Shinhwa’s Minwoo accused of sexually harassing 2 women, company claims it was ‘misunderstanding’ that’s cleared up

Minwoo of Shinhwa was recently booked by police after having been accused of sexually harassing two women.

A source from the Seoul Gangnam Police Station reportedly stated on July 2 that Minwoo has been booked and is being investigated. The police stated that Minwoo is under suspicion of committing indecent assault on two women in their 20s who were sitting at the next table at a bar in the district of Gangnam. It’s said that this allegedly occurred when Minwoo was drinking with celebrity colleagues on the morning of June 29, and Minwoo was already acquainted with the two women. After the drinking party ended, one of the women reportedly went to a local police station at 6:44 a.m. KST and reported that she had been sexually harassed. She told the police, “I went to a drinking party and was severely sexually harassed.” She stated, “Lee grabbed on to both my cheeks and kissed me by force. He also touched certain parts of my body.”

In response, his company Liveworks Entertainment has released an official statement saying that the complaint will be withdrawn and it was a misunderstanding.

Hello. This is Liveworks Company. First, we’d like to bow our heads in apology to all those that must have been disappointed and shocked at the news about our agency artist [Minwoo] today. We spoke to [Minwoo] in order to find out what happened, and it was an incident that occurred out of a small misunderstanding at a gathering with acquaintances at a pojangmacha (tent bar). The involved parties have talked to each other and cleared up all misunderstandings. On reporting sexual harassment to the police when there was no sexual harassment, the other party will be withdrawing their complaint. However, regardless of the truth of the matter, Lee Min Woo is ashamed that his has happened at all. He is sincerely apologetic, and he is reflecting. As the involved parties have cleared up all misunderstandings, we earnestly request that everyone refrain from speculative reports. Once again, we apologize for causing concern.

Don’t think it’s at all cynical to be skeptical of his company’s explanation. Two women accused him of sexual harassment that sounds like it escalated to sexual assault, then after one went to the police, the parties settled it privately and the complaint will be withdrawn? I guess that could technically be true, though I think what constitutes as them settling it and whether this actually didn’t happen or not is the whole issue.
