Dear K-Pop Companies, Please Watch Jolin Tsai's MV For "The Great Artist"

Has anyone seen Jolin Tsai‘s new MV for “The Great Artist“?

I know I’m two months late to this, but it doesn’t hurt to reiterate what I’m assuming has been on the mind of everyone who’s seen this MV and is familiar with K-pop — Why the hell did SM buy those matrix cameras again?

I ask because I haven’t seen a MV of this caliber out of SM Entertainment, culture technology or no. Yes, I admit, Jolin was dancing in a box just like SM’s finest by the end of those four minutes, but the first three minutes was a special effects extravaganza, the kind of which I’ve rarely seen in K-pop (the main exception being Yoon Mi Rae‘s MV for “Get It In).

Now before you depart off into the interwebs thinking I’m an SM hater, I’ll say two things in defense of SM.

First of all, that culture technology stuff (sort of) works. I took CT with a grain of salt, given my (apparently quaint and outdated) sentiments that music is an art, but the emphasis on the importance of camera angles was spot on. While watching the video, I couldn’t help but notice how … not long … Jolin’s limbs were. SM, you’ve trained my eyes to expect golden proportioned limbs through the use of deceiving camera angles! Curse you and your team of optical illusion experts! Secondly, Jolin is no BoA when it comes to dancing. Hell, she’s no Sulli. Her dance moves looked awkward, jerky, and sometimes unpleasant to look at. Again, I blame SM for spoiling my eyes with years of perfectly in-sync choreography.

But getting off the SME train here, the costumes were also of note, as they gave YG Entertainment a run for their money. The steampunk-meets-TRON aesthetic, implanted in the Absolut Vodka-sponsored universe of Swedish House Mafia‘s “Greyhound worked strangely well.

And the Western extras? Despite K-pop’s (and maybe this could be a general quality that applies to Asian pop music as a category) annoying penchant for the completely gratuitous use of white (usually female) extras — my pet peeve — in this MV, it worked, and the MV was better for it.

As a bonus, the masquerade ball theme reminded me of everything SHINee‘s Japanese PV for “Juliette” could have been. The Lego glasses were cool and all, but Jolin has you roundly beat, boys.

Quite frankly, it’s shocking how little K-pop music videos have changed in the past few years, even though CGI and live-motion graphics technology has improved by leaps and bounds.

For all the hoopla over how K-pop is becoming “Asian pop”, there are some glaring qualifications that need to be addressed before any of The Big Three can start giving themselves accolades for being so ubiquitous in Asia. Like the quality of MVs — as clearly there are others in Asia (let alone the world) that can do a better job.

Stagnation is never a good look.

  1. How much did it cost to make it though? Or is it the fact
“If Jolin can make it like this, so can the big 3?”

    • well it’s more like ‘If you can’t even keep up with the best mvs in other asian nations then just shut up’

    • I’ve been supremely disappointed with SM Entertainment’s music videos of late.

That stupid fucking camera they bought is only being used to make their shit look cheesy.

      • I realised it’s the cheap aesthetic that pleases the fans.
Today, I was talking with my friends from Asia who listen to Kpop because they came to Australia.
They’re a fan of SM artists and I wondered why. It then hit me, they never said
“I like them because of their music”
        No, they implied
“I like them because they’re attractive and they appear on every single Korean entertainment, whether it be interviews, talent shows, entertainment shows etc”
Which made me jealous because I’m a fan of YG and JYP, who put more effort into their work than SM but SM are destroying the competition. I mean f(x) are beating 2ne1 and Wonder Girls for “Best Global Act” when they haven’t even promoted overseas.
So SM fans are pretty much the core of delusional fans who are mostly sheep following success. If 2ne1 or Wonder Girls suddenly dominate the US market, their fan base will grow exponentially, not because of their success but kpop fans just migrate to who’s the most popular right now.

