it’s disturbing on a different level.

In a nutshell, it makes you a hypocrite to be angry with her for being a racist and then responding with similar stupidity.

Calling her out for her bullshit is fair game, and so is telling her why she’s wrong and trying to hold her responsible for her actions through K-pop means. But for those of you who are going further than that, you are becoming part of the problem, not the solution.

Don’t let your anger towards Jenny Hyun’s racism turn you into just another Jenny Hyun.

It’s been proven through her past blog posts that she has severe mental issues.

//The problem with my illnesses is that they cannot be cured, only treated. Every day is a battle with my brain, which works against me often.//
    http://jennyhyun.wordpress.com/2011/08/16/psyche-update/
//Since I was 20 yrs. old I have tried virtually every psychiatric medication under the sun.//

It also says in another entry she was hospitalized for a nervous breakdown. I’ll stop here because I don’t want to bash someone who is obviously unwell.
Not that it excuses her tweets or her views etc.”

I bet she hasn’t tried Jesus yet.

      • apinkfeeling 02/19/2012 at 5:21 AM -

        …?

        • CheesyChua 02/19/2012 at 6:16 PM -

She mentioned all the types of therapy she tried but I doubt she has tried praying about it.

      • IATFB 02/20/2012 at 4:40 AM -

Probably because Jesus won’t magically solve mental illnesses, much like he won’t fix broken bones.

    • pominitslut 02/19/2012 at 7:06 AM -

If that is the case then I genuinely feel bad for her and I hope she leaves her SNS accounts for her own sake.

    • IATFB 02/20/2012 at 4:39 AM -

While that sucks, the damage is done: both to her and the people she was disparaging.

  4. CheesyChua 02/19/2012 at 4:57 AM -

Yeah basically she’s only apologizing because people threatened her life.

  5. mcf 02/19/2012 at 5:38 AM -

Anyone who stalks this woman over some racist tweets is way more of a psycho than she is.

    • abuja19 02/19/2012 at 8:19 PM -

Quiet, you. Don’t you dare go glossing over the nonsensical crap that she uttered. In fact, the only reason that I could think of why you would choose to ignore the shit that moron said was if you agreed with her crap as well….in which case, you would be just a slimy and worthless as she is.

      • IATFB 02/20/2012 at 4:41 AM -

No, what does stalking her accomplish?

        It’s stupid and pointless.

      • mcf 02/20/2012 at 1:54 PM -

I’m not excusing anything she said. But any level-headed person should consider showing up at someone’s house and threatening them as psychotic behavior.

I’m pretty sure this woman is already going to pay for what she said (professionally).

No matter what, showing up at her house and threatening her is crossing the line. That type of behavior is more typical of a KKK lynch-mob.

    • IATFB 02/20/2012 at 4:41 AM -

      Equally stupid.

  6. Chanran 02/19/2012 at 7:17 AM -

She locked her twitter as well, this doesn’t solve anything though.

    • --- 02/19/2012 at 8:31 AM -

The “official apology” post on her blog was also deleted. I guess she plans on riding the storm by pretending nothing ever happened, which is a pretty poor solution.

    • pominitslut 02/19/2012 at 8:41 AM -

Her name pretty much blew up on Twitter so yeah. I wonder what the people who found out her address will do now.

I’m no doctor (yet), but seems like she need some serious mental help.

    • IATFB 02/20/2012 at 4:42 AM -

Regardless of whether it’s true about her condition at the time, I would argue that nobody sane could say the shit she was saying.

    Such a pompous, megalomaniacal loonie!

What a degenerate. She goes and spews a bunch of pathetic crap because some boxer gave a valid opinion on Lin’s instant success and popularity in the NBA. What a joke and hypocrite she is. I do NOT feel sorry for her and whatever danger she got herself into by typing a bunch of racist, supremacist, anti-black crap will be her own fucking undoing. Lousy trash.

