Ask Asian Junkie: Who Are Your Favorite Idol Groups?

Ask Asian Junkie is back after an extended layoff due to this thing called a life … and laziness and apathy and putting it off to catch up on shit like “Homeland“.

Fucks given? Zero.

Okay bitch, I’m doing Ask Asian Junkie. Who are your favorite groups?

MOTHERFUCKER YOU AREN’T DOING ME A FAVOR

GET IT STRAIGHT

To be frank, I hate questions like these because I can never think of them all and it puts me on the spot. To make matters worse, revealing shit like this also gives out information on myself that allows people to link back to it and say dumb shit like, “OMG YOU ONLY SAY THAT BECAUSE YOU LIKE THEM OMG BIAS“, thus ignoring any logic I’ve included in the post.

But whatever, since a lot of you have been harassing me about this, I’ll give an answer.

—–

Old Groups

S.E.S. – Yes yes, y’all, we like sex, y’all.

At least Eugene is still relevant.

Fin.K.L – Somehow, all of them ended up being hot.

They had catchy ass songs too.

Fly To The Sky – Always liked them, being straight be damned.

Don’t judge.

Jewelry – They suck now, but their previous members were awesome.

The most shocking part about them is that I remember they sounded great live.

Chun Sang Ji Hee – Criminally underrated. Will never forgive the Korean public for rendering them irrelevant.

All four were at least attractive, if not gorgeous, and their songs were catchy. They could all hold a note and they could all dance respectably.

SMAP – I don’t care about their music and the Japanese idol system is setup so that it doesn’t matter anyway. I like them because they’re hilarious on variety shows. That’s it. Also, Kimura Takuya stars in a lot of the Japanese dramas I enjoy, even if he always has to be a flawless protagonist.

Morning Musume – Not now, but before? Hell yeah. I would argue that they were more interesting in their prime than AKB48 ever could be. Zero to do with their music, everything to do with their variety shows and what not.

New Groups

TVXQ/JYJ – In their separate groups only. Blasphemy, right? But I never really liked their music prior to the split. Now though, I think both of them are great in their own way.

I doubt we see idols like this come along for a while.

KARA – Brainless but catchy music. Members are cute and interesting.

SECRET – Would be better as a trio, but still awesome as a quartet.

Girl’s Day – They don’t make great music, but who cares? They’ve had their moments with catchy songs, and though I find some of their antics annoying, they are entertaining and attractive.

Block B – I guess this is mainly Zico related, but I do like their songs, at least in comparison to the rest of the crap out there.

A Pink – Throwback group. Can’t not like them.

SPICA – They’re talented, so of course they’re irrelevant in Korea. Sweet system, bros.

EXILEATSUSHI and friends are forever relevant.

Perfume – It’s difficult for me to dislike anything they do, honestly.

Arashi – Basically for the same reasoning as SMAP. Also, Matsumoto Jun is more attractive to straight men than like 75% of women. I said it.

AKB48 – Some of their songs are actually catchy, but their looks, personas, and shows are the main draw, honestly.

E-Girls – In a just world, they would be the top idol group in Japan, and one of the best in Asia. It is not a just world.

Yeah, I know they don’t consider themselves idols, but they’re in the vicinity.

SCANDAL – Different type of music from E-Girls, but the same conclusion for me.

—–

That’s all I can think of for now.

Remember, these are only idol groups, not like actual artists.

I have nothing better to do, so send me your questions here: Ask Asian Junkie.

  1. I love these! Keep ‘em cuming! More of it, more of it!

I haven’t listened to most of those artists. Fuck me, right? Too obsessed with someone’s penis.

  2. “SECRET – Would be better as a trio, but still awesome as a quartet.”

lol So who would you kick out? xD

I agree with Arashi’s Matsujun 100%. Long before I even knew K-Pop even existed, I stanned the ish out of that man.

  3. Words can’t express my love for Arashi on variety shows but frankly since the beginning I’ve thought Matsujun’s face was fucking scary.

    praise to lord nino

  4. Now that wasn’t so damn hard was it?

I knew you couldn’t resist my charming way of asking this.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eou_etUyGP4

  6. OMG!! I freaking love you right now for mentioning CSJH!!! ;-; Most of my friends who like Kpop don’t even know who they are!! Curse you Kpop and SME for making these four, talented ladies irrelevant.

