I’m going to confess a secret.
The last time I paid attention to a male idol act was back in 2011, when INFINITE released “BTD“. To me, “BTD” possessed a first-rate combo of style, presentation, and execution. It was dark, but not melancholy; its style hit the concept right on the head; and who could forget that slick bit of choreography (also known as the ‘Scorpion Dance’)?
All too soon, promotions for “BTD” came to an end and I found myself losing interest in the other boys. EXO? (Too serious). B1A4? (Forever stuck in middle school mode). Teen Top? (You mean, Teen Flop)?
There’ve been so many male group debuts and middling nugus out there that I lost all motivation to keep up.
But then, TASTY rode in out of fucking nowhere and saved my interest in male groups from flatlining altogether.
If I had to describe “MAMAMA” with one word, it’d be ‘delicious’. They packaged this song like how I like my cigars: tight and fresh. The song doesn’t carry superfluous weight, such as long vocal solos or Konglish rap lyrics. Sometimes, people just want to hear a track that’s sophisticated and neat.
