T-ara’s Jiyeon Angers Japanese Netizens … By Eating Out Of A Pot

T-ara‘s Jiyeon managed to draw the anger of Japanese netizens because she ate fucking food out of a pot.

No, really.

From about 0:50, the video pans to Ji-yeon sitting down to eat her finished meal when suddenly, for reasons unexplained, she removes the lid of the pot with one hand, plunges her chopsticks directly into the pot with the other, lifts up a mass of noodles and plops them down on the overturned lid as if it were a plate before transferring them into her cute little mouth.

OH FUCK

BURN HER AT THE STAKE

Finally, as if to add insult to injury, while sharing her thoughts about the taste with viewers, Ji-yeon grasps her chopsticks firmly in hand and drives them into the cutting board, presumably to keep them aligned before returning for another barbaric bite from her primeval lid-plate.

OH GURL NOW YOU’RE GOING TO HELL

This, ladies and gentlemen, was enough to raise a furor among Japanese net users, who wasted no words in bashing Ji-yeon for her “disgusting table manners,” while others expressed a renewed appreciation of Japanese manners. One of the current top comments is supported by 15 “likes” for saying that “eating straight from the pot like this is worse than beggars going to receive their food rations.”

YES

MODERN JAPANESE MANNERS LIKE BUMPING SCHOOLGIRLS ON CROWDED TRAINS WITH YOUR COCK

Unsurprisingly, many seem quick to condemn Ji-yeon’s eating style as indicative of South Korean manners in general, though there are a few who point out the futility of criticizing other cultures, but that Ji-yeon should be more conscious of how her status as an international pop idol reflects on South Korea’s image.

She should be more worried about whether or not Japanese people think she’s a cyclops from “Dragon Quest“.

OH SHIT YO

JIYEON COMING

Motherfuckers please, I’ve seen Japanese women eat live baby eels flying out of a vagina, so they don’t exactly have the manners high ground here.

Hahaha, when cultures don’t translate. If a westerner left his or her spoon upright in a bowl of rice, Koreans would be pissy as well. Apologize and move on. Was this a commercial specifically for Japan? If so, Korean companies should be mindful of etiquette. Want that yen, conform bitches. Cuz we all know Koreans are very vocal when you do something insensitive and piss them off. Hell, korean idols have apologized for looking fat on tv. meh.

  2. This might be the most WTF reaction I’ve ever seen to a video. I have.. quite a few videos of Japanese people with worse “manners” than this lol.

I remember getting daggers stared at me when I used my hand to eat a piece of sushi when I was out with my friends. When I noticed that, I thought they were going to throw actual daggers at me! Like, WTF, it fell apart and I didn’t have a fork, what I’m gonna do, bob my head on the plate to get it like some chicken or something? I mean there expression just screams: “YOU LOWLY WHORE! HAVE YOU NO SHAME!?”

    • I tot the seaweed that wraps around the sushi is for fingers to hold?

Even if there was no seaweed, the shape of the sushi is for easy eating, no?

But honestly, I saw in a K drama that the actress / actor ate off the lid of a pot, I was thinking, why does it taste better that way or you were too lazy to wash more plates – good idea to save on washing up?

I wouldn’t like to eat off the lid cover of a pot. I would prefer to eat ramen soup off a bowl or plate. I think it tastes better that way.

      • nana-ate-my-nana

Tons of people eat it straight out of the pot…she probably put it on the lid for the sake of the camera :o

it tastes better from the pot because all the soup is still there.

      • Yes. I first saw that ramyun eating practice in a gazillion k-dramas (those netizens have probably seen a dozen kdramas why are they surprised?) even I eat like that when I’m alone. If you ask me there’s nothing wrong with that but mehh, you know japanese/korean netizens and pretty much everyone on the internet, they will always pick on something. And yeah cultural differences perhaps.

    • What?

That’s how you’re supposed to eat sushi.

      • BaddestBitchHyorin

Idk what’s their problem. Probably they wanted me to use their sacred chopsticks instead of my dirty hands ::rolls eyes::

  4. Are these the same Japanese people that make a disgusting loud slurping sound when they eat their noodles?

Anybody who does that has no right to criticize anyone else on their “table manners”.

I’d rather watch Jiyeon eat noodles off the floor than listen to someone making sounds like a pig slurping its own snot out of a bowl.

    • Actually most Asian countries have that loud slurping noise not just Japan as it’s tradition to show deliciousness of a meal and it’s rude not to. They even burp loudly after a meal to show respect that the food was splendid. So no, I do not think you should place American etiquette with Asian etiquette. How do i know this? I’m Vietnamese and we do the same thing with pho.

