Female idol fans becoming like male idol fans in Japan, which is not a fucking positive thing

In a recent report by the show ZIP, the rise of the female wota (idol otaku) was explored.

For whatever reason, a lot of people were glad this phenomenon is happening.

So basically, people would have you believe that female fans in Japan becoming just as dedicated to female idols as their male counterparts is a positive thing. But why? Because the stereotype is that female idols only sell because they are popular with male perverts, and now that female fans are becoming just as insane, it gives the idols credibility in the sense that it’s not just a bunch of dudes jacking off to them.

While it IS indeed sort of gratifying to be able to throw this in the face of every pseudo-analyst of J-pop who chalks up girl group success to perverted dudes (because no other girl groups besides Japanese ones do this, OBVIOUSLY), I’m never a fan of having more people becoming delusionally brainwashed.

After all, wotas are amusing from afar because they are fucking insane … but at the end of the day, they are still insane, and we shouldn’t be celebrating that.

  1. Oh, I was thinking they’d be too into it and ignore the opposite sex or something lol

  2. momoclo + momoclo fans

    Weird + Weirder

  3. Another Account

All I know is tried showing an AKB48 video in my Japanese class once and my 4’10 90lbs teacher knocked my 5’7 125lbs across the room just to shut that ish down. She was not going to let me show that video AT.ALL.

  4. So basically diehard BJs.

  5. A little crazy is ok, funny even, but constantly growing amount of crazy is fucking scary.

  6. My friends obviously do not accurately represent the entire population of idol fans, but I seem to know/meet more females who like SNSD, Perfume, Morning Musume, etc. So this doesn’t seem odd at all to me. But, again, I have no idea what the actual gender ratio is, and I wouldn’t be surprised if there are far more males.

      I agree
most of my female friends like SNSD perfume…etc.
and my male friends -surprisingly- like boy bands more than girl groups…the thing is when it comes to girl groups they always like a specific member or two and neglect the rest of them.
As for boy bands -mostly SHINee- they like them as a whole.
But then again it’s just my small community not the whole Kpop fandom.

      • Internationally, I honestly think the audience is like 65% female, 10% gay men, and 25% straight men.

        Feels that way.

    • Most of the population on international K-pop/J-pop sites are females, so that only makes sense.

Dunno where all the guys hide, honestly. Because if you look in the crowds, there are a TON of guys.

      • I feel like sharing this will contribute nothing to the conversation, but… That reminded me of the MBC “Korean Music Wave in Google” concert. There were TONS of guys in the audience. And they were going nuts. When SNSD was performing “Gee”, there was one guy who did the entire dance along with them, and he did it even better than they did.
Those dedicated male fans are just less likely than females to express themselves on the Internet, then?

        • I honestly couldn’t tell you.

I have no idea why it is. Do an investigation.

          :o

        • Naw, I’ll pretend I didn’t write such a dumb comment and just go listen to real music (e.g. Shiina Ringo) instead.

  7. You think this will happen in Korea in the near future? Or is it too hard on gay/lesbos for that to happen?

PS: Go steal reddit’s comment formatting system.

    • I enjoy making it hard to comment though. Last thing I want is comment spam and I’d rather people think about what they’re saying than just write a bunch of shit.

Same with why I require registration. If you’re going to say something, then expend the effort to register.

    • It has already happened in Korea, btw.

  8. I am sure that’s how all underage kpop fangirls are as well – so what’s so shocking? :o

I’d turn into a crazy bitch for some idols (Taemin) as well… just before I cut his nuts off to keep them in a heartshaped glass vessel until the day I die.

Btw, have you seen this documentary?: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8tyEsOtV0FY
I find it pretty cool that a CEO is as honest as him, actually admitting the shithole he puts the idols through

  9. AKB fans actually look normal which…I guess is good..
    Momoclo fangirls..are basically wotas…O_O

    • I honestly have no idea where the fuck Momoiro Clover Z came the fuck out of when I saw them charting.

I was like, “What the fuck? They are this popular?”

      Now I know.

    • It’s not surprise. AKB is more mainstream than momoclo, so the casual/normal AKB fangirls outweigh the full on dedicated AKB fangirls.
