A thorough breakdown of former SNH48 member Tang Anqi’s horrific ordeal, plus her debut as a VTuber

About a decade ago, I covered a horrific story out of the Chinese entertainment industry where SNH48 member Tang Anqi was severely burned over 80% of her body. The official story was she accidentally set herself on fire in a restaurant with a lighter, though as you can probably imagine, not many people were buying that version of events.

As far as comprehensive recaps of the event and the aftermath, I had surprisingly not really seen them done in English, but Dark Asia With Megan gave it a shot earlier this year. I wasn’t familiar with the YouTube channel, and while I’m usually a general skeptic when it comes to content creators, I found her video to be quite accurate. Due to the amount of mystery around this still persisting, there was a lot of fat to cut through because everybody and their mother has a theory, but she covered all of the bases I had seen myself after looking into it for a bit. Well worth a watch.

It’s unfortunate, but since there’s been no justice or really any official explanation that makes sense, the video ends with a bit of a depressing mood.

Fortunately, I was informed by a reader of a much brighter piece of info to end the saga on. Last year, Tang Anqi started a career as VTuber Zeyin Melody under VirtuaReal, which seems to be an ideal situation for her. Normally I would hesitate to post about a VTuber’s “past life”, so to speak, but nothing about her identity has really been hidden from the jump, so it feels fine to bring attention to in this case.

During her debut stream, it was expectedly emotional, and her choice of cover in David Tao‘s “Butterfly” was really on point given the lyrics.

Unsurprisingly, she does do a lot of idol stuff during her streams, including covers of K-pop and SNH48 songs.

She only streams on BiliBili, so while it might be hard, support if you can.
