Okay, so I know I already wrote about this before, but a random theory just sprung into my head. Now when I have an idea, things usually go downhill fast, but I don’t care, it’s my site.
Anyway, so I figure that SM Entertainment can’t be fucking stupid to make all their money and get this irrational fan loyalty to what essentially amounts to a brand, so the only rational conclusion to f(x)‘s utterly ridiculous, unexplainable, and unjustifiable concept picture is that the company is just testing their power.
It’s like somebody at the company said: “Okay, we’re gonna test exactly how powerful our brand is. Let’s just throw some random heads on them usually used for horror films and/or “The Lion King” musical and/or bestiality fetish porn. If they buy this shit, they’ll buy fucking anything.”
Right?
Anyway, at the end of the day, I think the only revolutionary, untried, and untested concept left would be to … have them stand still in baggy, plain clothing and rely on their vocals.
Now that’s truly horrifying.

if that’s actually what they’re trying to do, it’s a terrible idea since f(x) doesn’t have such a loyal fan base like other SM artists do. i think SM is just trolling to get attention for f(x). i’m convinced SM doesn’t really know what to do with f(x) anyways.
another random theory i have is that SM might set aside a certain amount of money for teasers every year, but this year exo’s teasers used up the entire budget. it would certainly explain the awful cheap SM teaser photos we’ve seen this year.
I think suju has low budgeted teasers and mv but they were doing fine.

a big reason why SJ is popular is because of their variety show appearances and the individual members rather than their music. so while SM doesn’t put much effort in their music, they at least make sure SJ gets exposure in other ways. also it took 4 years for SJ to actually have a huge hit song.
They have loyal followers just on the basis that they are associated with SME.

I thought the same thing. Also I believe it’s because they’re transitioning to the American scene right now with all the “unique” fashion (Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga). Possibly because they’re just lazy and if they receive backlash or criticism, they’ll respond “It’s art”. Finally it gets people talking, as you mentioned before, fans are going to like them no matter what..so by introducing strange concepts, it gets people talking and generates publicity which is a marketing tactic I guess. In my opinion, it’s stupid, lazy and not art..just used to become relevant in the music scene for the fans and more of a “look at me!!” approach.
I get what you are trying to say but I do not think so.
(A) Because S is not that innovative and bold.
(B) At best they are copycats.
The other time I have seen beasts heads in advertising was in a luxury brand ad where the models were wearing beast heads but the product was the luxury brand bag. In this case the product are the girls, so I think this idea is crazy.

But…that’s just it though. SM has been pushing the envelope with how they market and rise anticipation from potential fans and existing fans alike. Look at EXO. The ridiculous amount of teasers. The “prologues.” The concept of them being gods of a planet that were somehow split up into K and M or some crazy thing like that. Look at SHINee and their risqué teaser photos. Taetiseo too.
I would’ve agreed with you a year ago when you say that SM is not that innovative or bold but this first half of 2012 has shown just how far SM is willing to go for racking up huge profits…and it’s been a success. They’ve been playing the “crazy teaser photos/incredible teaser videos” as of late and it’s been working VERY well for them.
Also consider the fact that SM is one of the Big 3. I was discussing this was other K-pop fans the other day about this loyalty that fans have with companies. SM, JYPE, and YG are essentially “brand names” in Korea now. Any group they release at this point is bound to get A LOT of attention and those who “stan” these companies will like just about anything that the company puts out. It’s all in the name right now. Yes, it’s arrogant but SM is successful enough to be arrogant, knowing that they have a tried and true formula that has been working for years for them.

SM stan are like zombies, you see comments like “I already got the money to buy it” in the teaser pictures, they haven’t even listen the album they will just buy it and like no matter how shitty it will be.
In this Suju article was this little bitches telling me that they are better fans because they bought at least 2 of their albums (from suju I have a Hangen’s fan I found in a chinese store nothing else), but little bitches just know like 5 songs (Sorry sorry, bonamana, Mr simple and opera).
My point is, SM spend the money in making (stupid) people worship the idols, after that they will buy anything to support oppirs/unnars

I think SM has been “testing their brand power” for a while now.
Their flagship group, SNSD, has been putting out shit the last year and a half and the fans just eat it all up.
The fans’ attitude toward the company is more like religious worship at this point than normal brand loyalty.
So, yeah – their brand (cult) at this point is pretty fucking solid.
The next SNSD music video will probably just be a completely black screen with static noise in the background. Fans will applaud it as “genius” and marvel at how SM created a blank canvas for fans to project their own mental images and sounds onto.
You know SM teasers for the past year have never been close to the finished product. Look at Mr. Simple, TTS, Sherlock, etc.