I’m pretty sure it has to do with the past since back then most people were starving and whenever they had food they would slobber and eat away like it was their last meal. Eating quietly on the other hand is what Americans would say “manners” but for Asian culture it means “nasty food that you can’t bear to eat”. At least that’s what I think on the top of my head.

Maybe to Koreans eating noodles from the pot is normal but i haven’t seen any other Asian country eat noodles from a pot. Kind of weird to me.

      • BaddestBitchHyorin

Oh you’re Vietnamese, huh? I got a bone to pick with you people trying to make my people’s food. Last time I check, there shouldn’t be a puddle of FISH SAUCE in pad thai and pad gra pow looking like General Tso’s. Every freakin’ Viet place I go to does that! It’s madness I tell you! Why I eat Thai entries in a Viet restaurant you ask? It was out of curiosity! >:(

what? Asians supposed to eat like that? I haven’t seen anyone in my years of roaming in this earth who slurp or burp that hasn’t been criticized for bad table manners. and I live in asia too! they taught us not to talk while eating, plates and utensils shouldn’t make noise and never make a sound while chewing.and burp=respect for food?why??seriously??

        • It’s “etiquette” you’re not “supposed” to do it. You can choose to if you want to but you’re not forced. The loud slurping is the polite asian way of saying yumm. It’s pretty weird how you live in asia and never heard of this or even practice it as it’s quite the common knowledge about asian etiquette.

        • why-is-it-so-hard-to-comment-on-this-site

it is “manners” when it is part of a norm to you and the people around you.etiquette is optional, manner isn’t,right?burping is considered rude here that’s why i expressed shock at first but oh well,we live differently so..let’s just eat however we want.

        • nana-ate-my-nana

asia is a pretty big place, im sure customs differ..where are you two from?

        • why-is-it-so-hard-to-comment-on-this-site

          @nana
who’s pic in your pic?i thought you like nana bec of your username

        • nana-ate-my-nana

Its Hyeri from Girls Day….I love both of them.

        • Not all Asians are supposed to do that, like hunny said it’s optional and not forced & you have to do it in an appropriate place or else the thought is lost.

There are a bunch of Asian eating etiquettes but maybe you haven’t heard of them because let’s face it, almost everything is Westernized now.

        • @ why-is-it-so-hard-to-comment-on-this-site

Yeah, no one slurps or eats loudly in my part of Asia too. If he/she did, others will look at him/her. :-)

Maybe unless he/she is too hungry and alone…

        • why-is-it-so-hard-to-comment-on-this-site

@Canto::finally,i thought i was alone here, people generalizing asian manners based on what they are familiar with!it’s in their place you know, but asia consist of different countries so it is more likely that none of us here represent the WHOLE asia.

      • I’m going to start ripping loud, nasty-smelling farts when I eat around other people.

To wash the food down, I’m going to urinate into a glass right at the table and loudly gargle it before I swallow.

When other people at the table get offended, I’m going to say that’s its part of my regional culture and that they just need to respect that and stop being so culturally insensitive.

    • Everybody does that.

  5. huh. guess the marketing dept didnt do enough research.

because that would be perfectly fine. they even got the pot right for the korean audience. that particular metal pot is what koreans call the perfect pot for making ramen or any stew items.

  6. “One of the current top comments is supported by 15 “likes” for saying that “eating straight from the pot like this is worse than beggars going to receive their food rations.””

Okay now this is the comment that irks me, not the outcry about her table manners (let’s face it, we know Asians are sticklers for that sort of thing). This implies that it’s somehow shameful or sinful to be poor. What’s wrong with a beggar receiving food rations? What, would you rather leave them to starve on the street? You should be helping the poor get back on their feet, not looking down on them.

I mean I guess it’s all fine and well for all the old people to live for-fucking-ever and get the younger generations to support them, but nah, we can’t condone beggars, it makes us look bad.

  7. It’s really dumb how TD actually made a news article out of YOUTUBE COMMENTS.

Anyway Korean call Japanese monkey for eating with their rice bowl in the air, and Japanese think Korean are savages for eating ramen from the pot.

It’s just cultural differences tho it probably didn’t help the 2 countries don’t exactly get along.

  8. what is fucking wrong with beggars receiving food rations?

  9. Fuck this shit, let’s all just do like the Malays and eat with our fingers.

  10. Yet they chew with their mouths open and have nyotaimori restaurants (best idea ever). Yeah, very classy….Wouldn’t mind trying kalamari off a girl’s chest though.

Speaking about those dirty people, there’s a yeaba group called TYB48. Their fucking album title called “mind if I bite?” Bite my shit and I’ll knock those teeth into perfect rows bitch.

    • Asian table etiquette is obviously different from “Western” table etiquette. It’s not that one is better than the other, just different.

