HyunA set to meet with Scooter Braun in Los Angeles, Internet set to explode

HyunA is set to meet with Scooter Braun‘s agency in Los Angeles, thus opening the doors wide open for speculation about a potential American advancement from her.

According to one industry insider, “HyunA is currently in L.A. for a CF recording of an automobile brand. From what I know, she will be meeting with Scooter Braun’s agency, which is in charge of Psy‘s American management, during her stay there.”

The insider continued, “HyunA has been receiving a lot of attention from international media outlets with her new track, ‘Ice Cream‘, and is expected to be the next to continue Psy’s trend. Scooter Braun’s agency has been showing interest especially with her having starred in the ‘Gangnam Style‘ music video. There’s a big possibility that Psy will be meeting with HyunA in L.A. as well.”

On whether or not this means HyunA will be preparing for her American advancement remains up in the air. In a previous interview, HyunA had stated, “I do want to advance but I don’t think it’s anything I can rush. I want to practice more and do it properly, as well as learn more English. Although these are my thoughts, my agency has their own plans so I’m not sure what direction my promotions will take yet.”

Representatives of Cube Entertainment commented, “It is true that HyunA will be meeting with Scooter Braun’s agency while filming her CF but we haven’t scheduled a definite meeting date yet.”

So as you would probably expect, both international and Korean netizens find this notion rather laughable. Both sides basically think she lacks the talent to succeed in the market, which, in a vacuum, I have to say I agree with. Say what you want about the manufactured pop stars of America, but most of them have some type of original sound or original image or SOMETHING. And while I do like HyunA, even while others hate on her, her appeal certainly doesn’t revolve around how inherently skilled she is at making music.

As such, I can’t really see this resulting in a positive outcome, and normally I would just write it off completely, BUT … Scooter Braun is involved. So if he can somehow package her correctly and basically whore her everywhere like he did with Psy … well … maybe, just maybe, there’s an outside chance that she could gain the notoriety here necessary to put a foothold in. She does have the recognizability from the “Gangnam Style” music video working in her favor, which is something that others set to debut, like SNSD and 2NE1, still don’t have.

So what I’m saying is … there’s a chance.

  1. I don’t understand why Psy chose her in first place. Ok, it’s kinda understandable for original GS, they wanted pretty (?) girl for small role in the MV (her eyebrows were beyond creepy though), but why the hell they released that abomination of a song with her vocals. Why, Psy, why?
Fuck, even SNSD in America sounds not that bad now. At least they have two native speakers, I’m pretty sure Hyuna’s English is on Seungri’s level now

    • Maybe they get along well? By all accounts, she’s chill, apparently.

    • English level: Seungri – “YOU LIKE BACKPACK?!”"SHOTSHOTSHOTSHOTSHOT” and basically yelling all his broken Engrish lolol
lmao that video made me laugh so much

    • I think the discussion of the choice of the “sexy lady” in the MV went something along the lines of this:

Psy: “I need a ‘sexy lady’ for the Gangnam Style MV”.
YG: “Great! We have many hot women to choose from our roster of in-house YG talent. How about Park Bom or CL?”
Psy: “Uh… no. How about Hyuna?”
YG: “But she is with a competing company.”
      Psy: “I don’t give a fuck.”

  2. I agree with you, I also think she has a chance tbh

  3. Can’t see it working out at all. Feel like it will be a lot like SNSD on Letterman- lots of secondhand embarrassment

    • BUT… SNSD didn’t pop their pussies to distract the cunt hungry americans from the shitty performance.

      Hyuna is good at that.

  4. I hope her debut track is a remake of Kelis’ “Milkshake”. Since the version 4minute did was so entertaining.

She’ll probably end up going the lulzy route, right? It’s not like she’ll win any fans over with her amazing singing, rapping, writing, producing, and composing skills. :|

  5. Without make-up, HyunA looks like Jack from The Nightmare before Christmas

  6. FAIL!!!!!

  7. Can you imagine what will happen if Hyuna outsells SNSD in America? Oh God, please make it happen.

    • The butthurtness?! The suicide petitions?! The glorious dumbass comments that are bound to happen?!
I’m writing a letter to Santa.

