Day6 persevered through rough times and return with quality in “I Wait”

I wasn’t overly thrilled with Day6‘s debut with “Congratulations” and I don’t even remember what they released next (“Letting Go“), but “I Wait” is pretty fantastic.

When I had first heard about JYP Entertainment debuting a band group, I was naturally skeptical and thought it could honestly go in any direction. “Congratulations” winded up just being flat average, not good but not bad. Then with the whole scandal that happened, I thought JYPE might pull the plug on them. However, all was not lost, and they winded up getting through that rough stretch and coming back pretty damn strong in 2017.

“I Wait” switches up their sound a bit and if this is a new direction they’re going then I couldn’t be more welcoming. This effort ended up combining a lot of the modern pop trends that are going on with the rock sound the group has a foundation on. Elements of trap and weird synths are inserted in here, and it’s carried out with a chorus that goes pretty damn hard make for one of the most unexpected ear worms. The bridge is even great as well and the come down for the verses provides a consistently nice reprieve for the ears after the all the tempo and volume from the chorus.

The concept is also pretty great, as it has a clear urban vibe with some futuristic looking imagery. I didn’t expect this kind of video to go with this kind of song but it works really well and has a kind of vibe that would fit in pretty universally.

Also, whoever is the guitarist with the blue/silver hair?

Overall, Day6 did well with their comeback and I’m looking forward to them continuing this sound and hope they put out more quality songs like this. Their 2017 project of monthly releases is off to roaring start thanks to “I Wait”, and it only enhances the curiosity of where the group’s sound and image will go from here.
