allkpop posted their review of SNSD‘s “I Got A Boy” recently, and within that review was the claim that not only was it SNSD’s best release ever, but that it was perhaps the best release in K-pop history.
I have absolutely no complaints about this song. It is without a doubt the strongest release by Girls’ Generation—and perhaps in all of K-Pop—to date. Kudos to SM Entertainment for their obvious hard work to transition these girls from an object of the male gaze to a legitimate musical group. Good luck to K-Pop this year; you’ve got your work more than cut out for you.

First of all, I think ‘Genie’ is their best release. Second, I know too little about kpop that I really cannot say IGAB is the ‘strongest release’ ever in all kpop. Plus, Crayon Pop has better songs.

As for “I got a boy” being the best K-pop release, like many here, I just have to disagree. In the K-pop industry, I feel too many people are just scared to voice their true opinion on something popular. Between not pissing off SM Entertainment and the massive mobs also known as fans, most people just nod their heads and just say it’s “the best evar!”
Hopefully, true feedback can show SM Entertainment that their song wasn’t the great. Then SNSD can get back what they do best – consistent, mainstream, sugary beats.

It’s just an opinion. All music reviews everywhere are basically crap because music is 100% subjective.
But since we’re giving opinions, I liked IGAB just because it’s breaking the 3:30 pop mold and doing something a little different. History might look on it kindly, just like how Black Sabbath’s progressive arrangements were hated at the time by all critics everywhere but are praised highly in retrospect. Having said that, I only find certain segments of IGAB pleasing to listen to. I don’t know. Does it matter? All I know is that AKP’s opinion isn’t any more or less relevant to me than anybody else’s. If nothing else the song is a promotional gem for stirring so much shit.
But calling this the greatest K-pop song of all time is sorta like calling “The Oogieloves Movie” the greatest film of all time.
It’s just an opinion, but it’s a ridiculous one.
The fact that it’s a marquee review for the largest K-pop site on the internet makes it even more ridiculous. That’s why the reviewer is getting (and deserves) so much shit.
Yeah I guess it’s not the opinion itself that is the problem, but the context in which it’s being presented.
I mean, I could say that I think IGAB is k-pop’s equivalent of Sgt. Peppers (and it kind of is because I think Sgt. Peppers is overrated psychedelic crap that ruined popular music too, hahahaha), but I don’t have any particular vested interest in expressing that opinion, or in what people think of it. It IS different when a big news site does it.

I guess I never liked the opera bit in Bohemian Rhapsody much either. Or much of Stairway To Heaven for that matter (both songs absolutely hated at the time by their group’s existing fanbases for being too indulgent and complicated). It’s easy to see why critics are wetting themselves over this, it’s structurally different and it gives them something to write about. But love it or hate it, this will become a classic k-pop track.

i really think this song is fucking trash. Its a good thing that SNSD already has a strong fanbase because if rookies sing this…well, we’d never hear from them again. This is probably the worst song I have heard from SNSD. I don’t know Korean so I didn’t realize it was trying to portray a story or some shit from different perspective, but I just remember going like wtf why does the song keep changing so much and each time it just gets worse. As another negative, they also look like absolute shit in this video too. Granted most of them are still very attractive if you are able to focus solely on their face, it is almost impossible to do in all the mess, colorful hair, and clothing that is everywhere. Although in a previous post I commented on how the dance in their Dancing Queen was childish, I still find myself listening to it quite often and enjoy the simplicity of the video/dance. For this I got a Boy however, I haven’t played it since I first listened to it a 3 days ago, and I hope I don’t have to hear it again.
