Wonder Girls‘ Sunye is getting married in January of next year, which is not only surprising news for her, but potentially significant news in the K-pop world.

Wonder Girls’ leader Sun (Min Sunye), an artist under our agency, will be getting married on January 26th of next year.
Sun, who debuted in 2007 and led the Wonder Girls as their leader for six years, recently informed the agency as well has the Wonder Girls’ members about her intentions, and understanding that her decision has come after much thought, we have decided to respect her decision.
Sun will be focusing on her marriage and family life for the time being, and the other members of Wonder Girls will be concentrating on individual activities such as acting, producing, solo albums, and broadcast activities.
We hope for many messages of congratulations and encouragement.

Congratulations to her, because this stuff is far more important to her life than all the idol bullshit. However, in terms of the entertainment world, this is big news because of the future of Wonder Girls … or lack thereof. Say what you want about them now, but they were undoubtedly once one of the marquee girl groups in Korea, so their potential disbandment is a big deal.
In a letter she wrote to fans, it sure sounded like an era was coming to an end, though JYP Entertainment vaguely hints that the Wonder Girls are still in her future. A disbandment of the group has been speculated on for a while now, and those rumors will only pick up due to the seeming impossibility of meshing married life with being an idol. Like not being able to stack bonus codes on one purchase or something.
If a married idol seems like an oxymoron, it’s because it is.
My impression of the Wonder Girls has always been favorable, so while I hope I’m wrong that their run ends with JYP destroying their careers with his ill-advised foray into America, it certainly seems like their run is set to end soon.
lol JYP pretty much hammered the nail in the coffin with its own announcement. “Individual activities” = Wonder Girls are pretty much done.
Well~ it was a nice run while it lasted. It’s kind of unfortunate that they didn’t end where they should’ve, considering their top girl group status on par with SNSD four years ago but they did have a lot of accomplishments.
JYP should just let them end it on a good note with her marriage. If he tries to “revamp” the group by adding members, he’ll kill the Wonder Girls name for sure.
But, all in all, CONGRATULATIONS SUNYE!
WG have always been in talk for solo activities. I believe the comment merely states that the WG will be doing solo activities for a while, during the time Sunye prepares marriage and settles in. It’s so the rest of the members don’t twiddle their thumbs.

At least it’ll end their thousand and one remakes of “Nobody.” It was sad to see… and then the horrible attempt to make it in the US… just make it stop.
If it’s more than just a break while she settles into married life, I hope it’s because she wants to and not because she feels pressured to. I think there could be a way to make a marriage work and still have something of an idol career (perhaps I’m being too idealistic, but there’s a first time for everything). Plus I think a couple of solo records for WG could be a good way to challenge JYP to let others collaborate with the girls/come up with new shit.
I know what you’re talking about in relation to the expectations that the woman becomes domesticated, but I think the bigger issue is that idols, in general, aren’t supposed to be doing this and have the same type of careers. Same reason Jin Akanishi’s career is surrounded by speculation that he’s fucked.
I disagree. Honestly, when it comes to WG, they’re popular because of their catchy tunes and gentle personality. No one has ever said
” I want to make out with Sunye” or be in a relationship. Maybe with Yubin but not the rest. This is the same notion with 2am. They’re appreciated for talent, I suppose, and not their appearance. Of course this is relevant with SNSD.
I understand most idols are popular because their fans have the desire and hope that they will someday be in a relationship with them, but this just isn’t the case with WG. This can also explain their low fan base etc.
I’ve read a lot of reactions, and they all didn’t care. They were just worried about them disbanding.
That could be even worse, really. Them being a sexual object makes them sort of unattainable.
The more fans “love” them for their personal attachment to them, the more difficult it becomes.
I wouldn’t worry so much about the fans as much as their broader appeal, scheduling concerns, and her personal life.
Goodbye Wonder Girls. I wish it ended better than this. JYP screwed up your careers. You should at least be ending it as a The Top Girl Group. Congrats to Sunye.

