RESCENE complete their “season” of virality on YouTube in style

Hello hello and welcome back to RESCENE Junkie, where I had planned on catching up on things in one post, but as you’ve seen over the last couple weeks so much has happened since and they’ve blew up even more somehow. However, this is as good a point as any to kinda consolidate things since Solfa Studio announced the end of the YouTube channel’s “season” for now.

Anyway, I had planned to use this space to update on the extent of their ads, brand deals, ambassadorships and what not since they’ve gone viral, but quite frankly it’s been so much lately that tracking it would honestly take up too much of my limited time. Probably the three examples that showcase the degree of their “mainstreamness” is the ads for convivence store chain giant CU, the endorsement with Domino’s and a take that they are the rare general national idols for South Korea in an era where idols aim for national representatives internationally. Or really you could just check their views that have been achieved without so much a hint of English subs on the official versions (unfortunately).

Tracking back a little, in the midst of the gyaru stuff blowing up, Solfa Studio immediately sent Woni and Minami on a trip to Japan, where they went around talking to actual gyarus (original).

The girls seemed to really like Woni. Being pretty solves everything, lol.

A stroke of genius to capitalize on that momentum as quickly as possible with another entertaining video and then immediately pivoting Minami away from the gyaru stuff by doing a series with Woni discovering Minami’s roots in Chiba like they did with Woni and Geoje (original and original)

People said the trip to Gyoje felt like an opposites attract love story, so Solfa just started spamming GL tropes on this, complete with like cosplay type stuff.

Understandably, people were eating that shit up.

Also, the “oishii” calligraphy and the straight-out-of-an-anime calligraphy teacher were another thing that were great, as well as the reveal that Minami’s upbringing was a bit of the ojou-sama trope that amusingly contrasted with Woni’s.

Also notable, Woni’s constant J-drama references.

There was also May and Liv reacting to their introductory video blowing up (original), mostly highlighted by them trying to work through their first endorsement, but the first 15 seconds of this video with May and Liv sorta summarize their characters in all this extremely well.

Look it can be tough being the unintentional comedic duo due to awkwardness, but it works.

They also had Minami teach Woni yankee/delinquent (original) lessons, not unlike gyaru, concluding by singing X JAPAN‘s “Endless Rain” in karaoke.

Sukeban Minami kinda reminded me of Yuki Takamiya from 13 Sentinels, lol.

Elsewhere, they were also guests on a bunch of programs, and quite frankly I don’t know where they found the time. Anyway, one of them was the channel of SNSD‘s HyoyeonHyo’s Level Up — where they did gyaru and Hyo … well, she made her own meme.

Korean version of “yaho~” viral … go.

Of course she would somehow give the meme new life.

Also, remember May’s running promise for “Love Attack” moving into the Top 100 (boy that seems so long ago, huh)? Well, she ended up fulfilling it with the help of Jinusean idol member turned running influencer Sean (original).

Literally suffering from success.

Anyway, they are basically a walking viral clip at this point.

Being an annoying hipster about Solfa is content.

Anyway, that’s about where it stands now from the variety side of things, and more than anything I think I just miss this kind of silliness. Like idols feel more accessible than ever, yet this definitely feels like some kind of second-gen variety thing with characters and all. Hits the right notes. Solfa, you genius … and lucky bastard for working with a group that can make it work.
