Taeil has final appeal denied by Supreme Court, sentence for aggravated quasi-rape upheld

To wrap up a case where many will understandably find justice yet unserved, former NCT member Taeil had his appeal to the Supreme Court denied, meaning his original sentence from July of three years and six months in prison for aggravated quasi-rape was upheld.

The Supreme Court, which found no grounds for an appeal, also upheld the previous order for all three men to complete 40 hours of a sex offender treatment program, in addition to imposing a five-year employment restriction at institutions related to children, adolescents, and persons with disabilities.

Previously, he had the sentence upheld in appellate court back in October.

Technically, I guess it was always unlikely Taeil and his gang were going to get worse, as what they did was quasi-rape by definition since they got the victim drunk before gang-raping her. And as has been covered here before, the courts in Korea have consistently defined rape very narrowly.

Nevertheless, this was a premeditated and targeted act against a foreign woman, who likely seemed to them like a particularly vulnerable victim who would struggle to get justice. Speaking in terms of societal safety, it feels particularly unsettling because the nature of their crime makes one think they’ve done it before and very well might do it again.
