JYJ & SM Entertainment supposedly agree to go their separate ways, but why trust that now?

JYJ and SM Entertainment have reportedly come to an agreement just moments ago, with both parties withdrawing lawsuits against each other and agreeing to go their separate ways.

After what seems like forever, the two sides are reported to have come to a mutual agreement on the 28th.

It is said that SM Entertainment and JYJ have both withdrawn all lawsuits against one another, and have agreed to not interfere with any of each other’s activities.

The long drawn out fight was started back in July 31st, 2009 when the initial lawsuit was filed against SM Entertainment by the three members of JYJ, who were part of TVXQ, requesting for the cancellation of their contracts. Since then, the two sides failed to each an agreement every time and was due back in court again later this year.

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is, right? Well, this sounds too simple, thus we should probably wait for details.

Agreed to not interfere with any of each other’s activities.

What? That’s the thing though, what was JYJ interfering with? You have to wonder then what exactly SME is getting out of this, hence my skeptical eye to this “deal”.

Basically, I’m writing about this because it’s significant news and I feel like I should be, but with little to no actual details on what it means yet, all I can basically say about it is, “Please don’t overreact and just wait for the specifics.

Put it this way, the chances that everything is now all good is remote, but people on Twitter and shit are celebrating like they just got a political prisoner released from jail or something.

I would think that the TVXQ fandom would have become cynical by now, especially on the JYJ side after everything they’ve endured, and the last thing I would be willing to do is trust that SME just agreeably dropped everything.

  1. I, too, am skeptical. I wish both sides would reveal the terms of their agreement but maybe non-disclosure is one of the terms both parties agreed upon in order to seal the deal.

JYJ will still be blocked, they’ll just use another excuse.

  2. DIS GUN BE GOOOOD

  3. Another Account

Yeah either SME has the rights to souls, first borns, etc. now or they’re planning on locking JYJ into same dungeon Hangeng is in. I do not believe this ended with hugs, kisses, and good luck wishes.

I wish they’d settled that shit before Junsu released Tarantellagra. I would’ve loved to have seen his little raunchy ass hip thrusting on Music Bank. Can’t wait to see how this unfolds.

    • No way they’ll be allowed to perform anything on SM-biased Music Bank but yeah, I wanted to see him performing that awesomeness sooo much

    • Went to his solo concert few months ago (thanks to a friend who literally dragged me there) and Tarantallegra’s live performance is fucking GLORIOUS lol
I am now a stan and I think he’s fucking amazing and I fucking love him idc

    • And he’s gorgeous irl, too

  5. …. I think the guys will no longer receive royalty checks from SM anymore…. A clean break is what they were granted I believe

    • Based on what?

      Or just your opinion?

      • no just my opinion , I dont believe the guys of JYJ could afford to continue battle in court. A clean break would be the easiest the agree to for both sides.

  6. SM is slowly flopping they can’t afford to keep this lawsuit anymore.

    • That’s what I was thinking, the Japanese market isn’t working out for SNSD. Super Junior is near disbandment. I don’t know why they don’t actively promote Shinee in korea, everyone loves them. And then they just cast aside F(x), not to mention the other flops they left behind.

      • Don’t forget all the money they wasted (not spent, not inverted but wasted) on Exo debut. They too spent the most money on hype, visuals (ps, makeup, dermatologist, diets, long etc.) and even when it worked for some years is was meant to fade away, that’s the thing about hype.

        • omg, I forget about exo, where are they ?

        • d.o.s_lopsided_eyes

EXO makes me sad. I was so happy that I’d finally found another SM group besides Shinee to stan over and then they just fucking dissolved into nothingness. That What is Love song still makes my lady parts tingle and I miss D.O’s angry little face, but what can a girl do?

      • no one lnow shinee in korea, what are you talking about ? they’re better in japan making some money for SME.

    • This. SM’s stock crashed a few weeks back, and it still hasn’t recovered. The crash was so bad, KSE (stock exchange) had to put an emergency stop, to keep people from bailing on SM stock. JYJ had been requesting a record of accounts from their time in TVXQ, which SM had been stalling to produce, asking for a continuance several times, or bringing the wrong documents/witnesses to court. SM pretty much threw the current TVXQ duo under the bus, by releasing a statement that their stock crash, was due to lower than expected earnings from the duo’s Japanese concerts.

I think the SM accountants and lawyers probably told them, it’s time to concede in this fight. Continuing the case, would have exposed any shady accounting.

    • This lawsuit was pocket change though.

Their losses in Japan have nothing to do with the lawsuit and everything to do with the changing market.

      • Kinda off-topic:

SM usually makes the most money, right? And most of that is from Japan?

Sooooooo with their groups doing poorly I Japan+ groups ending/ flopping/ not promoting in Korea…. Would you say that it would still be the case this year?

I was thinking that PAY must’ve brought in some money, even though he would only get it from Korea (with YG only getting money from Korea)

        • The albums might not be selling like hot cakes on the Oricon anymore, but the Dome and Arena circuits TVXQ and Shinee’s been pushed on are probably still contributing more Yen into SME’s P/L than any other thing right now.

Btw, can EXO actually be considered as flops? Music-wise they’re probably still finding their footing, but the money SME burnt on promoting them seems to be working their magic based on how crazy and huge their fanbase has gotten in such a short period of time, which in the K-pop world, means (easier) money from the fangirls.

  7. Seems to easy, but maybe SM realized that they weren’t going to win this one and decided to save up some money.
Shit still isn’t going to be easy for JYJ though, especially poor Junsu whose trying to actively promote his songs.

