On October 4, Mnet’s upcoming audition program “World Klass” held a press conference with the 20 trainees, Mnet’s producing director (PD) Won Jung Woo, Stone Music’s producer Jung Chang Hwan, and Company SangSang’s PDs Jo Hyo Jin and Shin Chun Ji. “World Klass” is a mix of a reality and audition/survival show that aims to form a 10-member boy group called TOO (Ten Oriented Orchestra). The group is positioned for a global market and features trainees from Korea, Japan, China, the United States, and more.
In an amusing twist, rather than try to piggyback the show off other successful audition ventures attached to Mnet, the producers spent the press conference distancing themselves from the brand.
At the press conference, PD Won Jung Woo said, “This audition program is not being produced directly by Mnet. The production has been outsourced to Company SangSang. We partnered with them because we thought they could bring a fresh outlook to the show.” Stone Music producer Jung Chang Hwan said, “Singing and dancing is important, but I think the most important thing is star quality. With star quality, you can show many different combinations and opportunities to shine. When we cast the 20 trainees, we focused on star quality.” When asked about the difference between “World Klass” and former Mnet audition programs like the “Produce” Series, “Superstar K,” and “Idol School” (many of which are now under investigation for voter manipulation), PD Jo Hyo Jin said, “We want to focus on harmony instead of competition. The 20 trainees will not eliminated until the live broadcast. All of them will have the chance to stand on stage and show their talents to the audience.” Won Jung Woo also addressed concerns about voting manipulation and said, “Three of the final ten members will be voted on by a ‘World Klass committee’ that is selected every week. Another three members will be chosen through the mission evaluations, by experts who will be revealed through the broadcast. The final four will be selected through votes in the final live broadcast. The voting ratio will be fifty-fifty for Korean and international votes.” Jung Chang Hwan added, “We will be holding votes through Naver. Voting can take place from all over the world through V Live. Every episode, a new judging committee will be selected. We will put procedures into place to ensure a fair screening process. We are also working hard to make a fair and transparent voting process.”