      Sone websites will implode

    • I’m not convinced certain segments of Korea would even want her to be their breakout star in America if it meant coming with a sexualized image.

      • Then they should wake up and realize that that’s exactly what the western world wants (unless you’re Adele).

So either they deal with it and give us as many crotch shots as possible or stop giving a fuck about breaking through in western markets. Or would MOGEF and the kinds rather have them not breakthrough at all if it comes at the cost of Korea “losing its good (=hahaha) image”?

I am definitely missing sexy Asian celebrities on mainstream TV. They are like non-existent over here.

  8. I do think she can make it but not in the condition she is in right now. I mean this girl can’t even lip-sync properly on stage and actually I think she should quit as a singer. However, she still has that likable personality and maybe he can put that to use. It will take probably few years before he can present her to the American public but he can use the same magic he did on Justin for her too.

    • I wonder how much a likeable personality matters though? Some of the biggest singers do not have a very likeable personality. But they are scandalous as fuck, which makes them interesting.

So release a porn tape of Hyuna banging Psy and she’ll be a star over night.

      • You know what the sad part is? If that actually did happen, it would probably get a lot of press.

        :o

      • LOL, I wouldn’t want to see a sex tape with Psy, maybe her and just the ice cream.

You’re right though, that personality wouldn’t get her far but it’s a start for now. I mean what else does she has to offer?
I remember when Taylor Swift first came to the scene, she had nothing going on for her. She was terrible at performing specially live but she had that “good girl next door” shit and everyone was rooting for her after she got dumped over the phone. Sometimes people just want to relate to you rather than see/hear another great singer, there are plenty of them already.

  9. i wouldn’t be surprised if she ends up being a porn star

    • I’d watch it.

If she doesn’t moan in the voice she used for the second version of Gangnam style. That’d be a huge turn-off.

  10. I think Hyuna could make it big in the US, only if she plays up the stereotypical Asian sex kitten, which is what she is doing at the moment.

She in my opinion has more chance of succeeding in the states than 2ne1 and SNSD,even without the Psy endorsement.

    • Because of the groups thing?

I would think 2NE1 has the best chance out of the idols.

      • I agree. When I got into kpop they were the first girl group I liked (their charm kind of wore off quickly though, possibly because of crazy blackjacks) and I’ve seen other people start listening to kpop and they consistently find 2NE1 the most appealing of all the groups.
Plus having members who can speak english doesn’t hurt.

  11. Unless some marketing miracle I can’t see her succeed. I like Hyuna myself but I can’t imagine her selling in the US. Strictly based on my own experience with Western Kpop virgins, they get quicker into 2NE1 than other female idols. Even in contrast to Bigbang 2NE1 scored better – which left me wtf for a while…
Although Bubble Pop! seemed to appeal to young males – who knows why *cough* – her current style and image is just way too clusterfuck even for a post-Nicky Minaj and post-Gaga US…Ice Cream is one giant bubble of style and music blasphemy and if she tries to sell this I see dark.

A 180° turn might give her chances but it has to be a catchy song and she has to look her best ever – not Korean best but Western best. If the people behind her don’t focus and pay attention to the shit they do, it will be a definite flop attempt.

Her connection to Psy and Gangnam Style can also only help if there is a basis to build on. She has to have the charm and catchiness to be able to use Gangnam Style…Even if Oppa Is My Style gained some popularity, no one mentions it, no one plays it, no one gives a fuck. So that alone will have zero effect on the public.

  12. Her engrish is too shitty. And if psy is just a one hit wonder, which is possible, HyunA will go down the drain with him.

    • Yeah, that’s ALWAYS my concern.

Even personable and diverse personalities in Korean tend to come off hollow and dead in English because they’re focusing their energy on speaking the language.

That’s why SNSD really come off robotic to me in English, even the “native” speakers. They are far more entertaining in Korean. Sucks, but it’s a reality, I guess.

  13. I find this whole situation laughable. Well Good luck with that.

  14. oh crap, they r going to hear her singing.
