Grace drops “I’m Fine”, the song & music video of the year (or something)

I have no idea who Grace is or how any of this came about, but her song and music video for “I’m Fine” was entertaining at worst and amazing at best.

Like I feel like my brain says I should hate this, but in my heart of hearts, I can’t NOT like something that uses the ‘Conversational English 101’ line “I’m fine, thank you, and you?” as the hook and manages to make it catchy as fuck.

The blatant “homages” to a multitude of different artists are so frequent that it’s difficult to tell where one influence ends and the other begins, and it could’ve ended up trying way too hard like many other similar efforts and just coming off as laughable in the end. However, “I’m Fine” trends in the opposite direction and succeeds because it never appears to take itself too seriously despite the hep-hap/sleigh queen/yolosweg presentation, and it always feels like its in on its own ridiculousness right along with you. Because of that, Grace and “I’m Fine” end up feeling like Kyary Pamyu Pamyu or Orange Caramel with a more hip-pop edge to it.

Can’t complain about the concept, and I’m hoping this gets some traction so we can see it further fleshed out down the road.
