A Japanese TikTok influencer, and notably an ENHYPEN fan, took her own life on a live broadcast recently. Police received a report at around 5:33 AM saying that a Japanese woman in her 20s harmed herself in an officetel and authorities have confirmed her death (a friend also confirmed).
Unfortunately, the circumstances around the tragedy has led to wider debate on fandom culture, idol interactions, and cyberbullying.
Basically, the individual in question was a fan influencer, which leads to people within the fandom inevitably having mixed feelings no matter what one does. There was some controversy about her being attention-seeking at concerts and being parasocial to get the attention of members. It was stuff to that effect, which I only point out to say it was basically nothing that seems too crazy or dangerous in terms of K-pop fandom, but I guess enough incidents built up and at one point she faced a ton of backlash due to an interaction involving Ni-Ki and Sunoo.
According to Chinese media reports, the controversy began after an ENHYPEN concert in late July, when Mina allegedly hoped that member Kim Seon-woo (Sunoo) would pass a sunflower prop to NI-KI during the performance. Sunoo reportedly attempted to hand the sunflower to NI-KI, but the exchange ended after NI-KI did not take it.
In a livestream some stops later, Ni-Ki commented on attention made general comments about attention-seeking fans that did not address anybody specific, but the ENHYPEN fandom I guess took that as a green light to really tee off on the poor influencer.
“This is for those fans who go to concerts just to get some interaction.
Ni-ki: I want to focus on and take good care of all the fans, but sometimes, well, not just sometimes…
Ni-ki: Everywhere we go, there are a few people who constantly demand attention.
Ni-ki: But those people don’t jump around or really enjoy themselves.”
At one point later she had apologized for crossing boundaries, but the backlash didn’t stop, and then the livestream happened. Even as the events were taking place, there were people in the chat commenting vile things as she was dying. Even after the fact, people were insulting her and saying to focus on sending supportive messages to members instead. It’s hard to fathom how stanning celebrities can lead people this far down a dark path, really. And yet.
Unfortunately, it’s also led people to sorta perpetrate the wrongs done to the influencer, throwing blame around every which way and inflaming things further. Admittedly, I’m not up to date with every detail of this internal fandom issue, but I wanted to get general thoughts down because it’s mostly just disheartening to watch unfold. Not only the result of this specific issue, but the bigger picture of seeing the aftermath and knowing 100% things are likely to only get worse as a result and not better. Because yes, this incident had a tragic and public end, but similar behavior to this goes on literally everyday within fandoms without a second thought given to it with mostly unknown results, and that’s what makes it more depressing. I dunno, just a sad story to read about.