    • I don’t understand why people think SME was involved in the lawsuit to win. They were involved and prolonged it this long to cockblock them.

  8. I’m unsettled and really don’t know how to react to this.

After the initial 5 second happiness that it’s finally over, i read the article and felt suspicious.
aside from my OT5 heart dying a little, it’s SME and just have a really hard time trusting anything they do.

  9. I’ll believe it when I see them performing…

  10. Even if it’s true, I don’t expect any major changes. I think fans exaggerate JYJ’s problems a bit. They appear in movies, dramas and musicals, their album sales are pretty good, they have concerts sometimes. Yeah, they don’t appear on music shows and variety, but they have much more free time instead and honestly I don’t think such promotions can improve their sales much (they are good without it).
But if their issues with SM are magically over now and they can appear on music shows now, I think they most likely will do it YG-style anyway (once or twice a week), don’t expect to see them much on variety either

    • Thisss so much.

Off-topic: I was looking forward to seeing Junsu live in Germany this weekend, but bad timing and no moneys.:/

    • The drama with SME benefited them, really.

At least their popularity. Probably not their personal lives though.

    • completely agree. And plus, the only reason idols do variety/music shows is for promotion and its not like they really needed that. Btw music shows only pay $100 a performance right?

      • I think artists’ agencies pay for stages on music shows (backup dancers, makeup artists, sets, etc), music shows just provide cameramen and other staff, and edit that shit. Not sure if artists get any money at all

  11. I’ll believe it when I see it :/
Love them or hate them, JYJ doesn’t deserve being treated like shit all this time,, especially the fuckery that happened to Junsu a while ago :(

  12. You know how in action movies, when the main character and the main villain are fighting, and the villian says “Ok, let’s rest for a while, keep it civilised”? Then the hero agrees, turns around, shows his back and the moment he does that the villain stabs him in the back?
I don’t particulary care for JYJ, but I do wish them luck in all that mess.

    • LOLOLOLOL- OMG, I freaking love you Tap

    • Or when they pretend to become really hurt and cry for help? Is that what’s going on in Japan right now? A staged handicap so people will say “Poor SME..” for sympathy!?!? Lol jk probably not.
But I agree with your movie scenario, it’s super sketchy.

  13. You should trust it because the media told you so.

  14. I’m having hard time processing this not because I part of DB5K stans but because it is so… anti climactic, I guess??? Gimme the fine prints!!
I’ll believe it when I see them singing on music shows, appear on varieties etc.

p/s: saw someone post some reactions/comments from music exec/PDs on this matter but not sure whether it is true or not since I couldnt find the source. but seems that they still finding excuses to continue to block them.

  15. Yay it’s over. DB2K 4eva!!!1

  16. so it’s true, the world will end soon D:

  17. They will be screwed over again. Fans shouldn’t be so content with the outcome just yet

It would be a great and hilarious dick slap to SM if JYJ came out with news that they were signing with YG or JYP. How glorious that would be…

  18. IGNORES SENTENCE IN BOLD AND OVERREACT!

RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE!!

  19. Yeah….. first they were cockblocking everything JYJ was trying to do, and now they’re like “Eh….whatever. We’ll stop……” Crazy fans will be crazy stupid fans. It’s not something I can just buy and just know there’s more than just ‘we’ll stop interfering with each other and some behind the door crap just as there’s behind the door crap to this whole issue that started in the first place. But y’know, delusional fans will just think, “Who cares if there’s more to this!!! SM will FINALLY leave our boys alone!!!! AKTF!!!!!!!!!111111!!!!”

    • icrawledoutofthesea

I’m sure I read somewhere this morning that JYJ’s agency have said they expect everything to continue pretty much the same. i.e. Don’t get excited, kids.

I’m sure that SM got everything they wanted out of this deal. Let’s face it, these boys are probably at their peak right now and willing to pay out more money to SM than they likely ever will again. Yoochun has dough right now from all his dramas, Junsu has the hard-earned money from thrusting his pelvis, and Jaejoong .. from whatever it is he does. I think SM calculated it all out and this was the best time for them to strike. For how many more years will these three be in the spotlight? Kpop is a YOUNG business and these guys are getting kinda long in the tooth. Sad, but true.

    • I think you have it backward. JYJ already had their contract invalidated in 2009 and also won the right to promote freely as JYJ in 2010. This lawsuit was about how much compensation SM had to pay them. I think JYJ just decided to move on. Like you said, they no longer need anything from SM, and at least this way the kool aid drinkers can’t blame them for anymore SM losses or for being “greedy” and taking money from SM.

About getting older, yes that is true, but at the same time, I think being out of the idol world for 3+ years has helped them. They are now in this independent artist bubble, but have the fandom of the typical kpop group. They have created 2nd careers for themselves, where they are believable and succeeding in. Junsu, just won one of the highest awards for musical artists in Korea. Yoochun seems to have completed the transition to being seen as a serious actor, not just an idol actor. And Jaejoong, seems to be a jack of all trades, plus works behind the scene as a director and song writer.

      • breakYourNaughty

        Gotcha. Thanks!

      • Gold star comment. I do wonder how long the TVXQ duo can go on what with Yunho’s enlistment coming up and both barely having any presence in other fields of the entertainment industry(variety/drama/etc).

  21. Trying really fucking hard to give a shit.

    ..
    ….
    ..
Nope, didn’t work. Back to Asian penises it is.

  22. I’m more so waiting to see what happens. I don’t trust SME’s word on this. Plus JYJ didn’t interfere with anything they were doing.