    • IATFB 02/20/2012 at 4:43 AM -

Putting her in danger is ironic though, because you’re becoming what you hate.

Have you guys seen this? Her attempt to save her face…

    • IATFB 02/20/2012 at 4:45 AM -

Not a stretch to believe she has serious issues. I mean, to write the shit she was writing…yeah.

Still doesn’t excuse anything though. She damaged herself and many others with hate speech, including the people who tipped me about it.

To pretend it didn’t happen, as some people would like to do, is probably the worst thing.

Do a search on her blog. One for “medication” brings up some posts.

I was furious at what she wrote, but she obviously has battled mental illness. She apparently just had a very public mental episode.

    • IATFB 02/20/2012 at 6:00 AM -

Wasn’t one episode, if you went back through her timeline, you’d see it went on for weeks, if not months.

      Makes sense though.

  13. badkpopfairy 02/20/2012 at 12:24 PM -

She is clearly not sane. We are all saying that it does NOT excuse any of her actions… but honestly, how sick does someone have to be for it to excuse their actions?

I’ve personally dealt with people who are very mentally ill, and I honestly can not say that their sickness doesn’t excuse them acting up on me, or calling me names. I would feel angry or sad about it, but in the end I understand that they can’t control certain outbursts. Schizophrenia, for example, is so complex, its very hard to understand. Its hard to tell whats real and not real apart, its hard to think logically, its hard to have normal emotional reactions.
I apologize I’m going on about it, but I did some community service at a mental institution for college and I experienced it first hand.

Now of course, I’m not making excuses for her. I don’t think we can ever judge how sick she really is or how much she uses this excuse to justify her actions.

My question is, I know it says that she is a songwriter for SNSD, Chocolat, etc… do we know what songs she has written? Do we know is any of these bands have acknowledged her as their songwriter. Because hey, I can say I write songs for Big Bang, doesn’t make it true. I’m just curious if anyone has that type of info?

PS: Threatening or abusing someone just because they have an opinion other than yours (however fucked up this opinion may be) is also not very sane. Just sayin.

    • IATFB 02/20/2012 at 3:51 PM -

Not up to us to excuse her.

Maybe you or I don’t take it personally anymore, but I can’t speak for others who are affected by this type of shit daily.

      Dunno.

If Chris Brown had the same affliction, does that excuse him for beating Rihanna half to death?

      Not up to us, really.

    • persianOUTKAST 02/21/2012 at 10:45 AM -

as a psychology major (among other things), i agree w/ what you’ve said.
as far as answering your question … http://jennyhyun.wordpress.com/about/
i guess to really know for sure, you’d have to buy the CD’s & read the tiny print inside the liner. but seems to be legit.

  14. FatKittens 02/20/2012 at 11:56 PM -

Her comments were disgusting – I’m disappointed that people have gone so far as to track her down to her house. I would have expected better…

  15. dago 02/21/2012 at 2:14 PM -

Talk about jenny hyun, SNS anyone? Never heard of the bunch.

To tell you the Truth,….I was NOT really suprised those comments came from a korean. Honesty here! but please she’s a NOBODY I could care less, and since it’s confirmed she has mental issues so…

However, she did hit a nerve when she mentioned the name Whitney Houston.
I might just stalk you….i take no excuse for that one.

  16. AthenasGrief 03/18/2012 at 1:38 AM -

I’m sorry to say this, but I think she deserves the threats. I’m not crazy enough to make nor carry them out, but yea… I don’t feel bad for her at all.

I’m a black woman living in Asia, and I can tell you that she won’t suffer over here AT ALL for what she said. So, I’m glad she’s suffering in some for at her home in America. The stupid biotch should feel uncomfortable. She said uncomfortable things. They say, “if you can’t stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen.”

    • IATFB 03/19/2012 at 4:00 AM -

      Sort of my point.

If you do the same as her, you are becoming her in a way.

Reinforces stereotypes as well, which does nothing positive for relations.
