Today’s Ask Asian Junkie will be short, because I don’t think the answer is that complicated, but it gives me the chance to make a minor point about other companies and their futures.
Do you think it’s time for SME and YGE to start investing in the development of a new top-tier idol groups for their respective companies? Aren’t SNSD, Big Bang, Super Junior, and 2NE1 are getting old in K-pop years?
Yes, and isn’t that exactly what they’re trying to do?
SM Entertainment already came out with EXO, and YG Entertainment is in the process of doing their extensive hype-machine routine for whatever the fuck their new girl group is going to be.
They’re not dumb.
The labels I would really worry about are the smaller ones that are basically carried by one marquee group at the present. Like DSP Media and KARA, for example. I have zero idea what these companies are going to do down the road, as even if they tried to debut new groups, they would likely get lost in the rookie flood like everybody else because they don’t have the same power/money as The Big Three/Four.
=====
I have nothing better to do, so send me your questions here: Ask Asian Junkie.
Asian Junkie Asian pop. Without discretion.
DSP already debuted Puretty last year, and speaking of DSP, they remembered that Rainbow exists.
Really? When did DSP remember dem sexi bishes were in their roster? Here’s hoping for a new single soon, with extra booty shakin’ on the side.
http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_ljcjc0RnqB1qijtj9o1_1280.gif
Yeah they’re bringing Rainbow back. Check out this bit I wrote about them.
http://popdust.com/2013/01/23/rainbow-are-finally-making-a-comeback-but-is-it-too-late/
Holy CrayonPop, batman, it’s TheProphetBlog! Imma need to read dat (+1 for the shameless plugging of your article by the way, HATERZ GON’ HATE)
I really miss Rainbow. They are fucking hot, would shave their shitty anuses for them.
But you won’t let anyone touch yours lol. Let me find out that someone playing with your anus is your kryptonite…
It’s all about power. And it’s definitely the one doing the anus rape that has it.
And there are probably only a handful people I would allow to play with mine.
@No_Min
Hmmm, I’ll just do it to you while you’re sleep
In Japan.
Rainbow is a good example of what I meant when I said I have no idea what DSP Media is going to do.
Much less Puretty.
Odd thing is that while SM and YG are debuting new rookies people are crapping all over them with hatred. I guess they are afraid of change.
I think it’s because said rookie groups aren’t all that. Small labels have debuted better acts. Lee Hi is the dullest thing ever and EXO-K are okay but they’re not very original.
B.A.P, SPICA, and Crayon Pop are better than a lot of the stuff coming out of the bigger agencies,
CRAAAAYYYYOOOOON POP!
Sorry….I just can’t help myself when it comes to them. (I also was going to extend Pop, but then realized that that would make poop. *hangs head)
So glad to see that you also support the legendary KWEENS of Crayon POPE like I do!
My favorite rookie girl group.
Instead of wasting money starting from scratch building their own new soon-to-flop girl groups, one of the big three should just acquire or invest in Chrome Entertainment. They’re already doing everything right – they just don’t have the capital and industry connections to properly promote Crayon Pop.
Agree.
I only agree with SPICA.
I think there’s a problem with B.A.P. and it’s that they’ve found a good voice, but keep using the same speech.
They see them as threats to their faves.
Oh and about DSP I guess they finally realized they can’t get by with just Kara alone because they are finally giving Rainbow a come back.
They debuted a new girl group and boy band, both of which flopped HARD.
This.
Wait…didn’t DSP debut A-jax or something like that?
Well, regardless, they are still flopping badly.
Yes, that goes to my point. :o
DSP have been such flops. A-JAX and Puretty both flopped so hard. I loved Puretty, but only because they were literally Honey/Rock U era KARA.
I think the problem with all the new idol groups is that they’re cloning their old acts. EXO-K is a mash up of SHINee and SuJu (and they even used TVXQ’s screamo breakdown in their Mama song), Puretty was just KARA remade, and YG’s new girl group has just been looking like attractive girls dressed in YG merch — a prettier 2NE1.
The big 3 seem to be running out ideas, whereas labels like TS Entertainment and Nega have debuted some fresh rookie acts like Lunafly and B.A.P. The big 3 need to get a little more original. Or maybe just invest in some good solo acts, since solos are making a bit of a comeback now anyway.
Ngl I’m excited for the “prettier 2NE1″ group
I am too slightly but only if they can actually dance and don’t do 2NE1 electroflop b-sides. I’m sick of YG artists not doing choreography.
so far the trainees in videos YG randomly uploads can dance…just vocally if they’re on Jennie Kim’s ‘level’ then they’re all screwed.
