m-flo’s Taku Takahashi’s J-pop rant on Twitter only made him look like a bitter hypocrite

Let me start off by saying that I love m-flo‘s work. I’ve been a fan since they debuted and have enjoyed their evolution, both musically and personally.

If you haven’t heard already though, member Taku Takahashi sort of lost his marbles on Twitter today, ranting about everything J-pop related.

Personally, I don’t think he’s wrong. J-pop hasn’t been great recently and it’s frustrating because the actual talent in the industry gets no publicity in comparison to idol groups.

My problem with what he’s saying though is that he just comes off like a bitter man and he’s being insanely hypocritical.

Why bitter? Let’s just say I doubt this rant is a coincidence, as m-flo’s major comeback album, “SQUARE ONE“, shit the bed on the charts, clocking in at #13.

Alrighty.

So basically he admits that all he wants out of this is for you to buy the album. You can say anything you want to him if you buy the album. If not, then don’t talk to him until you buy the album. In conclusion, buy the album.

So yeah, I’m sure this rant wasn’t at all related to the poor sales.

—–

Why a hypocrite? Because prior to today’s release, back when they were dominating the charts, he had no problem with J-pop or working with idols, did he? In fact, he used that genre for vocalists to his benefit time and time again.

And he’s still using it today.

He’s shitting on J-pop and what it’s become … but he just worked with 2NE1, an idol group that’s part of the biggest trend in J-pop today.

So … uh … what?

Alrighty then.

So when they worked with Crystal Kay, Amuro Namie, Melody, Hinouchi Emi, Ryohei, Koda Kumi, Monkey Majik, Bonnie Pink, Bennie K, Yoshika, Emyli, Chemistry, BoA, and many others, he’s saying they did so simply because the duo was inspired by their heavenly musical quality?

Really?

REALLY?!

It just makes him look ridiculous, like the only reason he doesn’t realize what a double standard he’s setting is because he thinks he’s above it, despite the fact that his most successful run was by achieved by being part of the exact system he’s hating on.

Yeah, SNSD isn’t pop music. Definitely not.

—–

Of course, after he said what he said, Taku then started retweeting everybody who agreed with him and kept himself busy by replying to people like he’s the victim in all this, as if he did nothing to provoke a reaction or something.

Woe is him.

But look, nobody is shitting on him for doing what he wants or saying what he wants. People like me are shitting on him because on one hand he wants to crap all over the pop music scene like some bitter hipster, but on the other hand he has and still wants to collaborate with idols.

Sorry, but you can’t have your cake and eat it too, buddy. It’s akin to wanting to rebel against the system, but at the same time, take payment from the system and do their bidding. Maybe delusional fans don’t see the ridiculousness of it, but there are people who can see right through the bullshit.

—–

All I’m saying is that he shouldn’t shit on the industry that made him just because he got pressed that his album flopped.

When he started his rant, he immediately painted himself as a uncensored truth teller.

The reality though is that he’s not a rebel who’s stating shit that nobody else knew, and he wasn’t sharing any insight, he just came off like a bitter hypocrite that was insecure about his status in the industry going forward.

That’s the real truth.

I started following him because of this (I like when people get angry/emo on twitter). I lol’d at him and that giggleplz person ripped him a new one, I sort of wanted to give him a hug. If the rest of the album sounds anything like that 2ne1 track I wouldn’t want to buy it. Guess he should go back to he drawing board.

  3. I have to agree. He cant crap all over the people that help made him famous when he was doing well on charts. But oh well. I guess he feels better if he cries about it? And id be pissed if he worked with snsd. All hope would be lost then.

  4. All I see are the KFC chunky chicken pot pie ads.
We dont have that in South Africa, sounds like it tastes good.

My J-pop knowledge is zero but from what you’ve written he does sound pressed and very hypocritical.
“All they want are pretty girls who cant sing, but i want to work with SNSD”

He wants to work with the epitome of pretty faces with and VERY little talent. RIOGHT

He seems douchy,i dont fux with douches.

  5. m-flo was already famous before the Loves series, so how did he/m-flo become popular because of idols?

Last I knew, the album was #1 on iTunes Japan. They’ll do well digitally, since everyone who isn’t an idol does shit physically these days.

You listed a lot of acts that aren’t pop. Just saying.

    • Don’t be delusional just because you stan them.