Basically if you have gorgeous voices and talent, you almost have no hope….unless your DB5K.

    My favourites are…..

    - BoA (becauses she is fucking awesome!)
-DBSK/JYJ (O’ why did thou split?)
    -CSJH
    -B.E.G
    - Big Bang
    - 2NE1
    - SHINee
-Super Junior (yes, I’ll admit…I like them .__.)
    - Miss A
    - the OLD line up of Afterschool
-KARA (more so a shameless like..)
    -Block-B
-the OLD line up of Jewelry
    -Infinite

    Jpop
    - Nana Mizuki (not so much anymore, but I used to be a huge fan of her when I was younger)
    -Namie Amuro
    -Utada Hikaru
    -Crystal Kay.

    • yeah.
You won’t get famous with only talent in Kpop now.
      2000-2007 were good times:
Seeya, BEG (before they turned into idols)…

Kpop now is : talentless girls that fail hard at singing:D:D:D

      • *sigh* tell me about it. When the likes of Ailee, SPICA, etc, came along I was weeping tears of joy.

    • Oh yeah, Crystal Kay and Infinite are good with me too. And yes, CSJH the Grace fans are a rare species.

      • The fanbase is small, but loyal (in a sense), but they’re nowhere near as crazy as Sones and other fandoms.

    • Can’t agree more with the old lines of Jewelry and After School, they were PERFECT

      • I know right? I loved Afterschool when it was just Kahi, Jung Ah, Bekah, Jooyeon, and Soyoung (they were so badassed.)

Jewelry was pretty badassed too with Seo-in young, Jung Ah (who has a gorgeous voice), Min Ah, and Ji hyun.

    • Always loved CSJH. So fucking pissed when they stopped releasing shit.

      Ugh.

    • i would include 2ne1 and big bang in my list had their recent material not sucked so bad T.T And their rappers still remain horrible…

  7. Not Seeya?
    Best Group in Kpop history:D

My first comment on this site:-)

  8. I have a question IATFB. When will or will you ever start doing selca articles?

  9. Matsumoto Jun?
Lol, you have a weird taste in men…

Anyways, have to agree with what you wrote about E-Girls.
I might be wrong since I’m not much into Japanese idol music, but from recent updates on YT somehow there seems to be a trend of actual dancing idol groups – not just the pseudo-parapara they usually do, but actual dancing.
Some of the smaller, relatively recent groups seem to have more singing talents as well…Maybe a bit of change in the industry?

My personal Korean faves would be BIGBANG, SISTAR and Lee Hyori maybe…I listen to many groups and singers but these are the ones I can enjoy almost unconditionally…
The Japanese would be Nishino Kana, Hamasaki Ayumi, Perfume, SOULJA, Gackt…

I wonder how do you feel towards SISTAR…

    • Jun was suuuper hot during the Hana Yori Dango era. Nowadays… idk, I feel like all of the Arashi members have just been looking old lately (with Nino being the obvious exception). Especially Ohno, but fully understandable because he spends all that time in the sun which ages the skin terribly.

      :3

    • DUDE WOULD BE A GOOD LOOKING CHICK

    • I like SISTAR, not enough to put in my favorites though.

As far as the J-pop industry, I do HOPE that the girl/boy groups trend more towards talent, but the fact remains that it’s far too easy to make talentless girls and boys extremely popular through promotion and cult of personality development rather than finding and crafting people with actual talent.

      • I would’ve been disappointed if you disliked SISTAR lol

Seems the younger generation idols, who make their debut lately or made it in the past 1-2 years are either more well-trained or more talented than their senpais were at their debut. Also their music seems to be more open to fads as well.

Sadly as you wrote selling people as the product is still easier. If we look at how pirating music became popular I think it’s also a benefitting tactic because even if ppl don’t buy albums, they will pay to attend fan meetings and such just to be close to their bias. The only reason I respect the people behind AKB48 is their ability to force wota to by albums and singles. I wonder how would this system work out in the West…

Btw, speaking of talent. The Korean idol industry seems to have raised the standard a slight bit as of late. At least the groups that caught the spotlight tend towards actual talent. Two of my recent finds were Phantom and Lunafly – latter has a Korean-British member who’s name is Sam Carter…You won’t get why that’s funny if you never saw Stargate SG1 though XD.