I assume this girl will be part of the group:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VdhLxKFcOWQ
Might be the best female K-pop dancer I’ve seen. Better than any current girl group members, anyways.
But it won’t matter if they all suck at singing/rapping. Which, based on the other teaser videos I’ve seen, looks likely.
…And it won’t matter if all the other members suck at dancing. Minzy’s good, but 2NE1 doesn’t dance, so she only gets the occasional dance break to try and remind people.
no points for Bora? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GEVqMao-kvU
i hear she’s a pro on the pole too…
she’s good…but the best?? kinda a far stretch… YG has been trolling this group for so long…i feel bad for die-hard YG stans.
UNF that Bora video made my panties disappear in a matter of fucking seconds.
So how does one get legs like that?
I guess I’m just more impressed with how quick and precise the new YG trainee’s movements are. I don’t know that I’ve seen anything quite as good. Then again, it’s always easier to dance like that in the studio vs on-stage with heels.
Bora probably has the best combination of looks and dancing ability in K-pop (most of the best dancers are the least attractive members of the group). But I wouldn’t say her dancing skill is on the level of that YG trainee.
But other than that, I haven’t see anything so far with this new group that has lived up to the hype.
Being able to do any of this probably makes her one of the best just on potential alone: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNP7VvCfAos
Since most of K-pop dance has now devolved into body rolls and shit.
Yeah – Zinni is capable of some pretty crazy stuff. Although most of those moves look like injuries waiting to happen. Not sure I would even want her doing that stuff regularly if I was her manager.
I appreciate the fact that Zinni is a b-girl, that is always awesome, but she kinda lacks energy and precision in her movements ( I mean usual hip-hop routines, not her b-girl stuff ) and she’s a bit stiff. Here for example:
http://youtube.com/#/watch?v=8oyHz2lfKG4
I don’t expect much out of idols.
:o
JYP’s JJ project are original in my opinion, and the strongest rookies to ever come out of their company.
Where the hell are they anyways? Thought they would be more successful.
Guess Dream High 2 was so hated that they went down the drain with it.
Exactly. I have no idea what JYP is doing.
They’re AWESOME too. I haven’t seen any rookie with such confident stages. I WANT MOAAR.
I think Hello Venus is a good group. That doesn’t really have anything to do with this subject but maybe everyone should just debut Hello Venus. And then problem solved????
Was the person who asked this question living under a rock last year? EXO was shoved down our throats. Endlessly. For the first half of the year. I think that’s a sign that SM is really putting their ₩₩₩ into them.
Not to mention…
Pledis: already debuted NU’EST
JYP (and their subsidiaries): 15&, Baek Ahyeon, JJ Project, and GLAM (Bullet Proof Boy Scouts will debut this year under Big Hit)
NegaNetwork: Lunafly
CCM: just debuted SPEED
YG: Lee Hi (SuPearls will debut this year)
So yeah, I think YG, SM, and the other bigger companies are well aware that their money makers aren’t high school students anymore who can survive on 5 or less hours sleep, caffeine, no intimate contact with the opposite gender, and still cheese it up for the camera. The men are required to join the military and not all the women are aging gracefully. They know [most] fans will forgive them so long as they avoid the Dirty D’s: drugs, dating, death defying stunts, diarrhea of the mouth, and dropped from the label. Unfortunately, all of these have been committed already in some fashion, so to keep the money flowing in: make more groups and let the older ones rest to prevent any more of the aforementioned Dirty D’s from happening.
Sorry for not keeping up with Kpop like you
Believe it or not, I don’t keep up that much. The only group I actually caught during debut promo was Nu’est. Lee Hi too (only because I stan YG). Everything else: thank you google, wikipedia, and nautiljon.
EXO doesn’t count cause apparently SM doesn’t count What Is Love as a debut and I’m sick of the trend of everything trying to be KYHD 2.0 or Rising Sun 3.0. i.e. I skipped everything after What Is Love and avoid Exo-K like the plague. I only give a fart about Exo-M now and that’s recently (like today recent).
JYP and Co. doesn’t count either cause I only care when a friend stans them. I don’t listen to them otherwise. I only know about GLAM from listening to vocaloid and wouldn’t have heard them otherwise.
Correction: I don’t listen to anyone else from JYP that’s not the fabulousness that is Jokwon (and the other 3 in 2AM) when my friend isn’t stanning them. Everyone else: forgotten after a week.
I kinda have hope for Nu’est. But they need to be more adaptable.
You know when SM debuts EXO, they’re already preparing their new group. It’s a boy group in 2012, so it’ll be a girl group (read somewhere that it’ll be a mix group) next, it’s just an SM thing.
