K-Pop Diplomacy: Leaders Lee Jae Myung & Sanae Takaichi hit the drums to “GOLDEN” & “Dynamite” at summit

In what feels like some kind of example of the relevance and/or utility of soft power, K-pop played diplomat recently as Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and South Korea’s President Lee Jae Myung played the Japanese-made Pearl drums to the tune of K-Pop Demon Hunters‘ “GOLDEN” (HUNTR/X) and BTS‘s “Dynamite” during their meeting in Japan.

As absurd as it sounds, it’s no shitpost, as both of their official channels posted video of the event to YouTube.

It seemed like a surprisingly pleasant union, with the two sides pledging to boost cooperation at the summit, which might seem odd given their differing politics. But that’s likely a pragmatic thing, because … um, an increasingly unstable world leader (and supposed reliable ally) across the Pacific has seemingly almost forced them to prioritize shared economic and security issues.

2026!