No idea about that nyotaimori shit, but it’s certainly not part of Japanese customs or traditions. It’s just some fetish cafe, like a maid cafe or a cat cafe. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

      • Yeah I know. Just being douchey about it. Whenever my people eat chicken wings or anything with the bones in it, we just spit them out anywhere. We slurp, belch, and all that shit. It’s considered a good thing. Borrowed a lot of Chinese ways of table manners too. Not only you tensed not to embarrass yourself, but just to fucking eat too. One wrong move, you’ll be cast out like a injured horse to a dog food factory. It depends where you at though.

        • BaddestBitchHyorin

So you’re Taiwanese then…and you try to call US savages? Bitch, you tried it.

BTW, what is everybody here? In a way its fun and nice to talk and know people and their backgrounds and stuff. Nothing have to be personal. It’s not like you gonna get stalked, killed, and eaten.

        • Good guess.Well, my last name on my username kinda gave a little away. I had to be either that or Chinese.

        • Well since you all are giving out info, I’m from SE Asia too, Fil-Jap.

  11. nana-ate-my-nana

Table manners dont really apply when youre eating food alone in your own kitchen right as youre cooking it.

  12. Marketing team dun goofed.

The commercial is geared towards Japanese consumers, so the FIRST thing they should’ve done was do a little research on how Japanese people usually eat their ramen. It’s really not that difficult to find out that Japanese people don’t eat their food out of a pot.

Their second mistake was using Jiyeon as a CF model. A much bigger folly, imo. Partly because she’s cross-eyed and partly because she supposedly resembles a certain Korean actress who is pretty much hated in Japan…

    -__-

    • nana-ate-my-nana

Japanese NEVER eat out of the pots? Really? Cos ive seen it in real life….

and its a series..you see the member selection graphic? they are all doing one of these days.

i wonder if these ads were specifically made for japan or made for korea first and then had the japanese text added after?

      • Something like nabe, yes. You eat that out of a pot. It’s a hotPOT dish. But the way Japanese people eat RAMEN is from a bowl…

I don’t know if they were trying to save money or something, but if the intention was to market this product to both Korean AND Japanese people, they should’ve thought of a different way to advertise it. They way you eat a dish, no matter what country it originated from, will differ depending on where you live.

Although, I think the “outraged” people are just being dramatic or the article is overexaggerating~

        • nana-ate-my-nana

No, im talking about ramyun too….we are talking about instant ramyun here right? Not restaurant ramyun..

I havent spent much time in japan but i have had japanese housemates..and they would cook ramyun on the stove and eat it straight out of the pot. Same as koreans.

          i dunno…

  13. Fuck yea, thats how us south/southeast asians eat!!!!

    Fuck utensils!!!

  14. Jiyeon is so hot. i want her to eat ramen off my nostriles.

  15. Ah so creepy-eyes is Jiyeon. Thanks.

  16. I’m in college. This is a daily occurrence for me. Saves me from washing too many fucking dishes.

  17. First, wtf even, I fail to see the logic in that… even remotely.

Second, this got so many comments lol.

Third, so if Jessica was using chopsticks in her fist to eat ramen out of a pot with the lid, would that have absolutely exploded on here?

  18. It was seriously stupid that anybody got mad about that.

  19. I’m not sure if this has been mentioned in the comments already but the reason for the controversy is because she ate it out of the lid not the pot itself. Also Hyomin twitted a rebuttal about the controversy https://twitter.com/#!/b89530/status/197881483799703552

  20. youownmyproductivity

i would like to see how she feels when i eat her straight from a pot.

  21. mybiasbeatsyourbias

That’s funny because its just not Asians.

I’m Puerto Rican and you don’t eat from pots. Three things you don’t do in a Rican household.

    1) Eat out of a damn pot. Put it on your plate and then eat it. Rather insulting and just very poor table side mannerism. Okay eat either your hands like chicken and stuff but don’t ever eat out of that pot. You can tell Asian are so tame because usually you’ll get it thrown at you for doing that.

2)Leave a pot in the frig…that might just be my mother and my uncle…kinds crazy…like murderous crazy about that one. My dad did that one time (he is West Indian) my mother woke him up out of dead sleep to crush him out. Than made him clean the pot.

3)Not have enough food for everybody. Your lucky to be still alive after that one.

  22. People losing their shit over this have missed the point completely. That brand of instant ramen (Shin Ramyun) is marketed as THE Korean style spicy ramen. It has T-ara’s picture on it and, most recently, there is a “black” version with BEAST on the packaging. As all k-drama viewers know, that pot is the quintessential ramen pot with a lid that is flat on the underside for the exact purpose of being used as a “plate”. So I THINK the point was to show this Korean instant ramen being eaten in a Korean style by the damn people on the damn packaging which is T-ara. DAMN.
