With race being a popular topic in K-pop recently, a quote from one American industry source on the situation brought out the bandwagon moralists of Omona They Didn’t.
An entertainment industry source familiar with the U.S. market said, “The U.S. is one of the most culturally tolerant societies in the world. But when it comes to racial matters, Americans are also very sensitive.”
That’s the quote.
It was laughed at.
“OH STUPID ARROGANT AMERICANS THINKING WE”RE SO TOLERANT DON’T MAKE ME LAUGH LOLOLOLOL”
Right? Not really.
I seriously fail to see what’s so amusing about that quote.

America is far from perfect in the realm of tolerance, but was the American industry source wrong?
How many other places in the world are as tolerant and mindful of offending others as America? Seriously now, public figures who do or say offensive shit in America get absolutely obliterated by the media.
I just don’t see the problem with labeling America as one of the most tolerant societies in the world. Even if you disagree that’s it’s in the top five or so, the quote is at least in the fucking realm of reality, hardly anything to laugh or snark about.
As a minority myself, I’m fully aware that America still has a long way to go, but while you shit on America for the job we’ve done, credit should be given as well, because while we still have work to finish, the majority of other countries haven’t even built a foundation yet.
Ironically, perhaps more people would realize that if they stepped out of their insular America-centric worlds.
Asian Junkie Asian pop. Without discretion.
Amen to this bro!
While america is far from perfect. I have to say its far better then some other places I’ve been to,as far as tolerance goes.
I’ve been to countries where people would literally stop me and take pictures of me because they never seen a mixed light skinned black guy before!!
People think Europe is so progressive too, but you get stared at as an Asian in France.
:o
Geez, that’s crazy.
People really need to get out of there bubble-wrapped world.
wtf…maybe in the rural areas..
Eiffel Tower isn’t rural, is it?
no, but theres also no french people at the eiffel tower.
CL (2NE1) briefly told a story about how her and her father were treated very rudely in France while on vacation together.
My cousin lives in Manchester, England and she told me that the people there are kinda insensitive with Eastern Asians more than one would be with South Asians. Her nickname in high school was chinky. Just for that, I can’t see myself being in her shoes letting people call me whatever. Fuck that, I’ll get suspended everyday if I had to from whopping ass on a daily basis.
In America’s next generation, racism and bigotry will be a taboo, if not already now. Us Americans just dont get out too often so we don’t notice how liberal we really are, the younger ones at least.
I guess it’s trendy to make fun of/criticize oneself or country, or do anything to somehow make the topic about us when it isn’t.

Saw this too. couldn’t help to laugh a little.
(And yes I do understand it is pretty offensive, don’t want another black face comment section)
Yes, nobody refers to black people as “colored” anymore.
Americans complain a lot about America.. while I know we have many problems we need to fix… compared to other countries, I’m grateful for what I have here. I get tired of weaboos ( a few Koreaboos.. most just bash on Korea like crazy >_> ) always saying how better Japan or some other country is compared tot he US.. People don’t take the time to appreciate what’s here.
Now I do get bothered when some say “America’s not racist!!!! Where I live it’s blah blah blah…” Well yeah… where they live.. I live in a state that has some of the ghettoest, dangerous cities out there at the same time like 20 minutes where I live have mansions and stores where I’d get stared down at sooo hard. I don’t want people to turn a blind eye (many do forget it was just mere decades ago that segregation in schools & such ended well.. at least it’s against the law) but don’t want others to ignore the rights, laws & freedoms we have that’s almost non-existent in other places. I mean, which country has places where gay marriage is legal? Korea or the US? Yeah… Let alone celebs out there in the US being less fearful in being suspected as being gay/confirmed gay or else they’ll be slammed in the papers.
I read those comments too.. someone gave a nice loong detail opinion on it ^^
You get killed for being gay in Africa.
Omonatheydidn’t is just lol lulzy at this point, they make themselves look stupid.
Word.
They have intelligent commentary, but so much of it just revolves around overreacting to everything and shutting down anything that the group think doesn’t agree with.
Seriously, most of these people commenting aren’t even American and probably have never been here. I’m not American, but I’ve lived here for the past four years and I’ve studied racial and ethnic politics, and while I do live in one of the most accepting places in the US (Cali), I can say without a doubt that America is definitely within the most accepting countries in the world.
Just look at the statistics, would a country that’s so racist allow in millions of different ethnicities and give them the equal protection of the law and the opportunity to live a decent life? America is not perfect by any means, but all these haters from elsewhere, yeah you can go shove your 90%+ ethnic homogeneity thanks.
While racism exists in serious numbers in the US, at least over here, the country actually HAS a perception of what racism entails. Other countries, and I can say this with firsthand experience, don’t even realize the things they say or do are racist.
I wonder which is the better situation to be honest…
You’re defended in one situation at least.
“While racism exists in serious numbers in the US, at least over here, the country actually HAS a perception of what racism entails. Other countries, and I can say this with firsthand experience, don’t even realize the things they say or do are racist.”
That perception was only obtained due to past atrocities against minorities in America.
To use an analogy it’s like a reformed rapist who’s found God and became a nice non-raping guy. Hey it’s great you turned your life around and became a nice Christian guy, that doesn’t change the fact you raped a bunch of women and only through the guilt of those crimes you became a nice guy.
As opposed to other countries who are still doing the deed.
Both are bad, one is worse.
I don’t even bother with OmonaTheyDidn’t. Insufferable members.
OmonaTheyDidn’t used to be fun before it became another Soompi and Allkpop :
Back to the subject, I do have to agree. America is tolerant to an extent. I think it’s an older generation vs newer generation thing. After taking a racism/gender equality/sexuality etc class, you can really see how far America really has come in the last decades or so. As interracial marriages became more common and the more biracial individuals there are, the more America has become tolerant with different races/ethnicity.
America isn’t perfect, there’s still racism in some places…..the more you go further south….But US is still very tolerant place. There’s many ethnics living there that let them be more open to other cultures as well as biracial marriage and dating isn’t a big deal anymore.
I’m sick of people generalizing American, 300 million something people as “intolerant racist”…
Well said.
Yeah I’d love one of those kids to fill in the blank for me.
America is waaaaaay less tolerant than __________.
Aww, they just took it out of context. But yes. Complete agreement with you.
I saw that too! Then I just left the article b/c I realized I was probably dealing with children/teenagers who find it “cool” to talk about how much their own country sucks
I would agree, when we’re talking about right now.
In the past, not so much.
Part of the reason the United States is so tolerant in the first place is because it had to learn the hard way. Slavery, Jim Crow, Japanese internment, the Chinese exclusion act, etc.
But right now is what’s important to you and me and this comment.
First off, glad I found this site. Second, I definitely think the US ranks in the top in terms of tolerance. I grew up in the south and just recently moved to nyc. I’ve experienced racism in both parts of the country so no, the north is not a racism-free haven haha(you would be surprised how segregated nyc can be) which brings me to this: Why do people come to the US with prejudices and racist ideas? Do we blame media for this?
There’s racism no matter where you go. That’s just a reality, I think.

People come here with prejudice for the same reason people are prejudiced to begin with. Environment and education, mainly.
Media is part of the environment, yes. I would say parents is the most significant factor.
