Need a good album to calm your nerves? Well, you’re in luck because I found one that might do the trick.

Ballad singer Yoo Ho Seok – stage name Evan – has been serenading listeners since 1999 as a member of the boy band Click-B. After the band’s split in 2002, Evan flew to study overseas, coming back as a soloist in 2007.

This week, he dropped his latest mini-album, “Trying Not To Remember“.

Once upon a time, I used to be really into ballads more than all the crazy ass shit I listen to today. So much so that I helped a lot of you (the older readers of my site, McRoth’s Residence) appreciate the art of a slow song. I can’t say I’m as invested in ballads as I used to be, but hopefully you’ll hear the heart of Evan’s latest work because it’s definitely got one.

I don’t know a lot about Evan, but I do know that his material had a little more kick in it before this release (see: “Make You Cry“), while “Trying Not To Remember” comes off very sad and somber. It has a dark cloud hanging over it that never really lightens up, but given the melancholy themes, that’s probably the point.

Evan’s voice is what stands out the most in this album. It’s thin and at times a little squeaky, like he’s trying to sing you a lullaby, but you can’t help but get choked up half the time. In a way, that’s pretty much all this four track mini reminds me of: a drawn out lull. It’s calm, soft spoken, and completely emotional.
