[Review] [Album] 2PM’s Wooyoung – “Sexy Lady”

JYP Entertainment takes a stab at expanding the solo chops of its successful boy band 2PM with this debut mini-album from member Wooyoung.

At first blush, Wooyoung is not the obvious choice for a solo debut. Though he played Jason, a main character in last year’s wildly popular teen drama “Dream High“, he lacks the level of visibility enjoyed by fellow band mates Nichkhun and Taecyeon, or the production skills of the group’s main vocalist, Junsu. Hell, he doesn’t even resemble any famous artists (unlike member Junho, who’s been noted for his striking resemblance to former JYPE artist, Rain). However, his strong dancing skills, diligent work ethic, and passable vocal ability were enough for JYP to vet him as the best candidate for 2PM’s first solo debut. And so we have it, 2PM’s first solo effort, in the form of ”23, Male, Single“, whose prosaic title reads like a bare-bones e-harmony profile (and what is it with K-pop artists these days emphasizing their relationship status in their track titles?).

With the title track, “Sexy Lady“, the mini-album rounds out to a generous seven tracks (most mini-albums have three songs) that covers most of the bases, including a slow R&B number composed by fellow member Junho (“Be With You“), and a dance/pop number that features an appearance by Junsu (“DJ Got Me Goin’ Crazy“). It’s a solid collection of songs, but ultimately, “23, Male, Single” doesn’t offer any compelling reasons to be excited for 2PM’s solo debuts.

The title track, “Sexy Lady”, despite building up hype with a series of eye-catching teasers, stays cautiously close to the group’s 2011 summer hit single, “Hands Up“, borrowing not only the club concept, but also the structure of the song. It begins promisingly with an earworm of a hook, but fails to deliver a satisfying chorus, instead relying on the same 8-bar loop to carry the song (which inspired me to do this). If anything, this release makes clear that 2PM is a group whose sum is greater than its parts, as its members shine best when together (for opposing examples, look no further than the solo success of Big Bang‘s G-Dragon). But that’s ok. Most six-member idol groups aren’t designed to breed six successful solo artists, anyway.

So which songs on “23, Male, Single” are worth your time?  Check out the track-by-track breakdown below.

1. 2NITE (Produced By Deez)

A laid back jam from Wooyoung, who clearly tries to channel his mentor’s R&B charisma in this Motown-esque number. Things begin to develop melodically a little to late, however, preventing it from reaching the funk-filled heights of J. Y. Park’s finer works.

2. Sexy Lady (Produced By JYP)

A promising synthline hook characterizes the intro of this unadorned dance-pop single, and it draws you in, only to disappoint when the chorus proves to be no more than a toothless rehash of the introduction (so I tried to make it better here). It has the trappings of a K-pop hit, with an easy-to-follow dance and a solid hook, but fails to live up to its potential. Overall an unremarkable lead single, and a particularly bad choice during the competitive summer comeback season.

3. DJ Got Me Goin’ Crazy (feat. Jun. K) (Produced By 143v)

A more club-friendly track that’s still watered down heavily. Also hampered by some questionable lyrics along the lines of “Magic…”.

4. Be With You (Produced By Junho Of 2PM) *Recommended

Down-tempo R&B that tries to position itself as a cross between a pop song and a veritable babymaker (see examples here from a forum on, of all places, Yelp), and does a fairly good job at both. The moodiness and the strings could make this song an easy fit on the OST of a drama, too.

5. Falling Down (Produced By Lee Woo Min & Hong Ji Sang) *Recommended

The more upbeat cousin of “Be With You”, this song is easy-listening fodder. A piano-driven intro gets some crucial momentum from a nice bass guitar, and strings fill out the high end nicely. A classic K-ballad, tweaked for 2012.

6. 시작도 없던 것처럼 (Could Not Even Start) (Produced By Lee Woo Min & Hong Ji Sang) *Recommended

A pure K-pop song, from the instruments (electronic synths + piano) to its chord progression. Sounds like something Boyfriend or B1A4 would release, and it sticks out on this album.

7. Only Girl (Produced By Noday & Park Ji Ho) *Recommended

A Rhodes-style piano is the only backing for this stripped-back, but lovely ballad, leaving plenty of room to showcase Wooyoung’s decent vocals.  K-indie fans might find the minimalistic, warm production of “Only Girl” a possible nod to Nell‘s latest album, the critically acclaimed “Slip Away“.

