Highlights: HANA, NOMELON NOLEMON, Hearts2Hearts, Snow Man, Effie, joOji, AtHeart

Holy hell, it’s been a while, huh? I’ll try not to make the next time take so long, but to be fair, most of the industry seemed to take February off, so it was rather slow for a good amount of time.

Anyway, these are what stood out to me, at least up to around two weeks ago or so.

As usual, I’ve embedded a Spotify playlist for this at the end to make it easier for readers.

HANA – “Cold Night”

Took me a while to get around to this, but of course it fits expectations that my favorite HANA song is the one where they pursue an anthemic rock sound. There were times where I thought I might eventually tire of the shouty/chanty chorus, but having the members (mostly) rotate assignments in sections of the chorus keeps things fresh, and there’s an almost country twang to it — both in production and vocals — that helps distinguish it a bit. Once it gets going, things flow effortlessly and the energy keeps chugging forward to a satisfying conclusion. “Cold Night” is also lyrically appropriate for the OST of the anime Medalist, becoming a fitting anthem for anybody needing to fake self-confidence to power through on the journey to achieving their goals.

NOMELON NOLEMON – “Midnight Reflection”

This is cheating a bit (a lot) since it came out early last year as a part of Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX‘s OST, but it was also included as a part of their EYE album (which is great as a whole, btw), and I only found this when listening through that. More importantly, it’s just a great listen with charming and almost playful verses, a non-stop drum-and-bass production that keeps the listener on their toes with some off-kilter angles, and has an addictive, memorable chorus that kept me entranced through multiple listens.

Hearts2Hearts – “RUDE!”

Not unlike another house track in “404 (New Era)”, this was another grower that won me over as it got increasingly addictive due to its strong refrain during the chorus. It almost felt like a cute concept version of KiiiKiii‘s song, and it feels almost impossible to not nod your head along to the beat while getting declarations of “rude” and “you can’t make me act right” etched into your brain. I’ve gone from enjoying it every time it’s come up to active seeking it out at times when I need a bit of a sound for sore ears, so to speak, from the sonic terrorism of their contemporaries.

I’ll also be honest and say the memes haven’t hurt the impression that this is a fun and light-hearted time.

——

Snow Man – “Odorouze!”

This is just a simple, fun, and funky dance track that does what it’s supposed to do thanks to a jubilant chorus that’s fully-fleshed out and sung with the kind of shameless energy this kind of track deserves. It feels a bit like millennial hopecore — and fuck it, I’m into at this point — as it encourages you to laugh, dance, and go forth through life. Don’t you worry, indeed.

——

Effie – “Red Horse”

Hell of a segue into “Red Horse“, which is very much not a straight-forward pop song. Ironically then, I’d argue it has more memorable hooks embedded within it than most modern K-pop songs. So while I’m not usually into the more esoteric tracks that utilize hyperpop/dubstep as their foundation, the scattershot soundscape is importantly centered around a memorable melody that makes it appeal even to my pop biases. Doesn’t seem like that represents progress to past fans of hers, and it probably won’t appeal to mainstream pop listeners either, but … well, it does appeal to me at least, the most important demographic.

——

joOji – “Yoake No Uta”

From the start to finish, you’re aurally taken to an auditorium where “Yoake No Uta” is being performed on stage as a part of a play or something. It has that kind of epic, dramatic, theatrical feel to it that doesn’t necessarily make it a track that you play on repeat, but does leave a hell of an impression. Perhaps appropriately then it’s part of the OST for Jujutsu Kaisen, and it’s effective in conveying the necessary emotional weight that comes with it. The production does a great job of selling the “bigness” of things, and his unique vocal stylings help make it a stand out.

——

AtHeart – “Butterfly Doors”

Another grower, as it made a good first impression and was on my playlists, but it really took time to realize it was embedded in my brain. The opening piano riff and the “butterfly doors open up for me” made a bigger impression than I thought — I think it interpolates “hush little baby”, which helps familiarity — but instead of settling on repeating that over and over, it simply uses it as a jumping off point. The rest of the track played with tempo a lot and became a bit more unique in the back-end that distinguished itself from similar fare. Perhaps most relevantly, the piercing chorus vocal provides a needed stand out within the song itself, and the “oooh I’m falling for you” became the best hook. It felt a bit like a plainer version of NMIXX‘s “Blue Valentine“, which quite frankly is a big compliment in 2026’s K-pop.
