Irish guy on Reddit who doesn’t want to name his son ‘Jonghyun’ is definitely not the asshole

It’s not uncommon for parents to name their child with influence from media they love or people they look up to, and K-pop stans are certainly no exception. Though a recent thread on the subreddit Am I The Asshole about a man worried about his wife wanting to name their Irish son after the late SHINee member Jonghyun seemed to showcase what happens when people take their love for idols too far.

Yeah, it’s not so much the appropriation or appreciation difference she needs to worry about (though that’s definitely a discussion we could have), and it’s more about how the child is gonna get treated just for her own selfish Koreaboo-esque desire. Life is hard enough as it is without having to deal with extra shit.

Amazingly this is not even close to a first for K-pop stans, as there was already a baby named after BTS‘s RM, and the absolute worst was a child named after a ship of Big Bang‘s G-Dragon and 2NE1‘s Sandara Park.

I feel for you random Irish man, but hey, could be worse.

Update

I have been made aware of Vaekhyun Exoquielle Aeris.

I want out.
