G-Dragon releases "THAT XX" music video featuring his vocals, but I'm not impressed

So I saw this “THAT XX” music video being hyped, and not by people I would consider G-Dragon stans, so it got me curious. People were saying that his vocals on the track were tight … but it sounds quite bad to me, like how Ken Hirai would sound if he couldn’t sing for shit and wasn’t the ballerest homosexual Asian celebrity.

Inevitably there will be people saying that it was the deep, meaningful lyrical content that made it “beautiful” or whatever, but the theme of this song is rather common, no? Angsty guy likes pretty girl but pretty girl is dating player guy, angsty guy in friend zone with pretty girl and won’t tell her that player guy is pounding pussy behind her back on the regular, angsty guy raps asking why pretty girl can’t breakup with player guy and date him instead. Sound standard?

He has done more complex stuff before, so I’m guessing most of the hype around this is just because G-Dragon actually attempts to sing. Since I wasn’t impressed with that, I assume that’s why my opinion differs from others.

Yes, I’ll review his other music video. Yes, it’s late. Yes, I’m busy.

  1. I actually enjoyed it. Maybe it’s due to his raw voice. Nothing special that’s been covered with auto-tune etc, just G-dragon himself, so it was a breathe of fresh air you could say.
It’s quite funny, my brother hates GD’s and CL’s voice, who are both leaders in YG.
He says they both sound “nasal” with weird pitches, so I’m guessing it’s quite subjective.

  2. I hate the song, the voice and the guy.

  3. I wasn’t that impressed with his voice. It wasn’t bad – I’ve heard worst – but it just wasn’t good either. And the song itself didn’t move me at all. Maybe I was just expecting too much from the hype that it’s getting.

  4. Disappointed with both of his MVs. :| Especially this one though. I never thought he’d release something that I could call “boring”.

  5. Nasal voice aside, I actually quite like the song. I suppose it’s the simplicity of it that grabbed my attention. The beeps are unnecessary though.

Another reason is probably because he’s mostly singing – something that I don’t hear every day.

  6. I wasnt a fan of the song or video this time. And I like G Dragon. I actually liked one of a kind better than this. But that’s just my opinion.

  7. the bleeps are annoying.

  8. FUCK HIM AND HIS SHIT.

I hated his voice, but the sound of the guitar is just too beautiful to hate it.

      This!

It’s probably why people are giving it praise as acoustic really is a nice sound and a novelty for idols these days.

  10. I don’t think his singing was bad in the sense he was off-tune or anything, but I just hate how he does all that nasally stuff. :/ He should just rap.

I actually really like One Of a Kind though, not the MV, but I like the song a lot. And That XX in theory, isn’t actually terrible, so I’m looking forward to his other stuff.

  11. He just sounded flat throughout the whole thing. I rather to sit through Katy Perry’s throat singing ass than to listen this high-pitch nasal shit.

  12. i share a similar experience. not so into kpop idol sh*t for a while, and then there’s a few i would not consider as stan (aka sane-enough – to some extent – general fan) saying something like ‘truly amazing’, ‘very impressed’ or whatever along that line about some kpop new releases. took my time to listen, and then i was like: heck, either my ‘i’m impressed’ is different to others in terms of vocal or musical ability, or kpop idols simply brainwash the concept of ‘musical talent’ in kpop fans’ eyes.
… or kpop normally is just too much for fapping that when there’s a ‘vocal feature’ that is rare enough, then it’s automatically translated to ‘i’m impressed with kpop talent’.

  13. Nothing like GD&TOP so I barely gave it a second thought.

Fan girls are just hyping cause pasta hair is supposed to be the hottest thing ever. Still don’t get the appeal of a pop star that takes himself way too seriously.

GD&TOP album was so right. It even bitch slap GDs solo album prior.
GD is one smuck lil cunt. He is so fucking naive to his own genre of music. But could you blame him? Anything that mildly seem differ that GD does is just genius to VIPs.
How many times have you heard a song like this in kpop? Its a fucking cliche and he just got an all-kill for doing something that every other kpop star. Who came before and well after will do.
Overall his music is average not anything special. But his singing is god awful. Just stick to rapping and learn to do more with that genre. Instead of looking like a fucking stereotypical wannabe cholos bret michael in drag.

      • Keep trying to say that out there, and every VIP calls me a hater. They tell me if I don’t like his music then I don’t have to listen to it and speak negative things about him…. WTF?!?!?!??!!?

Like seriously, I try to stay normal about my opinions about GD, but these VIP..I just can’t

I dont know what to say to them next time

      • Glad we all agree that GD&TOP was on point.

  14. I See Seashells on the Seashore

    Garbage.

  15. the music was GORGEOUS but his voice kind of ruins it for me.
    :(

    • Indeed. I would like to hear a Daesung cover of this song.

      • regina_filange

anyone in the group but him, tbh

      • i actually think TOP or Seungri’s voice would be more fitting.
But dae would work, I just don’t know if he’d be able to tone his voice down enough.