It’s quite clear the guest features are what finally rocketed them to the top spot on the Oricon chart and produced their most successful run of singles.

iTunes Japan? Not even Recochoku? Come on. You sound like Jin Akanishi and SNSD fans when they talk about their American “accomplishments”.

Unless there’s a gigantic surge coming, it’s going to end up as their worst Oricon chart debut in their history. How that’s not a flop is beyond me.

Which of the acts aren’t pop? I don’t mean what they consider themselves, I mean in reality.

    • Plus, it’s not even about whether idols made them famous.

It’s about the fact that he shits on the pop industry and then ignores the fact that he worked with pop artists and wants to work with pop artists in the future.

OH MY GOD I HATE HOW ALL THESE POP SINGERS ARE JUST PRETTY FACES WITH NO SUBSTANCE STUPID IDOLS

WOULD LOVE TO WORK WITH SNSD PLUS J-POP IS DOWN TO KYARY PAMYU PAMYU AND PERFUME

      lol

That Kyary girl irks me to no end with her appearance alone (something in her eyes says serial killer). Just looked up some of her songs…everything about her annoys me now….I just realized what annoys me about a lot of J-pop songs…it sounds like childrens music with bad vocals. Do.not.want.

        • LMAO~ I love the part where he was like
OMFG NO GOOD MUSIC IN JPOP…….but Kyary and JE’s pedo group Sexy Zones is good shit!!!

        • Oh sorry I was in middle of class so can’t finish the comment. You should check out Beni, Koda Kumi, Namie Amuro, Ayumi Hamasaki. Jpop have a lot of diverse sound, way different from Kyary, I mean only like 10% of Jpop actually that type of sound. If you like R&B sound then EXILE, Matsushita Yuya, Daichi Miura, FLOWERS are really good artists to listen to, I especially love EXILE I wish for you and FLOWERS sakura regret + they’re really talented. Kana Nishino is good ballad singer (according to people..she’s like a sleeping pill to me) Her sound have resemblance to IU tho. Also Kuroki Meisa have good electronic pop. BRIGHT is a good group and their Bad girl ft AAA is a good song too.

Even idol groups like AKB48 who usually do more upbeat songs, do more grown up sounding songs like Beginner, River, Kaze wa Fuiteiru, Alive, and even songs like Keibetsu, which is about suicide. Their A6 and K6 stages have good songs too. People who don’t even like AKB have said they enjoy Beginner.

Alot of Jpop don’t sound like children songs, you just kinda have to know where to look..which is kinda hard..considering the lacking of Jpop vids on YT make finding things a bitch…

It won’t let me reply to you Mochi but I listen to pretty much everyone you listed and then some lol. I also like AI, Aisha, Kreva, RIZE, TsuShiMaMiRe, etc. I guess I should have been more clear, the stuff that gets the most coverage and it seems noticeable fans (in the west) is always the stuff that I don’t like. Post an AKB article there will be 10 million comments most of which is nonsense but a Kreva article will get like three tops.

        • It’s like that way in every industry.

      • I fucking love kyary pamyu pamyu.

She would be perfect if she could sing decently.

        Even just one live performance.

But what can you expect from a song like this http://bit.ly/wmTdWW

  6. i wanna see a akb x m-flo collab. that would be fun. :D

I don’t agree with Taku about jpop from 2003-2012 but i do respect his opinion that needs to be worded much better. he made himself sound wayyyyy too pressed on his tweets.

  7. Don’t bite the hand that feeds you…

  8. So he’s shitting on the shit he made from his shit? Or is he a victim of the shit? I’m confused.

  9. Have you done an update on this because Square One made it up to the #4 spot last time I checked. Taku’s rant wasn’t because of low sales, he’s been bitching about it for years. He has worked with so many talented singers that never got that recognition they deserved so of course he’s going to be pissed at the industry but, Taku is a huge hypocrite.

    • It’s a gigantic bomb either way.

The fact that he’s been bitching about it for years doesn’t change the fact that he works with idols and pop artists.

      :o

  10. Nevermind, it’s in 7th.

  11. So how is the new album anyway? Any good? Is it worth looking into?

    • I think the sales accurately reflect the album. :o

It’s still good, but not by m-flo’s past standards, IMO.

  12. Kinda late but omg Kumi looks sooo pretty right there~