        • I love you for mentioning Phantom, they are actually really great. All the members are talented

  10. shinee is my favorite (can dance and sing and attractive not to mention a fabulous cough*gay* member = sold)
i am shameless. also, 2ne1 and big bang consistently make great songs and seem real to me so they are up there. old school wise 1tym easliy is my favorite, but lee hyori and boA will be the ultimate bad-asses of kpop

  11. What about Fairies? They’re probably too loli for you but how about when they grow up a little?

  12. OMG that FinK.L. (or Pinkle for me) song was my major jam back then lol
And YES, I can’t never forgive humanity for my four failures-as-solos-put-in-a-group CSJH being so goddamn underrated :/

I’m surprised no SNSD up there? I guess people finally realise just how dull and basic they really are *shrugs*

  13. Hm… where to start…
I guess for modern groups, I’m a fan of Big Bang and 2ne1 (They were my introduction to kpop, lollipop was the first kpop song I heard.) but I’m not going to go psycho VIP/Blackjack any time soon. (I don’t even consider myself either.)

For guy groups I love SHINee (I was pretty much a full on Key stan for a large part of last year. He’s so flamboyant.)
Super Senior is a guilty pleasure. (They basically cheer me up when I’m in a bad mood because I can laugh at their awful English.)
I really can’t stand a lot of male kpop, and I can hardly watch any male music videos because they look so feminine. I guess other than that, CN Blue and LED Apple are pretty good.

For girl groups I like almost everything. I guess I’ll list some.
Spica- those vocals. Even if I’ll be there was sugary aegeyo pop, they managed to pull it off so well. Excited for their comeback.
Chocolat- Another guilty pleasure but Melanie and Jaeyoon are awesome vocalists and they dance their asses off. One of my favorite rookie groups in 2011.
EXID- severely underrated. L.E. is possibly the best idol rapper ever (And I hate most idol rappers, and rap in general), and Every Night has the best MV I’ve seen in a while.
Sunny Hill- While Janghyun needs to get his butt back, they’re possibly my favorite group ever, they’re all talented, and their older stuff (Basically everything off of their Ringback Tone mini, You Don’t know, their 2008 is my summer mini…) was great and now their work is awesome but different, and always about something deep. I mean, Bad Boy is supposed to be about Lee Myung Bak… xD.
HAM- Ack, I don’t think these girls are going to make a comeback. They had an awful debut song with T.T Dance, and some weirdass aegeyo song after that, but So Sexy, Propose and Lower Your Sights are still awesome.
T-ara- total guilty pleasure, especially after the scandal. But Why Are You Being Like This, TTL, I’m Really Hurt, and Cry Cry are awesome.
Ailee, IU and G.Na are the only solo artists I’ve ever really cared about.

As for older kpop, I LOVE Shinhwa. I’d be a total Changjo if all the members weren’t old enough to be my dad. SeeYa was awesome, and Lee Hyori and BoA are awesome-sauce. And CSJH. I ADORE THEM. ADORE. Damn SM for wasting their talents.

    • Interesting enough about LE, she used to be called Elly and was an underground rapper (part of the Jiggy Fellaz.) Yes, she is quite good. :)

    • How old are you then, 13?)
One of my ex-boyfriends is older than Eric now… Kpop nowadays makes me feel old

    • love LE, but juni j is still my fav female idol rapper. I wish LE had more mixtapes or featurings though, there’s not enough out there for me to judge her talents as a rapper

  14. Does anyone know what happened to CSJH? Where the hell are they?

    • Sunday and Dana formed a sub-unit, but I think they’re on another hiatus and doing other projects.
Stephanie left to pursue ballet, but she recently has returned to the kpop scene with a solo debut.
Lina: I think she is focusing on her musicals and what not.

