FTC says 12 things on those terrible ‘Produce 101’ contracts need to be fixed

Produce101

Hey, remember those shitty contracts that the ‘Produce 101‘ contestants were signed to? Well, the Fair Trade Commission made a statement saying that CJ E&M needed to fix 12 unfair terms and conditions with their trainees.

The Fair Trade Commission stated on April 25, that CJ E&M needed to rectify 12 terms and unfair conditions in their contracts with the trainees.

A representative of the Fair Trade Commission commented that they have instructed for changes to be made to certain contract terms including the removal of the condition prohibiting trainees from objecting to unnatural and harmful editing as well as the acknowledgement of legal rights for trainees’ original work, in the case of any newly created song arrangements or choreography.

Oh.

The only thing surprising about this is that anything was said, but I suppose that only happened because the contracts went public.

Anyway, this is why I don’t understand the people who defend companies in most of these scenarios. Yes, contracts are contracts and need to be upheld for the sake of business, but that’s assuming the contracts aren’t signed under duress or are even valid in the way they are constructed. Time and again we’ve seen courts rule the contracts to be written like shit and not worth what they’re printed on (and using anecdotal evidence, it’s not hard to see why), which is the whole point of people like me not giving a shit about whether whoever violates them. And those rulings are even after factoring that the companies are the ones with the money and power to fight or influence or cover wrongdoings up (like Stardom Entertainment did with Block B), so these things have to be an absolute mess to get ruled against.
