QWER debut in Japan with a heavier sound and darker aesthetic on “SHOW DOWN”

QWER recently made their Japanese debut with “SHOW DOWN“, which also serves as the opening theme for the upcoming anime Tomb Raider King (based on a manhwa of the same name) that’s set to start streaming on July 8th. QWER are no strangers to collabs — as they’ve notably done one with League Of Legends and a few gacha games for variety content — but with this Japanese debut Siyeon has completed a double debut as a Japanese idol.

“SHOW DOWN” is the first of their music videos with a more darker aesthetic, and from the styling to the production there’s a stark contrast with QWER’s normal presentation. Specifically, that guitar tone is insane and I absolutely couldn’t get enough of it, and the same goes for Magenta and Hina‘s short bridge leading into Chodan‘s charismatic rap. Siyeon vocals fit the track perfectly from start to finish, with some high notes thrown in throughout. It’s definitely a more rock-toned QWER track then we have gotten in the past, with slight adjustments to each instrument. Chodan’s drums feel that extra weight throughout, and the guitars are a bit more punchy than we’re used to. The arrangement blends some great chord patterns and rhythm sections while still not being overly complex — this isn’t NEMOPHILA, it’s something fans can pick up and learn to strum along to if they wanted to.

While QWER are generally softer than most of the Japanese groups I tend to cover on here, “SHOW DOWN” really helps to successfully frame the idea of them taking on a more hard rock theme and look. The four members put in the work to shine on their own with their simple but pleasant arrangements and great vocals that help make this music video land successfully, which hopefully captures a whole new audience for one of my favorite groups in recent years.

Overall, I’m very excited to see QWER break into the Japanese music scene and honestly hope to see a full Japanese album from them in the future. It would be really fun to see how their music would contrast between the Korean and Japanese markets with their production, as “SHOW DOWN” is a great contrast from stuff like “Ceremony“, and seeing this darker aesthetic for the band is a very fresh take on their look and sound.

Whether on stage or off the stage, QWER continue to deliver some of the best songs and content from the K-pop space and I’m glad to see them diverting to a different sound for a new market. Now if MUSINSA TV would get their shit together and sub the episodes of their variety show so I can watch Chodan rock Siyeon in the ring.