Solo albums of WG members… I don’t feel good about it. They did not so well as a whole group this year, they will do even worse as solo (JYP is slowly loosing its position in Big3, Wooyoung and Jo Kwon kinda flopped with their solos).

I hope JYP loses his title as big 3. So they can actually wake up and realise a lot of their mistakes. Such as their poor marketing, planning and always using JYP’s songs.
After 2010, they’ve been failing left and right. They need to realise this, so they can work hard, fix their problems and come back strong and regain their title. Lets admits something first, JYP definitely are worthy for top 3. However they’ve been lazy.
Just like SM. They rely on marketing ans visuals.

Tbh they are better off having solo careers. For me the writing was on the wall for this group it was just a matter of when. But congrats to Sunye & I wish her the best. But I do agree w/ some of the comments I wished they ended better than this. I mean sure GG is top dog now but honestly do they really have any competition now. But WG had to go against DBSK, Big Bang, solo artist Lee Hyori, Rain etc.. come on and still crank out hits out like Irony (favorite), Tell Me, Nobody, Wonder World (one of their best album IMO) so I feel a bit sad is that they didn’t end on that high status. But good luck to the rest of the group though. Man I don’t know what is up with JYP as whole anymore. :/

I think K-pop’s best years are behind it now.
Maybe it will revive in time, but it seems like the “bubble” has burst. Falling sales, major groups disbanding or reshuffling, etc, Psy’s 15 minutes seem like they are up, etc.
The industry will still stay relevant, since it still seems popular throughout Asia. But the “wave” seems like it has lost a lot of its strength.
I think otherwise. Yeah, maybe Hallyu is slowly dying in Japan but international fanbase is getting bigger and bigger (just look at youtube views of popular groups, even rookies now have millions of views)
A lot of people use programs for those views. Like repeating programs. And others stay up night and day refreshing the videos.
This. High views for Kpop videos doesn’t always mean they’re popular, it can also mean there’s enough people who have enough free time replaying the videos all year long

They’ll be fine in the long run. The important thing is that the surge has likely made them permanently relevant on the world stage, much like Japan’s decades ago.

This is rather overdramatic. Of course WG are no longer the #1 girl group and yes their popularity is down from what it was in like 2008 but this is makes it sound like they’re only comparable to F.Cuz or Co-Ed or something now…or like they were ruined by some kind of major scandal. They can still top charts, they still win awards, and their music has undoubtedly gotten better…and so has their dancing, among other things. This is quite shocking but I’m happy for her. Sunye is one of most wonderful personalities kpop ever have. Having Sunmi back to the team and replaces Sunye’s place is a lot better option than letting them doing their solo activities imo.. I don’t want them to disband :(

She’s still with JYPE, continuing her training or sort of, and the girls have always mentioning her as a WG member. I just think that they will have a better opportunity to shine as a group. Except for Yeeun, I don’t think they will have a success solo career, as she (and Sunye) are the only vocally capable members of the group. Acting ventures? As much as I enjoy watching them at that nickelodeon movie, I wasn’t impressed by their acting skill..

Would you say Cube has replaced them? They seem to have more influential and relevant groups in the Kpop industry now.
I think that if Pledis had more money, they could’ve been as powerful as the big three since they have AS and all of its subgroups, Son Dambi, NU’EST, and Hello Venus
Perhaps in time, Pledis will rise up. I think they’re probably heading there with like a thousand groups lined up to debut. They had auditions in the US for Asian Americans a while back for not only singing and dancing, but for modeling and acting. Unless all companies do that… Then ignore that sentence..
Pledis hasn’t done anything significantly great. Ask someone to distinguish Pledis from Starship or LOEN and they wouldn’t be able to. JYP still has its own brand and it stands out in comparison with other companies. I don’t think JYP has been doing phenomenally well and is lacking behind SM and YG, but they’re definitely better than Pledis.
“leaving the future–” Hold up right there. WHAT? She’s getting married. No one has said the Wonder Girls is halting their activities or will cease to be a group or will suck from now on. This article is just lapping at any scent of controversy – WHICH THERE IS NONE.
Halting activities is exactly what they hint at in their press releases.
