IU recently made a mistake in Japan on Fuji TV‘s “Mezamashi TV“, but instead of being criticized for it, people said it was cute.
The singer was originally scheduled to sing four songs, including the Japanese version of “You & I“, and give a final commentary before returning for an encore song, should the fans request it. Unfortunately for IU, she had to sing and dance in the heat, and by the end of her performance, she had completely forgotten her closing commentary.
She stated instead, “My head’s gone a bit weird because it’s so hot. I had a commentary specially prepared… This song is my last song. I’m supposed to leave now… I’ll go now.”
IU then hinted to the crowd that she also had an encore song prepared by shouting as she left the stage, “I want to hear you all say encore! Encore! Encore!”
So basically, she fucked up, yet managed to salvage everything by being adorable.
So everything is cool, right? I mean, who gives a shit? It was, after all, quite cute.
Well, one commenter at allkpop (the top rated one, mind you) wasn’t having ANY of that IU shit:

Well … yeah.
1) Attractive people get away with shit ugly people don’t. Welcome to life. Bet you wouldn’t like oppar as much if he looked like Steve Buscemi, so give up the act, shitface.
2) Young people get away with shit that older people don’t. Peeing in your dad’s face while he’s changing your diaper when you’re three months old is HILARIOUS for story time later. Peeing in your dad’s face when you’re 25 will probably get you killed … or if not then you just found out your dad likes instinctual golden showers and there are far more issues to deal with here.
3) If all celebrities should be treated the same, then shouldn’t we be going in the opposite direction here? Instead of whining that the media/netizens aren’t fucking blasting IU like they do to other idols who fuck up, why not … hell I don’t know … NOT GIVE A FUCK WHEN OTHER IDOLS MAKE SUPERFICIAL MISTAKES TOO?!
Unless it’s Super Junior‘s Shindong, then it’s okay.

Those kinds of comments wouldn’t even rustle a single jimmy of mine if it weren’t for the fact that the stuff you pointed out is damn obvious. Plus, the whole “Nation’s Little Sister” and “The Aesir’s Finest’s Future Wife” titles both show how favored she is in SK.
Frankly, I’m baffled as to why people can’t seem to make simple connections like this and talent not having a direct causal relationship with success.

I probably mentioned this before, but IU is one of the idols I truly respect. Simply because she tries to connect with her audiences and explain her actual situations (the heat) with her fans. I see her more as a cute comedian/friend than anything.
That comment on AKP made me think of Hannah Montana’s ‘Nobody’s Perfect’. I know. WHY?
And I am SO glad she can speak Japanese. I mean, learn the damn language before going to promote wherever it is you’re promoting. Usually, idols just read a script written for them and it sounds ‘scripted’ for the lack of better words. It’s better to fully understand the language and express yourself in it.
All in all, she handles mistakes pretty well. Plus, most of the time I don’t see her physical appeal, I just see her as a genuine person (pretty unusual I must say).
I’m not really sure how well she knows Japanese. Kinda surprised she could improvise.

She’s actually pretty good in Japanese. Maybe not 100% fluent, but she can carry a basic conversation well. I’ve seen her on a few Japanese shows and she does fine without a translator, although she does stutter at times.
Well, she messes up in Korean too, so I think it’s just her.

I noticed forever ago when IU said a name wrong it called her mistake cute. But a member of KARA had done like the same thing a week before and was getting flamed for it. And the article was like “Hara angers netizens” or some shit, not like “Hara is adorable at failure”.

Ugh I really fuckin’ love that allkpop comment. A lot allkpop fanbitches are hypocrites. If some random person like a some random Kpop fan made a mistake with a super junior song or one of their names, kpop fans would go ape shit bat shit crazy.
I went to the Fang Da Tong and Fiona Sit “Awesome Concert” two years ago, and Fang Da Tong forgot a very noticeable amount of lyrics to two or three of his songs. It was kind of painful to watch. But I really didn’t care in the end. I got to see him wail on guitar and jam on piano. I had already known he was an incredibly talented singer and songwriter, but I had always wanted to see his instrumental abilities, and I got more than I asked for at that concert.
Now IU here performed all her songs with no issues, right? She only forgot her commentary. So what’s the big deal? People go to artists’ concerts to see them perform, not to see them talk. I can see people being upset at an artist for failing to remember lyrics to multiple songs, but for this? Besides, hearing her trying to explain her situation with her limited Japanese was indeed adorable. Some of it made no sense, and you can see that the audience was loving it. So cute.
But those K-Pop fans over at allkpop are about as rational or reasonable as religious fundamentalists, so…
For some reason I used to dislike IU – I was never into the cutesy bitches. Until I actually paid attention to her and realized she is naturally cute.
