Ask Asian Junkie: Do You Listen To Any Other Asian Music? Why Or Why Not?

I never thought my musical taste outside of K-pop or J-pop would be interesting at all, but this surprisingly isn’t the only time I’ve gotten an inquiry about it.

Apart from K-pop and J-pop, do you listen to other Asian music? Why or why not? What makes it appealing or not appealing?

No, I don’t listen to any other Asian music besides Korean and Japanese.

Why? Well, if I’m being totally honest, it’s because I don’t find the other Asian languages aurally pleasing. Dunno, just not pleasant to listen to for me.

Additionally, the production quality seems generally inferior as well, apart from some quality Chinese stuff I’ve heard.

Personally though, I can’t get past the language thing. I listen to music primarily because it sounds good, so it’s a deal breaker.

Just keeping it real.

I have nothing better to do, so send me your questions here: Ask Asian Junkie.

  1. Is it true that cantonese sounds like a bunch of ducks quacking?

Yeah pretty much. There’s some good Philippines music and Thai and Chinese music that I consider better than kpop or jpop. but hell kpop and jpop just offer way more. u have to dig pretty deep, or be obsessed with lets say Thai culture like me. With all of the file sharing and anti mixtapes its also harder to find underground music. My 2 cents. Then U got some of the Thai companies I won’t call out any names, but they are putting their music and blocking it from YouTube. They are trying to squeeze an extra dollar out by making you pay to watch the MVs. Japan used to do that but they opened their eyes and saw you can’t controll the internet. but alright I think i said way too much for a normal person to bother reading. //my 2 cents.

for anyone that didn’t bother to read the above. here’s a short summary: yeah your’e right their are inferior, good luck finding any good Asian music besides kpop and jpop

    • Right.

It’s like you would probably have to be into the scene to get that stuff and I just can’t be fucked.

      :o

  4. I’m not into Kpop and i love Jpop so much. I do listen to other Asian music but i don’t like it too much. Actualy, there are some good music apart from Jpop and Kpop but i can say that there are not much diversity. Simply said, most of them are focusing on love..

  5. Jolin Tsai is the only Chinese artist I listen to, and that’s only because she’s so hot. It’s worth it to listen to songs I don’t understand at all just for her MVs.

  6. I like Mandopop, but I don’t know too much about it and who the artists are. Other than that I listen to Thai music. Pop is not really their forte, but they have a lot of good rock bands, indie, and R&B singers.

    • I like thai pop a lot. And their mv’s are always pretty good. They do a lot of story mode.

      • Pretty much Mandarin and Thai are like the only other languages has a good flow if put in songs. I never heard how Tagalog sounds like though.

I like some mandarin music like
Jay Chou and Tizzy Bac. Their music is just too good to pass up me thinks.

I agree with your point on language preference. I’m not a fan of the Cantonese language and therefore I can’t listen to the music.

I never got into Jpop (nor will I give it a chance) but I do LOVE J-Rock, J-Jazz and some video game & anime soundtracks.

  8. Other asian music? You mean theres others?? :P

I guess I am too used to japanese and korean to listen to any other asian language. Hell, I rarely even listen to my own country music.

  9. What about English-language music? Rocking any Maroon 5 over there? :D

  10. TEJANO.

  11. Yeah….I’m Vietnamese but I honestly think my language is not that pleasant sounding in songs. Jpop, Jrock, and Kpop for me, tho lately I’ve been more into Jpop/Jrock. I like how Jpop got some pretty good lyrics, even idol groups like AKB48, and there’s more variety. Lately I’m a little bored with kpop, there’s still some groups i like but idk……..everything feel stale somehow…:
Maybe that’s why I got more into Sunny Hill or BEG.

    • There’s a lot of good shit in Korea outside of idol pop.

      • Yeah but it’s harder to dig those things up since idols seem to be taking more attention =__=’
I’ll take recommendation if you got any. I already know Epik High, Tiger JK, Tasha, 8eight, 4men, Kan Mi youn, Supreme team but I want to know other artists.

Ali for a strong female vocalist and musical diversity in her latest solo album.
Urban Zakapa for stunning indie sounds (2 guys 1 girl).
Brown Eyed Soul for flawless ballads (male group).
Dynamic Duo for great k-hip-hop (male duo).
J.ae for a unique-sounding, delightful whispery female vocalist. If you aren’t impressed by her voice though, you probably won’t like her work.
Park Ji Yoon for a ballad goddess. Her ballads are absolutely outstanding (check her latest album).
Soulstar for a damn good K-R&B male group.

And lastly, IU for perfection o(≧▽≦)o

        • Oh I know Ailee but haven’t listened to her Heaven song yet.
          Thx for the recommendation.
I know IU but she’s like a walking sleeping pill for me musically. She remind me of Kana Nishino in Japan =___=’

I’m listening to ALi’s album now. She does have an amazing voice.

A few artists from Korea that I love (way more than any idol pop) include

Casker: electronic band that experiments with different sounds like spanish style.
A good song by them is: “나비부인”

LeeSsang: ALi collaborated with them before making her solo debut. They are a superb K-hip hop duo.
Song: “내가 웃는게 아니야 (With ALI)”

Outsider: known as the fastest rapper ever. Some of his songs are quite good though (incorporates a lot of orchestral instrumentals).
          Song: “주변인 ”

          Standing Egg: Great indie band.
          Song: “I’m Not Yours”

Sesame and Cotton Candy: Another indie band with a similar sound as Standing Egg. They are new and have only released an EP. They have great potential to be a very good band.
          Song: “Song A”

Tearliner: They made a few songs that I liked from the drama Coffee Prince.
          Song: “Ocean Travel”

          Humming Urban Stereo: Electronic band.
          Song: “Scully Doesn’t Know”

Hope you like some of them.

        • All this listed shit is good.

        • In addition to everything listed, check out Taru. I fucking love her. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cn5sDiyrcLM

  12. Cpop is the only pop music i can listen to without cringing, for traditional style type of music japan wins in that area hands down. Korean music is becoming too americanized, its like listening to american music but in korean and if i wanted to listen to that type of music ill just listen to the one i understand you know. I feel like Korea is losing their tradition. China and Japan they both have their own distinctive music style, you can tell right away when a track is “chinese” or “japanese”, Korea however, i just don’t see it. Sure they have trot but they don’t incorporate it into different genres. It’s like their music industry is following whatever America’s doing.

  18. Ehm, K-pop is the only Asian music I can handle right now.
Maybe Jpop will be my next thing to conquer but they’re difficult to find on youtube.