I wonder if they’re going to come out with a solo act, since that seems to be what everybody does these days lol
Jino. Where the hell did Jino ever disappear to?
While it’s important to invest in the future, I think the way YG is handling their new hyped-up girl group is bad business.
The ideal way to handle it would be to get 2NE1′s sizable fanbase to embrace them as a sister group.
Instead, YG is positioning them as a “replacement”, which is pissing 2NE1 fans off.
On top of that, he seems to have put 2NE1 on the back-burner to focus on his new pet project. This is another mistake. 2NE1 is at the height of their popularity – to not capitalize on that is stupid. He should be promoting 2NE1 as much as possible right now in Korea and slowly transition to the new girl group.
Instead, it appears he has prematurely written-off 2NE1. Doing this will set the new group up for failure because the Blackjacks will reject them out of spite, if nothing else.
This so much. I used to think YG had more sense than that, so I am confused by this marketing strategy. He is using the EXO book of promotion (Over-hype, which ultimately leads to backlash on debut). Continuously dissing 2NE1 by saying these new girls are pretty, they are like SNSD, they are natural beauties with no need for plastic surgery, he is making people dislike them. YG used to be known as the place for talent not just looks, and that earned them some cred, I don’t understand why he is trying to turn over the focus and image of his company. It’s not like SM and their beauty first style is outselling him. Even with just 2 groups he is selling as much, if not outselling SM, hence my confusion. He forgot that linking 2NE1 to Bigbang is what made their debut so successful, he should be doing the same for this new group. Both YG stans and SME stans already hate these new girls. I see an EXO level or higher backlash in their future.
Oh and something tells me Supearls is on a long back burner, with Lee Hi’s solo success, issues with Michele Lee and YG never being able to stick to a timetable.
I feel like YG is showing its a lot less edgy than they want to appear. Especially with all these normal looking korean girls who join YG and all of a sudden get the YG makeover and now they’re all ‘edgy’ and ‘hard’ and shit. Its like I am SO SURE LITTLE KOREAN GIRL.
He never said the upcoming girl group in years to come will replace 2ne1. He simply stated they’ll be as successful as them, which is a major compliment and hype.
Well, 2NE1 fans don’t seem to be taking it that way.
I’m not talking about that clip he posted of really young kids dancing called “Future 2NE1″ – I’m talking about the new group he’s been hyping up. I don’t think it’s “years to come” – I assume this group will debut much sooner than that.
Sorry I misread. Oh I didn’t know this. The same thing happened with Miss A and Wonder Girl, but that was quickly gone. Therefore it’s plausible for 2ne1 fans to feel the same thing, but it’s stupid.
I mean, YG said 2ne1 was supposed to be a female version of Big Bang, now I don’t see VIP’s still angry over it.
It’ll probably pass, doubt it’s a major issue.
I thought originally this new group was supposed to be “YG’s Version of Girl’s Generation”. But all the teaser clips he’s releasing seem to be more like “2NE1 – Except Not Ugly”.
I think that – combined with the fact that 2NE1 hasn’t really put out anything new (other than “I Love You”) in like 16 months – is why 2NE1 fans are unhappy.
Are you affiliated with drama fever or something?
Click it so our Lord of the buttholes doesn’t have to live off of food stamps.
Rofl.
Honestly, I’m enjoying the direction YG is heading. They’re hiring the right people, promoting the right artists, giving the right music and have a great market team.
At the moment, out of the big 3, YG is doing the best.
JYP has a bad marketing team. Their music is bland and one dimensional (Thanks to JYP). We simply don’t care about their artists. We cared about 2pm, Wonder Girls and 2am. Miss A started well but then they dropped.
SM is purely based on marketing. They haven’t released any praise worthy music. They sell their idols by placing them literally everywhere and make them work 24/7. They’re the “Beats” in the headphone industry.
I agree with this.
Not too fond of any of those companies but YG is doing better right now (although he is neglecting 2NE1 and BlowJobs are going crazy).
Don’t know what the fuck happened with JYP. I loved Miss A’s music and the members in the group. Fuck, I even like 2PM because I can fap to them like it’s the last day of my life. And Wonder Girls, well yea. Their fame was destroyed like a 7 year old anus raped by a whale.
Exactly.
I don’t know what’s going on in JYP anymore. The problem is ironically JYP himself. The direction and music he’s been giving his idols lately have been disappointing and questionable.
The most frustrating part is that JYPE has the potential to overtake SM. They need to stop using JYP’s songs, have a much better marketing team, and promote a lot more.
For example,
Wonder Girls – Wonder World album. Using any other song on the album and it would be better than Be My Baby. Or they could of have used Be My Baby as their second single, like SM does.
