Is there anything better/worse than SNSD's Sunny trying to cop an attitude?

So SNSD‘s “Dancing Queen” is awesome … because it’s Duffy‘s “Mercy” except in Korean, and I didn’t have an issue with it because they look amazing in the music video. However, what I wanted to talk about was Sunny‘s … interesting hat towards the end.

SunnyWelcomeMotherfuckers

Like … how am I supposed to take that?

It doesn’t come off as ironically clueless like KARA‘s “Best Fucking Five” shirt or G-Dragon‘s “CUNT” beanie, because SM Entertainment obviously realized that it’s a profanity and censored it. Therefore, the only thing I can think is that this is a conscious choice to try and make Sunny … what? Hood?

Welcome Motherfuckers” from the same idol who has constant aegyo competitions is just … confusing. Worse yet, the spoken word over it at the time is, “Ayo stop, let me put it down another way.

NO PLEASE NO DON’T GO THAT DIRECTION ESPECIALLY IN AMERICA UGH

I’ve complained about this before, but the reason why K-pop comes off as inauthentic for me is that 99% of the time their personas completely contradict their ever-shifting “concepts”.

BUT … it gets point from me because “Welcome Motherfuckers” is EXTREMELY close to the line from Dexter‘s Sergeant James Doakes that I use in real life all the time:

So there’s that.

  1. I always thought that complete disregard for western concepts of ‘authetnicity’ was k-pop’s greatest strength. I honestly find it refreshing, and I hope they never learn.

    • that constant defiance of authenticity is fun at first, but after a while it gets really tacky and annoying

      • I’ll take it over the west’s “oh we must do it THIS way otherwise it’s not cool” self-consciousness any day.

        • I’m not sure you have a leg to stand on if you’re gonna get into comparing self-consciousness between Asia and the West.

          • Obviously Korean are self-conscious too, I guess what I mean is that they don’t quite grasp ‘the rules’. If that makes any sense. Maybe it doesn’t. Never mind lol

          • I know what you’re saying, but I think it’s gotten to the point now where they’ve crossed the line into taking everything seriously so now that excuse doesn’t pan out.

    • It is when they’re not trying to be serious about it.

  2. Okay, but, wait, did you watch the season finale of Dexter????

I look forward to Sunny’s Doakes impersonations.

What’s the deal with the trailer park whore trend

    • mybiasbeatsyourbias

      i can’t understand the hat?
      It says “Welcome motherfuckers CKers”
what does that mean, CKers? is it crackers or something else that nobody understand but SM would know

      • AJCommentator

I don’t think it says, “Welcome motherfuckers CKers.” It just says, ““Welcome motherfuckers.” The star is just replacing the U, not the whole word.

I’m trying to say this in a friendly and helpful tone, but it’s hard to sound helpful and friendly while saying motherfucker. Haha.

      • Hello my boricua friend

  5. Wow, SNSD would have been way different if they’d released that over Gee three-four years ago.

    • What exactly would be different? They’re doing the exact same thing in “Gee”

      • Well, I don’t think they’d be nearly as popular. The cute thing wouldn’t have hit bingo, so Oh! might not have happened. Who knows?

  6. Also, the SNSD teaser pics are all pretty terrible.

  7. They’re following the trend of try-hard shit clothes and it never works (unless you begin with it: hello Venus/crayon pop). It the same situation with Fiestar, who look like a bad attempt at debut-version-f(x). The only way they can pull it off is cause they’re snsd. I’m thinking the song will be totally different (I really hope to god) cause that’s how SM functions.

At least SM gave us sexy Seohyun.

    • The style they seem to be trying to copy in that teaser is Hyuna in “Ice Cream”. The hat, the clothes, even the tattoos.

I almost wonder if someone at SM is seeing the “international fame” that Hyuna has been receiving recently and thought, “Hey – that must be what westerners like.”

  8. Doubt the comeback will be any good. They said it’s a song from 2008 that wasn’t used. So my question is, if it’s good then why not include it in their album in the past? Also I don’t believe them for a second when they said “they’ve been working hard on the album and lead single”.

  9. dramakween000

Id cop an attitude too if they gave me a multicolored bowl cut. At least Snsd are classy bitches who try too hard in Vivien Westwood rather than Jeremy Scott.

  10. Oh god, their teaser is terrible. They should stick to their cute stuff, The Boys was a step in the wrong direction, but it looks like they will only step further with this comeback. I hope their actual song will be different (that tiny sound teaser was worse than Crayon), and please, no rap. That “A-yo” is disgusting. And what’s wrong with their stylist? Jeremy Scott, Boy London and Andrea Crews. Really? The only thing left is that Comme des Fuckdown shit. Fuck no

    • its been a trend though, “put a bunch of random shit in a room and throw on colorful hipster clothes from trashy designers” the problem is they cant pull it off. VIPs are pressed because they claim the teaser clip was sampled from crayon. haha. it all sound the damn same. Hopefully the teaser shots have nothing to do with the actual concept like troll SM usually does.