SM pretty much knows their fans will buy anything, and I mean anything. So they become lazy which pretty much explains the disappointing MV’s etc

        • pretty much if the sm artists were to get into a situation where they’re faces got mess up and horrid looking, all of their fans, even the most loyal, would shift over to supporting some other bands

but i guess that’s the most of kpop

and wth with fail(x) getting that? maybe just sones supporting them. i pretty much only seem them on fail(x)’s videos to support snsd’s sister band

  2. I want every costume from that mv in my closet damn it!

  3. Jolin is flawless. Period.

  4. Some guy showed this to me on Gaia a while back.
Jolin Tsai Is one of the prettiest asian women in the industry. She reminds me of BoA.

    • I also cant help but compare her to BoA. While BoA blows her out of the water with dancing (though Jolin has learned some pretty sick moves including pole dancing), Jolin is the better singer by far

  5. Kpop is not advancing, because of GREED.
The companies are in it to suck as much money as they can as quickly as they can. This is not to say other music industries don’t care about money. But, it seems Kpop executives don’t believe in the long term value of their product and know their current model, the idol system is a house of cards that will tumble down soon. With such a mind frame, it’s no surprise that they do not care about investing in actual talent, good songs, good MVs and are comfortable just feeding the fan cults, the same watered down soup release after release.

The stagnation and the beating to death of every new music fad, is what will kill the genre even faster.

    • Stagnation won’t kill Korean music as a whole, just the current pop scene. The throwaways (75-95% of the idol bubble) will be the ones to suffer the most. Idols with the highest shot to survive are groups like B.A.P, Big Bang, Block B, Brown Eyed Girls, BoA, Busker Busker, SHINee (I hope), JYJ/TVX2, Se7en, Epik High, PSY, etc. Basically: if you’re more than a pretty face and so-so voice, have a little bit of writing/composing/producing talent, maybe a bit of acting/modeling talent and you don’t rely on music as your only bread and butter, you’ll be fine.

The same thing happened in the 90s and early 2000s. The bubble during those days (Shinhwa, S.E.S, Milk, SWI.T, Baby VOX, G.O.D, H.O.T, Fink.L yadda yadda yadda) fizzled out for soloists to take over and the ones who still have anything going on moved onto other avenues (Y.E.H’s acting, Hyori’s a soloist, Shinhwa’s back and on their own terms, Bada’s a solist as well). This is no different; just a bigger bubble to pop. The same thing will happen again in another decade. It happens with all music scenes when the current formula becomes stale and over saturated. Maybe this time instead of just soloists, the new “pop” scene will be indie?

  6. Yeah the Taiwanese entertainment scene seems to really be rising, in my opinon.
I also enjoyed http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6htyfxPkYDU from Angela Chang :o

    • I think so too. Hopefully Mando and Canto pop will start getting more international recognition as well as other genres in the continent.

      • I think it will. I just read a few articles (and SM also said it themselves) that China is going to be the worlds biggest entertainment market in 5-10 years. I think SM even said China is going to overtake Hollywood.

It seemed kind of random, so I was gonna ask IATB or someone why or how ~ but yeah.

        • *IATFB lol

        • SM need to stop drinking that fantasy-ade.

        • China is going to overtake Hollywood??

          Lol I doubt it

        • sources?

Anything coming out of SM is propaganda bs. No way could China dethrone Hollywood in just 5-10 years. China is so saturated that it would basically cave in on itself.

Of course Taiwanese entertainment is getting better(opinions), but so is almost all the other asian countries entertainment, time has shown us again and again that in most cases it would/should be better(japan, korea?). Having the nations entertainment become a trend like k-pop however depends on each individuals personal opinion and when that positive attitude gets turned into a large group it then becomes a trend.

Regarding China, with its 1.4 billion population, being the biggest entertainment market in 5-10 years might be possible… but only within China. I don’t think they can have as much global impact on the entertainment industry internationally as Hollywood has, likewise with technological advancements. They have done nothing/little(yet) to contribute world wide. Again, it would be impossible for China for global domination in such a short time as a decade as no first world country respects them, the thing China holds oh so dearly.. “respect”.

        • Lee Soo Man said the whole ‘China is going to overtake Hollywood’ thing when he was debuting Exo-M.

