Chinese K-pop idols express support for One-China policy, some also directly support HK police

Yesterday I wrote about Lay ending ties with Samsung over them offending China by not abiding by their One-China policy, and he also warned Calvin Klein about it. While that got the most attention due to ending contracts, he is far from the only one to post about One-China policy, as basically every celebrity working in mainland China has done the same.

This includes native Hong Kongers like Jackson and even the Taiwanese Lai Kuan Lin. Others are f(x)‘s Victoria, WJSN‘s Cheng Xiao, Xuan Yi, and Mei Qi, Kyulkyung, GOT7‘s Jackson, SEVENTEEN‘s Jun and The8, NCT‘s Lucas, WinWin, Yangyang, Hendery, and Xiaojun, Cao Lu, Fei, Pentagon‘s Yanan, and (G)I-DLE‘s Yuqi. It’s similar to the unified message shown about the nine-dash-line.

There is also another post going around that takes things a step further and actually support the Hong Kong police (you can see the differences in the lead image).

There is also another post (that not all of the idols above retweeted) with “What a shame for Hong Kong” that says “I support the HK police. You can beat me up right now.” (This was said by a China mainland tourist/journalist at the airport, who got beaten up by the crowd after he said that). The hashtag says ‘I too support Hong Kong police’.

Lay, Cheng Xiao, and Kyulkyung have shared that one (pictured above), and at least The8 and Jun, Lai Kuan Lin, and Victoria are alleged to have shared it too. So did Sally from Gugudan and all three Chinese members of UNIQ.

Note: This probably isn’t all of them, it’s just what I’ve seen reported, so if you have any other names to add, feel free in the comments. Provide a screenshot to validate it if you can.

I don’t know how many of them are true believers and how many of them were basically just doing as was necessary, but at the end of the day, they’re still doing it, so anybody upset by that is entitled to that feeling.

Like these celebs are not the victims here. Are they doing it to save their careers and future earnings? Sure, at least some are. Everybody has choices to make, but if that choice involves doing nationalist propaganda for an authoritarian government, then they’re also gonna get backlash for it from those who don’t think that’s so cute. Not that hard.