  15. I’m new to asian pop, but my favorite idol/groups so far are JYJ, BIGBANG, BoA, and Utada Hikaru. I’ve also been checking out:
    SPICA
    Brown Eyed Girls
    Miryo
    Sunny Hill
Ailee (her “Heaven” song is one of my favorites now)
    E.via
Lena Park (loved her Parallax album)
    John Park
SECRET, and a ton of others. I can’t stop listening to Tablo’s Fever’s End, it’s an amazing album.

  16. “Also, Matsumoto Jun is more attractive to straight men than like 75% of women. I said it.”
    Totally guilty of this.

  17. SMAP and ARASHI members are so fun to watch on reality shows hehe.
It’s probably what everyone else likes too, but I love watching HeyHeyHey, Domoto Kyoudai, and Utaban. Always LMAO when I watch them

  18. I haven’t been listening to kpop for too long but I like Block B, CNBlue, BEG, Spica, FT Island and Xia.
And from reading the comments it looks like I need to check out CSJH too.
I haven’t listened to any Japanese idol music other than Perfume, but i like them

  19. SES and Fin.K.L are HOT :O
Plenty of meat. Not like SNSDish stick figure.

  20. To be honest, the only idol group that I stan for is 2 member TVXQ. I hated them as 5 (JYJ being the main reason lolz).

As for solo artists, I love BoA, IU, and Younha.

Don’t get me started on J-pop though…too many to name off.

    • Really? I don’t know anybody that hated JYJ in TVXQ WHILE they were five.

      • I definitely hated them and it started with the song LAST ANGEL with Koda Kumi. I despised that song with a passion back in the day since I thought they ruined it (I was such a hater lol).

I also thought Jaejoong’s voice was annoying and Junsu and Yuchun were ugly. I was indifferent to Yunho and Changmin but I became a fan after listening to the TONE album.

    • I’m a little surprised that you hated the 3. especially when they were 5 :o

  21. milkywhituskinned

I love da Wonda Gurls, Wonder World was a p sweet ass album
I feel like they are legit, I don’t get the ”plss like me” vibe out of them.

  22. You guys are cheating and including soloists.

    :o

  23. No one here likes Baby V.O.X? They introduced me to kpop back in 2003. “Why”, “Accident” and “Doll” were some of my favorites.

I really liked S.E.S particularly “Love” and “Just in Love” but I knew of them after they broke up.

I liked SNSD a lot. In 2007-2008 they were impressive given that ITNW singing and dancing routine. They could have gotten a lot better over the years if only SME decided to have them train that way. Well it’s too late now. I still like them but much less compared to 2007-8. (Yoona and her loud but sometimes off-key singing was funny to watch. You could hear her in the chorus back then!)

    Moving on to other groups:
Secret – A well-balanced 4 member group. I don’t get all the hate on Sunhwa as she was okay even during their “Magic” days. She’s great for the supposed visuals of the group. It’s problematic though if TS Ent thinks that JiEun can be a Hyorin-like idol (she’s not). She has a very sweet tone to her voice though which I like.
SISTAR – I liked the group even in their “Push Push” days. It’s Soyu that gives the illusion that the group can all sing well. Otherwise the group would be Hyorin feat. SISTAR in terms of vocal abilities. Dasom kind of coasts along, while Bora is the “rapper” and sexy member.
Nine Muses – A pretty underrated group considering they were really hated back in 2010. My favorites are still good (Saem, Sera and Hyemi). Kyungri and Hyuna solidified the group leaving Minha kind of the only “useless” member since Euaerin switched to rapping and Eunji has a lot of presence when she’s in the front of the formation.
She’z – The group that I so desperately want to succeed out of the rookies simply because with the right songs they can go far due to their abilities. (I pretend that UU doesn’t exist) It’s trained vocals, but hearing their harmonies makes me miss CSJH and I worry that this group will end up like them.

  24. Looks like nobody likes MBLAQ, it’s sad. They are in my top 3 male idol groups with Block B and Big Bang. For me MBLAQ is the most entertaining group, thank god they have plenty of shows (Sesame Player will always be my favorite amongst all the idol shows) and I like their music

  25. Yourbiasisshit

“allows people to link back to it and say dumb shit like, “OMG YOU ONLY SAY THAT BECAUSE YOU LIKE THEM OMG BIAS“, thus ignoring any logic I’ve included in the post”

    Hahaha…this so true….not even funny.
I hate when I make a good rational comment about one topic and some people go “yourrrr biased blah blah”.
Clearly, they don’t know shit about how I am. LOL

Mmmm…it’s hard to pick my favorites because I kinda put them into categories.
I have favorites in every category.