  1. Didn’t Junsu come out with a solo album? I don’t see how this is any different.

    • i believe he only released a digital single that JYP epicly failed to promote. Yet, i will still listen to a track recording of Junsu’s coughing over wooyoung’s terrible sing-song voice anyday.

      • amen to that/cosign. Junsu’s song “Alive” was so much more creative and exciting. It’s a shame it was only performed on tour. A complete waste of a song.

      • Ahhh…poor Junsu :/ He deserves a proper solo debut at this point.

  2. fans commented “this song could chart in America” Yes,this song can chart in America and peak at #999 rank….this song and Wooyoung voice are mediocre actually :|

    • Yes. Can’t stand him.

K-pop supremacists are funny. Your oppa’s voice is not THAT amazing. Get over yourself.

  3. i’m still annoyed by how bad he sounded during his live performance. he barely sang half the song and when he did sing it was bad. and the song gets annoying after awhile. i’ll listen to the tracks you recommended but i definitely still think junsu should’ve gotten the solo album and promotions first (i guess he didn’t because wooyoung’s more popular).

    • I agree. Junsu’s song “Alive” slays the life out of “Sexy Lady” and to JYPE’s everlasting shame they refused to promote it properly. what bs. that song was better/more creative than anything 2pm has promoted, ever.

      • exactly. the song didn’t even get a proper music video! i think if he got a proper solo debut, it could actually be good. and he can sing well enough to actually perform properly live. i think JYPE sometimes makes questionable decisions in general.

    • i dont give a fucks

if a have to be honest. Junsu is the only one in 2pm. that can hold a steady note, for more than 2 sec.

  4. I thought Jo Kwon’s debut was much more solid

  5. I still can’t over the fact that Junsu’s awesomeness wasn’t promoted, but this randomness is being rubbed on our faces. JYP is the next KKS, fails, fails averywhere

  6. I honestly expected a lower score. I don’t know what it is with JYP idols. On variety shows, they’re extremely entertaining and have a lot of talent. However when they’re on stage, they’re so tense and flat, they need to learn to let go. JYP artists seriously have a lot of potential but they don’t show it.

  7. So far I’ve only listened to Sexy Lady and I’m actually a fan of the song though I must admit, I can’t watch the MV…
Woo-young has this flower boy face and he trying to pick up girls like some stud makes me burst out in laughter to be honest…

  8. I disliked the whole album.

It was so bad. Wooyoung being a try-hard in that ‘Sexy Lady’ video is extremely hilarious. (What is the need of having an expensive car and sitting in it like a ‘boss’, but it’s not even moving? What’s the joke here?)

And yes, what is up with idols promoting their availability in relationships? Is that a way of saying: “Our contract is almost over, should we date?” or something?

Jokwon did his thing better than Wooyoung did. Along with those heels.

    • I was thinking the same thing while watching the video. I was watching the video thinking wth is he trying to do. I really don’t like that head thing they do.

  9. Korean Usher needs to have several seats. Especially with the ‘Sexy Lady’ video, gurl please. I did like ‘Falling Down’ tho, it was alright.

  10. Well… at least he is not using “bingo” in his damn lyrics – so it has to be at least better than SuJu’s Sexy, Free & Single clusterfuck.

Did I mention that I find platinum blonde extremely weird on asian guys? (Yes, even on Taemin – but I tend to ignore it because I want his penis) So what kind of drug do I need to smoke in order to agree on a hairstyle like that?

    Oh, btw:
@TESTAMENTVM: If you’re the chick in your avatar, please have naughty sex with me. We could also walk down the beach watching the sunset, drink pink cocktails decorated with small umbrellas, ride on some dolphins and find some mermaids to rape.

    • I know what you mean about the hair. I can never get into it. It just makes them look to weird to me.

    • I like your idea of a date, though I personally prefer merman(men?).

  11. I didn’t listen to the other songs yet but the beat to this song is catchy but his singing is somewhat annoying. The dancing was alright nothing too out there but simple moves put together. The only thing I didn’t like was the head movement dance… don’t know why it just annoys me. Style wise I didn’t like the image they have of Wooyoung for this video. It may be the hair I really don’t think it suits him.

Honestly looking at each individually (minus Junsu) I don’t think they are talented enough to have good solo albums. I don’t believe the “rappers” of the group can hold themselves up without a group to back them up. And the rest of them aren’t that good of singers. But hey there are idols who can’t sing or rap that do good because the fans will buy anything they put out. But overall I feel 2pm is better as a group rather then solo (minus Junsu tho I think he can make it solo if only they give him the attention but then is he even popular among fans).