  11. i don’t care what anyone says, they did no justice to this song. i feel like they are trending after YG’s success with Lee Hayi but instead of coming up with their own shit…they just copied. again. but hayi had the enormous voice to carry it off. SNSD voices sound like drowning rats in the underways of NY >.<

  12. this aegyo thing killling me in the mv.
i like the original song, and these girls can sing, but it did not like it.

  13. Embarrassing tbh

    And the video… WTF

  14. I really liked the sound of this song, but the title Dancing Queen is a little misleading when half their dances look like something that awkward white girl who can’t dance would do at a party. They also still look very good which is a plus. Although I was quite confused when the AYO GG came out. I was like, “Huh, why are they telling me good game?” Then I realized it was GG for Girls Generation haha. Teaser bit for the next video looked absolutely horrendous though. I hate the hipster look and whenever I see one I imagine an irritating voice in my head going “Heh, I started dressing like this before it was cool.”

  15. When I first watched this MV, I thought, “Oh, good – they’re going back to their old style.”

Then I read that not only was this song recorded back in 2008, this music video was also filmed back in 2008 and never released until now (with the exception of the new intro and ending teaser parts, of course).

So, everything about this is 4 years old (which is a good thing in terms of GG style, IMO).

Not sure where they’re going with the new concept next month, but it sure seems to me that they’re trying to craft a more “international” (in their mind) style.

I hated “The Boys”, so I wish they wouldn’t continue with that “we’ve got attitude” concept. It just doesn’t fit Girl’s Generation at all. Although I have a feeling this might be even worse, based on the teasers.

  16. I like her in variety shows, but god is she ugly

  17. WHY THE FUCK DOES TIFFANY KEEP RAPPING?! FUCKING UGLY AND SHIT. My ears are bleeding. Tiffany thinks she’s some Eminem or something. LULZ. a-yo let me put it down this way, honey….YOU SUCK ASS. Being able to speak English does not permit Tiffany to rap in English much less sound like a wannabe gangster. -shameful.

  18. A group photo has been released.

    http://static.allkpop.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/20121222_girlsgeneration_igotaboy-600×600.jpg

Looks like they’re celebrating the death of a unicorn.

That’s their new concept: Trailer trash unicorn hunters.

  19. milkywhituskinned

I just realized, that beat at the end from their new song it’s from Beyonce’s Who run the world.

    • Nope. Beyonce used Pon De Floor, by Major Lazer, aka Diplo, who produced the song. This beat is nowhere near the twerkness of Pon de Floor. Not like anyone in SNSD has the ass to twerk anyways LOL

      • milkywhituskinned

Oh, yeah I heard it again and it doesn’t sound that similar, still remind me of it tho

  20. Cringe cringe cringe.

  21. I like their comeback pictures , but I’m a fan of SNSD so I really don’t care which concept they show. I just hope the song doesn’t suck as bad as the The boys .

    • Probably going to be the same type of song, EDM and all, but better produced. People were bitching about SNSD releasing hook songs all the time, now they are trying something new since that’s pretty much where music is headed now. I’m sure that another Gee will come around, as long as they keep with it.

  22. I was looking at Hyoyeon, trying to figure what was up with her face looking “normal” again…but hearing this was made in 2008, it makes sense now. Seriously SM, we get it- Hyoyeon has had lots and lots of plastic surgery. Sometimes I wonder if they put her in the group as a bet or a joke-’hey, let’s put the ugliest trainee we got in a group with a bunch of hotter members, then convince people she’s attractive as well.

  23. The real question is “how can anyone in the kpop industry act hard?”.

  24. I actually really love the teaser pictures and everything.
But SNSD is my favorite group, so I’m just biased as fuck.

  25. I’m not gonna like, I freaking loved this (except the random teasers in the video)

I thought that the song was good and the video was fine apart from the excessive aegyo.

    BAM

  26. d.o.s_lopsided_eyes

Really didn’t dig the song at all, although it could be that all the cringe-inducing aegyo made me just shut down seconds into the video.

  27. This was awesome, I almost died when the MV and all the Teaser photos came out.

Besides for Sunny, Tiffany and Taeyeon. The others looked FINE AS HECK, even with the fake lenses. Unf, that Seobody.

I’m looking forward to getting second hand embarrassment from the rapping though. I can’t wait for Tiffany to lay down those rugged rhymes.

    • Sunny and Tiffany look so much better in the Dancing Queen video than they do now. That fat by Sunny’s cheeks in the teaser either means she’s aging, she’s got botox, or she’s getting fat. Tiffany is the same way. Her face is stiff every time I see her. Taeyeon looks cute now and then, so it’s cool :3

  28. video removed

  29. Personally thought it was a very stupid idea. Plus if you are gonna go that route at least make that hat look cool. It looks like a cheap piece of crap hat with writing on notebook paper glued to it.

  30. It’s nothing. If she wanted to be blatant she would have said 씨발. We’re so used to seeing the word “fuck” that it hardly phases us.