        • yikes not seungri’s, his voice is just as nasually as gd’s

        • I love TOP, but his Barry White voice wouldn’t fit the song either. I also think Dae would be good or even Tae-douche

        • I think Daesung would fit very well, his voice is more versatile than what BigBang songs let us hear. He manages to mold his voice according to the instrumental and the lyrics perfectly, each of his solos being amazing.

@LakornDiva no, definitely not Taeyang, his voice is too r’n'b for this song, and honestly, he can’t sing otherwise.

        • Yea, you know Daesung would be the best choice.

btw taeyang’s voice is nasally as shit that’s why I didn’t like GD in this song because GD’s voice is nasally so taeyang would NOT work.

but top has a sort of husky voice that I like, I felt like it would sound nice here.
umm but yea dae or top would be the best fits here imo.

    • Yes. The composition was lovely, then BAM! his voice.

  16. Not all that impressed. I was hoping for a Heartbreaker type thing. Not sure if he can get at that level again

  17. I actually loved the song. His voice wasn’t THAT bad. I think it’s improved considerably since his debut and last solo album.

I would say that this song is standard and doesn’t focus on the unconventional topic, so the lyrics are predictable but I still enjoyed the MV. I don’t think you need to write about how elephants are the secret to everlasting wisdom to sound deep or whatever

  18. Song and vid wasn’t that bad…. but I wasn’t impressed either. Altho, honestly, I haven’t been impressed with much coming out of YG for sum time now (sucks, I used to like them).

OT: has anyone seen the shit going on over at TigerJK’s other twitter? I guess him and VIP’s have been going back and forth over this vid/song and him saying it’s a rip off of Marvin’s room and such.

  19. I like the song.

I can imagine listening to this while calmly fileting some fan girl or taking a relaxing bath filled with Taemin’s jizz that I was collecting for a year.

Also liked one of a kind (even though he really looks hilarious). Never really payed attention to GD and the hype, though, so I guess I’m not that critical.

  20. Also this MV stars pedo GD with 16 year old Jennie Kim

    • pedo? please, she is not 10 years old.

    • an eight year age difference is not pedophilia at the ages they are at.

      • in my country, she can go to get married at the age of 16, with parental and court of guardians consents

        • Don’t be offended. It was an exaggeration.

Her face is young and it distracted me in the video next to GD. She looked more like a little sister than a lover

  21. I liked the music video, but I don’t like the song at all…his voice is too high. It seems like GD tries to go all Maxwell on us or like Justin Timberlake sings sometimes but fails like when he sang BIGBANG’s “Cafe”. I think he can sing exceptionally if he sung in a lower pitch, the way he is trying to sing since the “tonight” era is out of his voice range. I’ve heard GD sing better than this in their eariler days, like with BIGBANG’s “lalala”. I just really don’t like this type of singing from him and I’m an actual GD stan and I usually like most of the things he does.

  22. @bb2> oh yes, and that. How can we forget about a 24 year old man getting away with putting a 16 year old girl in a vid as his romantic lead…yet for some reason, not a big deal. Hmm, oh well

    • “PEDO-DRAGON APPROVES OF THIS MUSIC VIDEO!”

Yeah I kept thinking the girl looks like his little sister and he’s going to molest her. Awkward….

    • 16 isn’t a big deal to me, honestly.

That’s like, what? A high school junior? Please, we all knew what was happening at that point.

  23. I was really looking forward to this, and curious about why GD rated it R. I thought it was gonna be something bad ass, but then I heard it and was like nope, just gae saeki… Really? =.=”

Plus those beeps in the mv bug the hell out of me. :|

  24. I liked the makeup for the video, like the textures of everything. Same reason I liked the 2ne1 I love you mv. Everything else was just meh

  25. I actually liked the song. The video was much better than One of A Kind. I like the simplicity of it overall.

  26. I like the music , hate the voice and the annoying beep.

  27. The music, the melody is pretty good.
I always disliked GD’s singing voice and Seungri’s voice too, too nasal for more softcore songs…
Wasn’t impressed for both of his prereleases.

  28. The composition was really good (I’m a sucker for acoustics), but there’s just something about his singing voice that irks me. His rapping has me dying about laughing so it’s already bad. The bleeps were annoying.

Though GD likes to prove himself through his works (that I mostly dislike, except Heartbreaker…maybe), I kind of respect for doing what he wants freely.

    Meh.

  29. korean branch of reddit nice guys ™ now have an anthem.

  30. The beat is good but his singing voice in this song is annoying. Sounds to scratchy to me. Not really impressed with this song. Average video and bad singing voice.

  31. I really like this song, but GD’s vocals are definitely no good technically. I can barely get through this song without my voice going hoarse. It’s similar to how Adele had to save Rolling in the Deep till the end of her shows because it would blow her voice out. Nice to see skin without BB cream though lol.

Also yes GD&TOP = that good ish
