HYBE’s ‘R U NEXT?’ collabs with Toss Bank so fans can show support for contestants with money (and help with market research)

In what amount to basically endorsement money and also free market research for HYBE/BELIFT LAB, and tons of young customers for Toss Bank, the upcoming idol survival program R U NEXT? has a collab with the bank where (Korean) fans can vote for their favorite and international fans show support.

Toss is not a voting app. It is an app that allows participants to send messages to the trainees whenever they save money using the app. When you use Toss and select the Gathering Space feature, you can choose which trainee you want to support. This creates a gathering space with photos. You are able to create up to 22 spaces. Then, every time you save money using the app, you can add a message which will be shared on the bulletin board along with the amount of money you saved. On the bulletin board, your message and savings will be displayed as random nicknames and everything is shared in real-time.

Bro, just what we need. PayPal but social media.

It’s not a voting app but you can vote on it (in Korea) for the show. Regardless, the most interesting thing to me is that you can open an account and choose a contestant, and the app will show the total amount that has been saved for each contestant like a vote ranking.

The amount saved doesn’t technically factor into the results, but they’re making a social competition out of it presumably for a reason, which is probably research. They want to know whose fans actually have the fucking money and aren’t just the best at using bots or whatever else.

Haha, yeah, totally don’t take it seriously.

I’m sure this will definitely be just for fun like they say and won’t be used in any decisions that matter.

As for the bank, well, getting more people on their platform should probably help the $200+ million loss they posted last year.

Toss Bank, the country’s third internet-only banking firm, said Friday it suffered a loss last year due to increased loan-loss reserves.
Toss Bank, which went into operation in October 2021, reported a net loss of 264.4 billion won (US$203.3 million) in 2022, the lender said in a statement.

Oof.