Miss A – Touch. Same thing, Touch was a good direction to take, but the song wasn’t comeback worthy and didn’t grab enough attention.
2pm – Hands Up. Their comeback single was repetitive and boring after the 3rd listen.
JJ Project. They should’ve used Hook as their debut single. While Bounce was interesting and fun, Hook was a better representation and song for them to use.
I’m done. JYP was my favourite entertainment company because their idols introduced me to kpop (Wonder Girls, 2pm, Jo Kwon, JYP himself, the relationships within the company etc).
Now I give up. Wonder Girls are close to disbanding, if not it’ll be a painful process of them slowly losing fans and eventually dying out. The 4 year wait for their American album was for nothing, and the constant hope that they would regain their fame from 2008-9 is tiresome.
2pm became one of the best and famous boy groups, to outdated and simple.
Miss A lost their fame. They started out very strong and promising, being a good contender for Kara and 2ne1, now no one seems to care anymore or have any interest (except for Suzy)
JJ Project started out very strong, but nothing has occurred since and fans have forgotten about them.
LOL. “Blowjobs.”
YG does seem to be doing well but i think he’s fallen prey to idea of having young group members. The average age of the maknae in a group used to be like 16-17 and the oldest would be like 3+ years older and now you have fucking Pledis debuting an 11 year old (not sure if western or korean age). All in all, he should be working with what he’s got first before trying to compete with other labels.
As for JYP, he’s full of himself. On 99% of his artists’ albums, there’s always one song that SHOULD have been the title track but it didn’t have the JYP whisper so of course it got canned.
actually he’s 14 not 11 year old. But he looks 11. Puberty still didn’t hit him.
Well, it’s not necessarily the first time YG has invested in younger kids/trainees. Look at GD and Taeyang. Even before Big Bang, they were on stage with Se7en, JinuSean, Perry Storm, etc. at the ages of 13/14.
but they were good weren’t they? and they trained for years AFTER that..i feel like YG is only putting this girl group out now because he casually mentioned something about them and then a bunch of people went apeshit like, “WHERE THE HELL IS THIS NEW GROUP YG..WHY YOU LIE..YOU LIEEEEEEE TO MEEEEE.” It also seems like this group is gonna be “that group who only has 2 people with lines because everyone else needs vocal training still.” But it’s okay, i mean YG’s probably gonna have GD vomit all on their debut song so it stays relevant.
Persobally, I believe he’s debuting young idols because he needs a new idol group. His stock exchange fell and the next day he stated “I’m debuting a lot of new idols”. After stating that to keep his stock exchange high, he had to keep his promise. Then in an interview, 2ne1 said YG all of a sudden recruited new trainees. So I believe he’s debuting them young not because of artistic purposes, but becaus of his promise to keep his stock exchange high.
That’s my question YAY!
There is not enough sex talk or trolling in there so I don’t believe you.
I would love if IATFB answers on of your lovely questions
Lol yeah it mines
Anyone and everyone could ask a question that’s sex-related, and if IATFB ever answers them, everyone would assume they’re all yours lol
. I think the SM factory should send out a solo artist now. kpop is losing me these days, I still watch the Korean dramas but the music scene other than Nell I’m already kind of over. I was hoping SNSD would come out with something stronger but sadly no.
yeah i want a BoA 2.0 but minus the dying-cat voice
I would be nice if they debut some solo artists and made some good music too.
Fuck the big 2/3/whatever.
Your favourites had a comeback: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=whLAXOzNSqI
I like it a lot. They just don’t give a shit, running around like the antisocials in my old neighbourhood. Just without the stabbing and stealing.
Nevermind. Looks like this is not a comeback? :o I was trolled.
May all your mailboxes get spamed if you subscribed to this article just to find out I am talking to myself here.
After some Google research: So it really is? With an old song? LOL, they really don’t give a crap. Awesome – gimme some D so I can celebrate this.
also THIS is how you get Bora legs
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BiU9wEGYJOo
dont you just wanna make it raiiiiin on her.
Oh, crap.
I’d break my fucking neck trying to do that.
Wtf, this shit is so weird. And what are they wearing, lol. I still can’t get what’s with this strange Crayon Pop obsession on AJ
Those bishes are hot like yellow sneakers fam
Never checked them out before this and was wondering as well. Just not enough to actually check them out cause I am a lazy bitch and I usually don’t like girl groups that much (since there is no Taemin peen – or usually ANY FUCKING PEEN – involved).
But this is great. :D
I will get my wish soon though, Taemin is in BoA’s next MV. They better fuck or I’ll cut some vaginas in half.
