Keanu Reeves‘ latest project, ‘47 Ronin‘, is based on the legendary Japanese story ripped straight from history, and it has recently released posters and trailers.
The reaction? It’s been mixed, depending on your expectations.
Watch the trailer first:
Okay, what the fuck just happened?
To say that the trailer was loosely based on the actual ’47 Ronin’ story (here) is a tad misleading since it’s not even remotely based on reality, period. Hell, it doesn’t even have the general story outline of the source work since this shit was never about dudes taking over the world.
That said, this does look sort of awesome. The concept is basically exactly like ‘300‘ and ‘The Battle Of Thermopylae‘, where they take a real historical event and then throw fantasy elements all up in that bitch.
Plus, unlike ‘Old Boy‘ and … well … basically every other remake of an Asian film/story, there are actually almost all Asian actors playing the characters (Sanada Hiroyuki/Asano Tadanobu/Shibasaki Kou/Kikuchi Rinko/Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa/Jin Akanishi). Yes, it plays into the trope of a white dude saving some minority group, so it’s sort of like white male fantasy fulfillment like countless other films, but at least this film has the courtesy to pretend a bit and give Hollywood work to Asian actors and actresses.
Besides, look at this shit:
