BTOB’s Minhyuk & Peniel talk to MONSTA X’s I.M & Kihyun on ‘Midnight Idol’ about wanting to change the culture around greetings

BTOB members Minhyuk and Peniel were recent guests on Naver NOW‘s Midnight Idol, hosted by MONSTA X members Kihyun and I.M. For one of the segments, they discussed how it’s weird that’s they’re the seniors now and have juniors greeting them, with the two BTOB members in particular expressing that they want to change the culture around those greetings at music shows and what not.

Thought it was a revealing conversation, especially because this is not that rare of a sentiment. A lot of international netizens put a ton of emphasis on the importance of this kind of stuff as part of Korean culture, and that’s true, but it’s also true that there are many Koreans who resent the extent of it at times (especially in an office context) but just don’t want to bother changing the status quo as they get older.

So to see these four seemingly want to make things more casual in their industry, without losing the respect aspect of it, and talking openly about it represents movement on that front and maybe it’s part of a gradual shift in thinking.
