So if you haven’t heard yet, there’s a gigantic rap diss battle going on in Korea right now. It started off with Swings and a couple others trying to make trouble, then it blew up when E-Sens, Gaeko, and Simon D got involved, and now everybody and their mother is trying to get a piece of the attention-whoring pie.
How big is it? It’s gone completely mainstream in Korea with even gossip rags picking it up, which eventually led to allkpop translating rap diss tracks (yes, really), which has to be a first of some kind.
It’s getting amazing, honestly. And it’s about time.
That said, it all started because of idiocy.
As all true clusterfucks should, the whole thing begun because Swings has no fucking idea what Kendrick Lamar was actually saying in his guest spot on Big Sean‘s “Control“. In Swings’ diss catalyst track, “King Swings“, he namechecks Kendrick at the very start, making it clear that he was inspired by him. Thus, he decided to make a track that calls out basically everybody in Korean hip hop, which is what he thought Kendrick was doing to American hip hop.
The problem, besides Swings fucking sucking at rap, is that he completely misunderstood the point of Kendrick’s “Control” verse.
I heard the barbershops be in great debates all the time
Bout who’s the best MC? Kendrick, Jigga and Nas
Eminem, Andre 3000, the rest of y’all
New niggas just new niggas, don’t get involved
And I ain’t rockin no more designer shit
White T’s and Nike Cortez, this red Corvette’s anonymous.
I’m usually homeboys with the same niggas I’m rhymin’ with
But this is hip-hop and them niggas should know what time it is
And that goes for Jermaine Cole, Big KRIT, Wale
Pusha T, Meek Millz, A$AP Rocky, Drake
Big Sean, Jay Electron’, Tyler, Mac Miller
I got love for you all but I’m tryna murder you niggas
Tryna make sure your core fans never heard of you niggas
They don’t wanna hear not one more noun or verb from you niggas
What is competition? I’m tryna raise the bar high
Who tryna jump and get it? You’re better off tryna skydive
Out the exit window of 5 G5’s with 5 grand
He read this as a massive wide-ranging diss. Problem? It wasn’t. Rather, he was trying to say everybody needs to step their game up, and basically everybody called out took it that way, with some even being mad at Kendrick for NOT calling them out.
So, of course, it makes sense that the biggest mess I’ve honestly ever seen hit the mainstream in Korean hip hop started because a shitty rapper has no idea how to interpret American lyrics.
Anyway, after that, it really took off with E-Sens going buckwild on Gaeko and Amoeba Culture (the company), then Swings called out Simon D, and Gaeko/Simon D fired back. At this point, everything has gone nuclear as far as news goes, which means this is the biggest break Korean hip hop has gotten in forever. Thus, everybody wants in on that fucking action.
So now basically everybody is involved. People are just using this clusterfuck of media attention to draw attention to whatever they want to say and are airing it all out. Hell, even Block B‘s Zico got called out for shit that was completely random. BBC’s are all offended and shit, but it says a lot that these guys are even bothering to address him. Meanwhile, all the hardcore idol rappers are deeply involved in this scandal … ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh no.
I really can’t be bothered to recap it all because new tracks are being released seemingly every hour, but Hip Hop Playa is doing their best to keep track (here) of the madness, and the translations are around the web if you just search for them for a second.
I don’t have a dog in this fight (except Swings sucks), but this is actually great for Korean hip hop as long as nobody gets shot or something.
The only downside is having to deal with all these tweens that have never listened to hip hop get all fucking bent out of shape over swear words and mean things being said.
Which reminds me, I honestly just wish they would do this type of shit in K-pop so I could watch all the tears flow.
