What I do like is the silence of YGE and the group itself. The government cares because of the pride of nations and hegemony. They want to jockey for position against others. There’s also another huge reason that is just as if not more important: an external enemy to hate will unify nations politically and make the people who decry the foreign enemy the loudest and most violently the most popular. That’s why the governments are telling people that these islands belong to them and willing to engage in brinksmanship. They don’t necessarily want a war – they want their people to really fucking hate the other guys so that the people will like them.
Socially, the reason the public cares, is because fuck those dirty foreigners taking what is ours. They’re the enemy. We need to kill them to defend ourselves.
The rocks themselves don’t have much value to anyone involved. They’re just an excuse, a symbol to rally around.

But you’re missing something big. The fact that they can take advantage of it and make it have such an impact means that it’s already really big. The islands themselves are important to the national psyche and it represents the separation they have with the Japanese. Say what you will, but you make it sound as if the territorial problems wouldn’t be an issue if the government didn’t take notice of it.

You people are just as delusional as I am. Not every territorial dispute is an excuse for some other issue. You’re connecting imaginary dots. Governments largely use the islands in order to unite the country and alleviate scrutiny towards the actions of the politicians, not avoid social issues. There’s a stark difference between the two. Everybody knows full well that there are social issues and Korea has been tackling bullying a lot harder these days, but they don’t use the islands to avoid it. No, it’s the political parties that use it in order to avoid media from reporting too much on the corruption that exists.
So to make one great big conclusion, not everything is an excuse for avoiding a social or economic issue. The islands, including the Falkland islands, are issues that can stand alone AND are largely used to unite a nation or a play in the international political scene, not necessarily used to sway the people in its own nation.