And the other was this article http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2012/10/08/121008fa_fact_seabrook?currentPage=5

          where it says : ”

(Max Hole, an executive at Universal’s international division)

Like everyone else in the record industry, Hole wants to do business in China, which one day will be the world’s biggest market. The question is when that will be. When I asked Hole, he said, “China is obviously a huge opportunity for us in five to ten years’ time.” He added, “Right now, the market is so small, but we make money on endorsements and touring.” Collaborating with S.M. on a U.S. record for Girls could lead to other collaborations in China, where S.M. is better connected than Universal. “

  7. This reminds me of how I first felt when I watched Will Pan’s song, for which I can’t think of a good English title. I

t’s not as high concept as Jolin’s video, but an awesome concept and dancing, a pretty sick beat, and a manlier man than I can find anywhere in K-pop made me think: “Oh, there’s more than just K/J-pop in Asia!”

  8. I See Seashells on the Seashore

Great visuals and a cool tune with an uplifting feel to it. Can’t complain about the vocals either.

  9. Why would they spend money on great MV’s when they can just make a slideshow and gain millions?

  10. I’m officially a fan of Jolin. Loved ‘Dr. Jolin” and her whole “Muse” album is awesome!

  11. Jolin Tsai is terrible.

  12. I’ll have to hear this later. I feel bad because I was almost corrupted by intl Ayu fans that Jolin Tsaiwas an Ayu wanna be (back when I got into Ayu in 03-04) and then… I just kinda… forgot about her ^^; (I wasn’t one of those people who hated artists who tried to copy my best because um… c’mon Ayu is influenced by so many lol but I was like meh for Jolin Tsai… and never really got into C-pop/Chinese music) But yeah… Um…. The Big Three still don’t have anything on avex and until they can be on the top world list of most expensive video and artists at least in the top 200 of the best selling artist of all time… they just need to have a seat.

  13. This MV had great aesthetics and was filmed really well, but from the few popular Asian (non-Korean pop) music videos I’ve seen, I have to disagree about Korea not having the highest quality music videos in Asia. Sure SM are lazy as heck which is luckily made up for by the strength of their talent but a lot of smaller companies (shout out to TS) are doing a lot with not nearly the same amount of resources, and that’s a good thing.

YG MVs for the most part are all really good, especially Big Bang’s. JYP also have a few decent ones here and there. Hands Up was particularly good I think.

I’ll say again, the aesthetics of this MV were awesome. If K-Pop companies can take anything from this is that creating a vibrant world in your MV can be really effective. The costumes and set design were just spot on, despite only being an MV I did feel like she was singing and dancing in a retro-futuristic world rather than a box on some sound stage.

SNSD are one of the few really popular groups that get distinct themes on a regular basis (minus The Boys). If more groups did that, it’d do K-Pop some good.

    • On a music video-to-music video basis, K-pop puts out the best quality in Asia.

I don’t think they’ve put out a really ambitious one that has pushed the limits in years though.

      I agree with her.

  14. I’d be happy if K-pop companies spent more money on producing good music than fancy music videos.

If I had to characterize this year in K-pop so far, I’d say it was the year of disappointing comebacks.

The only highlights this year were some of the promising rookie groups. Almost all of the established groups came back with half-assed efforts.

  15. Ehh nothing impressive here imo. Don’t know much about her, besides the fact that she got shitfaced with Namie in Taiwan. I can’t get into c-pop. The language is too harsh sounding imo, and it’s not pleasant to listen too. This is also the reason why I resisted k-pop for a long time too. I thought Korean sounded gross for years lmfao. Also, it’s definitely not as easy to sing along too like Japanese is.Then again, maybe it’s easier for me because Japanese pronunciation is similar to Spanish.

  16. The cinematography was perfect. You can tell they put money into this mv. The outfits were aesthetically pleasing. But I agree her dancing looks very awkward and ugly.

  17. this is the most excited i’ve been about an asianjunkie in a while. i’ve been fangirling over Jolin for months with no one to talk to, and then this.

    Marissa Pak, you’re my hero
