Much to the dismay of just about everybody, including their own fans, SNSD‘s newest Japanese single was a remake of an almost three-year-old Korean song in “Oh!“.
In what might be seen as hopeful news, at least if it discourages companies from regurgitating old bullshit, the release bombed by their standards.
While it charted at #1 on the Oricon physical chart, it sold a paltry 66k units. Worse yet, it peaked at #4 on the Recochoku digital chart. For them, that’s … uh … not so good.
The only joy I derive from this is that if enough of these re-releases bomb (by any Korean artist), it’ll force K-pop groups to release new material in Japan and come up with a different sound. That is, after all, far better than the alternative of being force fed songs re-recorded in a language that the music wasn’t even intended to make sense for.
I hate all these regurgitated songs that SM do for japanese albums. wtf happened to songs like the 1st japanese album…..
I did not like this song to begin with..
I guess companies just wanna be lazy and milk a song and group for all it’s worth without doing any actual work.

It’s so they can spend longer time making their Japanese album to be successful, while satisfying the fans at the same time.
Just a question though, are SNSD actually successful in Japan? I know they’ve had a lot of sale, sold out concerts etc but are they actual new fans from Japan or just Japan SONE’S?
Also it annoys me because other girl groups receive criticism for remaking their Korean songs into Japanese when SNSD have remade all of them and not received one criticism.

They are to fucking old for this….ugh. That look of forced aegyo was mildly unsettling to me. They need to grow as artists but that has not happened yet. This is a cash grab plain and simple. I’m glad it flopped.
I’m of the opinion that all Kpop artists when releasing Jpop singles are usually way better as they experiment in Japan due to Jpop being a lot more competitive and richer in music diversity than mainstream Kpop (AKB48 aside).

AKB do the same. This year they did the band thing for Give Me 5 and UZA, the new single is like Tim Burton/Halloween/electropop shit. Their B-sides of this year have the Bollywood sound like Nante Bohemia and Doremi is this weird pop electro trance thing. Their stage songs that make up the bulk of their songs of over 300 songs have rockish sounds like Blue Rose and ALIVE or song about depression like I’m crying + they do the “dark” so every year to appeal to mainstream fans, River, Beginner.
The 48 tha don’t experiment much is SKE because they’re jus sticking to the typical idol pop.

It’s a weird combination of Korean and Japanese music video directing – especially the close-ups reminded me of Japanese idol MVs yet their fashion style ( well pretty much the fact they weren’t “nude” ) was very Korean.
The opening reminded me of Korean exchange students invading a the dorm room of Japanese lolitas lol
Yuri needs to be kicked out of the group though. Her voice makes me cringe, it’s annoying and disgusting =__= You could scare dogs with it.
I never liked Oh! and the B-side ALL MY LOVE IS FOR YOU was so much better. It should have been the main track in my opinion.
I still can’t believe they finally decided to release this song. It should have been put into the 1st album like “Hoot” was thankfully. Now they have no Korean songs to remake unless they go back to their 1st Korean album.
Taeyeon had this IDGAF face in the whole video. She hates the song, so having to redo it must have been hell. I wonder why the producers love having Yuri use her breathy voice for songs instead of her natural one. She can’t do it live well enough anyway. When she tries, she could be passable in her natural voice. (Ex. Japanese Mabinogi song, All I want for Christmas in 2011)

I’d say 5. Tae, Jess, Tiff, Seo, and Sunny. I don’t care with her being LSM’s niece = free pass or whatever….she has a surprisingly good voice. Maybe replaceable, but still very nice to hear.

This is why the only Korean artists who are actually respected are BoA and TVX2/JYJ/DB5K. Sure, some of their work were rehashes too (*cough* Mirotic sucked in Japanese *cough*), but at least they released stuff that wasn’t already heard in Korea first.
BTW, I hated Oh!, Gee, etc. I could do without ever hearing those songs in any language.
66k units from being 200k units is a big drop. SNSD is losing their appeal but will they bounce back? Either way they are still the top Korean female group in Japan next to Kara.
The song might have been shit, but the music video had so much eye candy that I can let it slide.
At least they don’t have any ridiculous attempts at English in this music video.

The Japanese album that came last year was pretty solid…better than the Korean ones IMHO. On a side note, heard that they all have a 7-year contract that’ll end in 2 years. I’m surprised they haven’t promoted new materials in Korea yet this year. SM getting the to cash as much as possible (since it’s Japan) before the curtain falls?

