IU & “The Best Lee Soon Shin” drama under fire because … HISTORY! and DOKDO!

TheBestLeeSoonShin

KBS‘s drama “The Best Lee Soon Shin” stars IU and it has come under fire recently for using the name of Lee Soon Shin/Yi Sun Sin, an outstanding 16th century admiral, and joking about Dokdo.

A line in the drama where recruiters tell IU (Lee Soon Shin) to “just go protect Dokdo or something” as the punch line of a joke is under controversy for not only trivializing the Dokdo issue as a joke but humiliating the achievements Lee Soon Shin made in his lifetime.

1. [+1,103, -48] Not only this but there’s also a line where they say “Then Lee Soon Shin is of course worth 10 cents, how would he ever be worth a dollar?” ;;;;;;; There are so many lines that just make you not want to watch this drama

2. [+1,085, -47] This pissed me off as well. Since when did Lee Soon Shin become someone to joke about?

3. [+1,038, -38] The scriptwriter has lost her brain

Yeah! When have revered historical figures ever been something to joke about?!

Oh, right.

Then there’s this youth group, named DN, who wants to ban the drama altogether, which is just lol.

A representative from “DN” stated, “When you search the name ‘Lee Soon Shin,’ IU’s name comes up. On Naver, which is the most used search engine in Korea, the result of this search is disturbing.”

Lee Soon Shin, which coincides with the name of the character IU plays, was a heroic Korean naval commander who fought against the Japanese navy during the Imjin War. This youth group stated that they are deeply concerned with how much this drama would confuse Korean children’s knowledge in Korean history.

The representative from “DN” continued, “On a survey, it was found that over 50% of elementary students do not know what March 1st Movement is, and 70% do not know how to accurately draw the national flag. In addition, when they are asked who their role models are, in the past they used to name King Sejong and Lee Soon Shin, but now they say MC Yoo Jae Suk and Kim Yuna. We are afraid that by the end of this drama, children will now think Lee Soon Shin is IU.”

1. [+373, -17] I just thought about this and I got chills down my spine. IU’s already advanced into Japan and Hallyu’s the craze all over the world, this drama will 100% be exported. Then to other countries like China and Japan, when they think of the name Lee Soon Shin, it will not be our historical figure but an idol named IU.

WE ARE FUCKING SHITTY AT PARENTING, RAISING, AND TEACHING CHILDREN!

THEREFORE YOU HAVE TO BAN THIS DRAMA!

THE CHILDREN! DOKDO! HISTORY!

SomebodyThinkOfTheChildren

Give me a fucking break.

WHAT IF AMERICAN CHILDREN THINK GEORGE WASHINGTON ACTUALLY HAD 30 PENISES?!

Ridiculous to argue about, right? Exactly.

It’s amusing because Lee Soon Shin probably wouldn’t have whined on the Internet like a little bitch. He would have instead used his intelligence and devised a strategy to educate the youth about the person who was allegedly being overlooked in history.

Newsflash, you aren’t exactly doing his name any favors by citing his status and making him this symbol for a delusional, emotional Internet revolt — one that revolves around a DRAMA — that’s obviously being led by idiots.

Chances that Lee Soon Shin would kill these people if he were around? 100%.

So I guess they don’t air Family Guy over there

  2. NANA'snumber1bish

This might sound pretty radical and crazy, but why don’t Korea and Japan just divide the ‘Liancourt Rocks’ in half? There are two main islands, after all… no? Is that too simple?

    Besides,

    NOONAR DIDN’T MEAN IT

    • I_wish_I_was_asian_because_kpop_is_so_awesome

      I really dislike Nana

    • because of its large abundance of natural resources.

    • its actually because they want the rights to the surrounding water, which has a lot of resources. So whoever gets the crappy islands gets the money. and it goes back to hating the japanese for koreans, so its a huge deal for national pride

      • NANA'snumber1bish

Well I know pretty much every island dispute nowadays is about the resources that the surrounding territory would bring, but it just seems sad to not just sort it out in the most diplomatic way possible and move on.

I don’t know, I’m neither an expert on the issue nor am I a diplomat, so feel free to ignore my drivel.

        • That’s the thing, there’s no real diplomatic way to go with this because of the groups in power. Ishihara is gaining a lot of traction and this fucker is about to raise tensions to a whole new level. The saenuri party would almost never bow down to what seems like a concession on their part. it’s just not going to happen.

    • Someone comes to your house and says “this is my house – not yours, because my great great grandfather once lived here”. You explain to them that it is, in fact, YOUR house, not theirs. They then offer to make a compromise and say “okay – we’ll just split the ownership of the house”. You wouldn’t take that “compromise”, obviously.

I’m not trying to legitimize the fight over these stupid rocks, but I believe that is how the Koreans and Japanese who really give a shit about this issue see it. There is no room for “compromise”. It is a black and white issue for them.

  3. I dunno, it’s your shitty kid, you fuckin’ tell them. Why is that anyone else’s problem – Louis C.K.
On a completely different subject yet always relevant

  4. I only know about Lee Soon Shin now because of this weak-ass controversy. HALLYU SPREADS KOREAN HISTORY SUCCESSFULLY.

  5. So many butthurt whiteknight beta phaggots as netizens it’s insane.

  7. What if people think IU was a general in Dokdo in the 16th century

  9. I got lots of hostility for stating pretty much exactly this opinion over at NB. People over here seem to be more sensible, you guys should comment over there more and dilute some of the cancer.

    • I don’t think reason would help though :/
For some people, they will see how idiotic they are acting for fighting over something so unimportant. However, there is always a good amount of block-headed idiots who are stubborn as FUCK and will never ever EVER say they were/are wrong. And these block-headed idiots are the ones who stay on the internet to defend said idiocy. Sometimes I read arguments over the internet and I think, “Who the fuck has time for this? I’m busy looking at videos of cute cats and puppies and pokemon memes.” Which is, btw, TIME WELL SPENT :)