-For catchy songs and nice looks/outfits: Kara, 4minute, Miss A and SNSD.

-For ballads: B2ST (I’m not a ballad person at all. For some reason I can only tolerate/love theirs. Must be Yoseob’s voice or something.)

-For upbeat songs: Big Bang, Block B (and maaaaaybe 2NE1 too)

-For variety shows: Super Junior, MBLAQ and 2PM (not giving a shit about their music AT ALL)

-”I will fuck every member” groups: none (because there is always someone I find fugly in every group)

As for JPOP, I mainly follow solo singers and this is about groups.
But I do love DB5K’s japanese stuff (never liked them as a Kpop group).

  26. Even though you don’t really care as much about Morning Musume anymore, how do you feel about Reina’s graduation?
I was half-hoping her and Sayumi would graduate at the same time.

  27. I really have a thing fo rhte Gollum look-a-like from SPICA. Kim Boa or sime shit like that. She’s awesome.

  28. Never heard about CSJH the Grace before this post, so after the comments i got some of their records, they are really really good, thank you for the recomendation.
Also, im glad so many enjoy SPICA and A-pink, my 2 favorites groups right now, i just hope they dont get shelved because the sales aren’t high enough.

  29. I haven’t heard of half of these groups (mostly the K-pop ones) and I don’t like the other half of the groups you’ve listed besides perfume :/. I tried hard to resist the charm of those bitches. The bitches don’t sing live, sound like hatsune miku on helium, are not involved with the creative process of their music at all and I just can’t dislike them. *Plays Hurly Burly, gets on all fours, and whips my imaginary weave”

  30. id never heard of SCANDAL before but it seems like a disservice to them to put them in a list next to generic pop idols, they’re a rock band in the traditional sense and are legit musicians

    • I don’t think they write their own music and stuff though, they just play instruments. Unfortunately, they are starting to slant towards pop idol music a bit, probably trying to boost their sales.

  31. YEESSSSS MATSUJUN YEEEESSS been making idiotic goggly eyes at him ever since I was a fourteen-year-old little ass.

And fuck, I like A Pinkeu and AKB too, okay. As much as most of their songs revolve around shallow young love (though granted, AKB’s lesbo songs are hot and I actually like their deeper songs— River, Kaze wa Fuiteiru, Beginner, Keibatsu Shiteita Aijou, etc), they’re cute and pretty and they’re funny as hell in varieties. Still a somewhat closeted fan of them though, cause my lovely friends would say that one is too /pink/ and kawaii and the other “just sell sex to pervy old Japanese men ewwww”. They seem to forgot that their oppas sell abs and hip thrusts to pervy young girls? And liking 2NE1 and miss A doesn’t make you a fierce bitch, since it’s all just a matter of preference?

AND YES PHANTOM BURNING IS AWESOME I APPROVE.

And I like every song that Infinite’s Sunggyu sings solo, too. Because, his solo version of Only Tears, all the songs in his new mini album thingy. His voice suits well with the type of songs they give him, and there’s just this kind of “oh that Gyu’s song” vibe in each song that he sings idk.

  32. Want to give you a high 5 for most of your music choices.
I’ve pretty much listened to a bit of, if not a lot, everyone but the last two, but i haven’t been into the jpop world for years now.

Love the older kpop groups. Event though CSJH came back for a while (not really) i was still rather disappointed. Felt like sme just gave them some song that was lurking in a storage room somewhere cause f(x) didn’t want it. KOREA Y DO U NOT APPRECIATE!

my love is forever dbsk :o
(but you know, matsujun is pretty awesome)

  33. “They’re talented, so of course they’re irrelevant in Korea.”

Ugh, the truth hurts way too much.

I can see that we both like the same groups for almost the same reasons.

  34. Strange..I haven’t heard of some of the groups mentioned.

  35. erm, weird because you’re the first to like them as TVXQ/JYJ after separation. Well, for me at least. what about 1TYM, H.O.T.?? I love baby vox too hehe :P