Even YG said something about that recently – noting how the idol craze seems to be a cyclical thing and how he thinks with the success of Psy and other non-idol performers recently, the industry might be shifting.
Also, the market is absolutely over-saturated with new groups (most of them were dead on arrival) and the established idol groups like SNSD are getting old (relatively speaking) and their contracts are ending soon.
But then you get some assholes like EXO and all the crazy fanhoes jump on the new bandwagon.
That fandom already seems like it consists of the craziest bitches of fandoms like ELF, Cassies and whatever the fuck there is.
At least we will get some good scandals if they try to poison them or send them their cut off clitoris drenched in pig blood in fan mail.

I like SNSD and I really enjoy that they redid this song 3 years later. Songs like “Oh!” and “Echo” may be really bubblegum-y but it’s part of who they are. And how much do you really expect for it to sell – it’s only a remake of their own song…
Honestly I’ll admit that I like less than half of the songs SNSD has ever done – but that’s still a lot of songs. The first Japanese album was by far their best. If any of you haven’t listen to it, check it out. E.g. You-aholic, Bad Girl, Great Escape, Hoot (and remakes of Genie and Run Devil Run)… I also like Beautiful Stranger, In Love with the Hero, and Let it Rain (but not sure everyone else would).
It’s okay. Especially because your avatar has Hyorin in it who has one of the best bodies of Kpop.

People have a lot of hate on this thread, so on the flip side – Who do you guys actually like? There aren’t very many solo artists… so what girl groups do you like? Are 4Minute or KARA or T-ara are better artists…?
Not that I don’t like those groups, but, really, SNSD is top tier. If you’ve ever seen their concerts you’ll know they are pros. Some other groups have some good songs but I can’t point to a better group mostly because the sample size is too small; most groups have only a handful of good songs at best. I love Sistar but I can count on one hand how many hits they have.

I do like 2NE1 alot and they are pretty original as far as Kpop goes (and the only group I’ve ever use profanity in their lyrics, which is interesting).
I like at least 6-7 girl groups. I’m no diehard SONE or even SM slave, but in my moderate amount of experience, SNSD may have 2 of the top 10 kpop female singers in the industry. (I’m sure this will bring the hate~) A quick search shows that some people tend to think that Jooyi, Lee Haeri, and others are better singers than Taeyeon (my absolute bias).
If I could make a 5 girl supergroup it would be something like (in this order): Taeyeon, Hyorin, Luna, someone to rap (Hyuna?), and maybe Eunjung? (solely because she’s cute as a button and got a body like that). That group would be really weird but would be entertaining to see how it imploded
We’re not going to hate you for difference of opinion, this isn’t allkpop. You’re safe here. I like the first three of your supergroup (i make those in my head all the time) but hyuna is better as a solo artist in my opinion. I know some guys who are underground rappers in Korea, they work with swings and others, sort of like Zico did. Some of the underground girls I’ve heard are amazing. I would try to put them in a group, though I doubt they’d want to.
My favorite is KARA. I genuinely like their music. I play bass and guitar, and I usually listen to jazz and soul music. I like KARA, though, because a lot of their music features real bass guitar (with some pretty crazy bass lines sometimes – check out “Rock U”) and chord progressions with seventh and extended chords. Totally being serious here. I have yet to hear any other K-Pop artist with as many musically interesting songs.
However, this is obviously thanks to songwriters Kim Seung-soo and Han Jae-ho. Each member’s individual talent is questionable. The original three members’ voices sound really good on their first album, “the First Bloooooming,” but I can’t say I’ve ever been impressed by any of their live performances. It’s an absolute shame that Kim Sunghee isn’t with them anymore because her voice is incredible.
I like SPICA because they can SANG. We all know this already.
I like a few SNSD songs, especially those from Taetiseo, for the same reason I like so much of KARA’s music.
Then I like BoA because she’s the OG of K-Pop, her dances are awesome, and she also has some interesting music. I especially love 「공중정원」. Amazing song.
I don’t have a problem with SNSD, usually. I like a few of the members, but the fans? Yeah, no.

I like KARA cause they are hot bitches – especially Gyuri. Couldn’t care less about their music though, cause it sucks.
For the same reason I like After School – especially Nana, Jooyeon and Lizzy. Also I loved Kahi and Bekah when they were still members – their music is alright I guess but not really great overall.
Rania has a special place in my filthy heart because Mr Feelgood will always be one of the best crotch MVs ever created. The new song sucks balls though.
