This is interesting. My personal experience is that guys are always a lot nicer to me than girls.
Guys generally treat me very nicely. Even if I was nice to a girl, she may not always reciprocate. Once I experimented cutting off my hair to wear a short boy’s do, and I put on thick black rimmed glasses. Then surprisingly girls made friends with me very easily and did not hold back.
So my conclusion is that girls liked me much better when I looked like a guy.
But of course I couldn’t look like a guy forever just to please girls.
Seriously now, it is because of competition. Girls are competitive in subvert ways because traditional gender roles do not allow us to show our aggression openly like guys can.

But when I entered a co-ed environment, I had only 1 or 2 good girl friends whom we hang out and talk about anything. Guy acquaintances were nicer to me, like offering to help with homework, sharing food, offering to run errands, driving you out for lunch or inviting you out for group outings while girl acquaintances were not unfriendly but more distant.
Most guys I had no interest in but it was nice to have an older brother to hang out with sometimes. I am a girl’s girl type, likes typical girls’ stuff.
